I'm so excited for your next video. I want to start incorporating your sentence mining/anki routine to my studies. After I saw your video with Rita, I was like "I want to try his study routine". I've been learning Mandarin for the past 6 months from a textbook, and I would like to start studying more listening comprehension and speaking exercises. I feel like I'm learning all these words, characters, and small phrases but I still can't express myself the way that I want. Excellent advice. I learned Mandarin in Taiwan - reasonably fluent spoken but can't read. Since then, I have moved to Thailand and solo studied Thai while in Shanghai- I can read and write low-intermediate Thai. It is still very difficult to just go out and practice a language- apart from simple questions in the 7/11 or while getting coffee. I was lucky in Taiwan to have many Taiwanese friends that I spent most days with ( this really helped). In Thailand - you would probably have to join a group of sorts to be injected into a language-friendly atmosphere.

In Thailand you have an alphabet that you can learn in a day. That really helps a lot. And some people argue that mandarin gets easier when you also learn the characters, I agree, reading is an important part.

I believe from a specific level you automatically think in Mandarin. For the 2nd part - get as much exposure (from multible sources) as you can get. With 2 hours a week you will never get there.

Yes, I agree with your tip here. As it is the same thing I did and still do when I was learning English. But I am limited by my current knowledge. I could try to force it and make lots of mistakes. As a self-study, what I am afraid is that those mistakes will stick with me and become too hard to change.

Im at my first year of college taking fine arts yet im inspired to learn a language. Ive had my progress from a year now, sadly it came to an end. As of this jan 2024, ive started to learn again from scratch, hence, this is my earliest stage of learning chinese. I usually use duolingo and gradually repeating slow sentences in youtube and podcasts. I could already see my progress when ive heard how i pronounce words. As for this day, i wantvto learn techniques from others who learn it as well, and one of your videos with Grace, really amaze me so i went on your channel to watch this video and it never fails to inspired me to really outlearn the simple ways ive take. This was a really great video on tackling that specific areas when learning chinese. Ps. I want to keep learning it as simple as possible as to not compete it with the things im currentky busy into such as my college studies. Do you think daily learning for about 20-40 mins or so dedicated to increasing my proficiency would help much in the long run?

Hello. I've self-studied mandarin using HelloChinese and some of the methods you mentioned, for example I learnt to think in chinese, to talk to do self pracical conversations. I also had many chinese friends (that I never met) who helped me a lot. I listened to a lotta podcasts in what was interesting for me and made huge progress. Keep going!

An excellent and constructive video. I’ve been self learning for 6 years as I have a Chinese wife. Initially with whatever I could find on KZbin. It’s been a struggle but more recently I’ve had more success with Pimsluer over the last few months. I’m an avid watcher of Chinese TV dramas with sub titles not just for the language but for an insight to the culture. I find now I can understand much more than I can speak and this goes the same for my wife’s learning of English. The bottom line is we are both reluctant to talk for fear embarrassment. It’s not rocket science I guess. Just got to do it. Thanks again. You have a new subscriber.

Hi there ! I would like to say thankyou for these videos, this genuinely is so much better than the many of the popular chinese learning videos on youtube right now. I have been learning chinese for 7-8 months now and I been using glossika (very similar to anki), spending 1 hour + everyday listening to sentences. I have had less time for saying my sentences out loud and less time for talking with Chinese speaking friends, but I am very much trying to recreate your learning methods. I am looking forward to the next video because I am wondering how you do your anki sets, and whether you also type in the sentence as well ( as I find this very inconvenient ).

Also, Pimselur method teaches you how to speak and respond in Mandarin by teaching you useful phrases in segments and then running them together for a complete thought. I found this very helpful as I learn Mandarin. Not only does it teach you a standard pronunciation, but your response becomes almost like a reflex. You don't have to thing about it. I listen every day on my way to work (1hour) and home again (1hour), so I get a total of 2 hours a day, plus i have Chinese class 2x per week for 1 hour. I only advance on to the next lesson when I thoroughly know the content of the current unit.

No question, Pimselur is good as ONE imput. Problem is that Pimselur isn't very deep. It's important to have several inputs.

I would say firstly, try and expand your active vocabulary as that is basis of speaking. Then from there it's a case of lots of practice with native speakers and getting lots of feedback from them

The aspect I find most difficult is that when you speak to yourself in Chinese, you may not necessarily be speaking correctly. Like your 搭配 could be completely off and then you cement all of these bad habits.

I think you need to speak to yourself by changing some example sentences that you already know are correct

Hey Will, can I ask you a favor? Since you already do a great effort to make Chinese subtitles embedded on the screen, could you please do them as CC subtitles on KZbin instead? (or maybe both, since you already type them anyway). That way we can export the CC file and study it in more detail using readers and software like LingQ.

@@willhartmandarin Another advantage of making soft CC, is that Chrome extensions could automatically add pinyin(or zhuyin) on the top/below the hanzi. Currently, though your videos have hanzis, it cannot help learners on reading them. If there is a pinyin or zhuyin on top of your hanzis, learners can read along with your videos. Chinese words separator Chrome extension can automatically add pinyin(or zhuyin) on top/below your video's hanzi if your hanzi subtitles are soft CC

Will, 我觉得你说反了，应该是先有大量的输入，多听多听多听，有了语感后才可能正确地输出（说/写）。不然一来就多说，很可能就是固化一些非母语的错误，以后改起来更麻烦。你可不可以回忆一下你的学习过程，在你开始说中文之前是否已经大量地听了很多中文。

Tony 谢谢你的评论。其实我从学中文的第一天到现在我每天都说中文。我觉得你要是不是光背单词 而是在例句语境中学词汇的话 你就可以保证你不会犯很多错误。而且，你如果犯错误的话 只要没有变成肌肉记忆 改回来很有可能没有你想象的那么麻烦。反正这些都是我自己的观点，语言学习就是见仁见智。

@@willhartmandarin 那可能跟你身边一直有华人朋友跟你说有关系。我知道我身边很多同学朋友学英语，很早就说，但是不是跟英语母语者说，最后造成了很多不可扭转的错误，包括语法和发音两个方面的，所以一直到现在说出来都是严重的chinglish，不像你中文真的很地道👍

我觉得这其实与“正反“没有关系。输出可以明显的通过实践感受到自己对语言的需求，需要弥补的地方，再进行有目的的输入。对于不知道何从输入的人来说，先输出是一个很好的做法。

我有个提醒和建议希望你能看到。很多中文学习者喜欢刻意模仿北京口音，也有些人因为北京口音被人称赞发音地道。但其实这是一个陷阱，并不适合所有人。北京口音不是标准的普通话。这个视频是你早期的视频，口音是标准口音。你最近的视频口音正在向北京口音转变。口音方面我更欣赏这个视频的口音。北京口音的适用面仅限于北京，而且不能覆盖所有北京人。完全忽略儿化（包括标准普通话中的儿化）适合绝大多数人。更容易学习，同时给人更有文化的印象。kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3vRpn9onc2LeK8

Probably. But even so, I mean I'd have to read from a script myself regardless of the language I speak if I wanted to make a coherent and concise video. In any case, even in reading you can tell he's gotten down a lot of the rhythm a native speaker has and uses the right filler words / particles to make it sound natural. He really wasn't kidding when he was saying he studied 語感 (language sense). Extremely impressive.
