I want to thank you. I am 57 years old and have always wanted to play the piano. I was a trumpet player in high school and still dabble in it. I finally bought a Casio Privia PX-S1100RD which I saw a young lady from Russia named Gamazda use. She started my on this journey. I was pretty much using other KZbin videos in an attempt to learn how to play. I was going to take lessons but just lost my job of 17 years. I found your video 7 days to learning piano. I'm on day six now and I was in tears. I can see the progress and can see the beautiful music I can play. I found this video and your story about the women learning how to play real music made her cry. Yeah that was me as well today. Thank you so much for putting these videos out there. Your message his home. I can do this no matter my age. Thanks again.

Talk about a book older than the student...my mother used to teach using the John Thomas books (circa 1936). She started to teach me when I was seven but my parents divorced and that was the end of the lessons. Just over 20 years ago I came across a Casio at Costco I couldn't refuse, thinking I was going to learn to play it. Since then I've occasionally plinked on it but still can't play ANYTHING. I am currently 68 and have decided to make a real effort before I run out of time. I paused this video and ordered a sustain peddle. I think I'm committed. Thanks for the encouragement. I'll see if this old dog can learn a new trick.

I'm 57 and started learning to play the piano last year. Online learning has been super helpful in my journey and I absolutely love Lisa's videos. If I could make one more suggestion - start a journal that includes your daily practice plans, challenges, victories, etc. You will go through peaks and valleys of frustration and motivation. Learning the piano (especially if you are learning to read music) is very difficult. It will take years to master this instrument. Having a journal will be a concrete reminder of your progress and it helps to keep one disciplined with practice. Remember - learning is an infinite game. It's incredibly fun and rewarding to hear music created by your own hands.

Biggest hurdle (as someone who started to play when I was 23) is to motivate yourself to learn the coordination and muscle memory required. And only thing to ensure you'll get that is to PLAY EVERY SINGLE DAY! And to do that, you want to make it as easy and effortless as possible to play. You want to have a digital keyboard that has it's own speakers and sounds, that's powered 24/7 so that every time you hit a key, even if you're just walking past it randomly, it'll make a sound... or to have a "silent piano" (if you can afford a real one) that even if at 11PM you get the urge to play, you don't need to worry about bothering others. etc. You'll lose your will to play if you need to start setting something up, powering up the keyboard, starting up an app on your computer etc... you want all those hurdles out of your way of just playing. Situate the piano in such a place that you're arms distance to it most of the time or that you pass it by multiple times a day while doing stuff around the house... and you'll be just thinking "I'll play a bit before I continue what I was doing..." and it'll create those chances of just randomly getting lost into it and that 2 minutes turns into 2 hours... and you'll love it! And learn to enjoy just the fact that you press buttons and they make interesting sounds. Don't worry about being really great or "learning all these songs"... just enjoy every moment you sit there making some sounds and you'll be spending a lot of time in front of it without you even noticing. And when you spend a lot of time on something, you'll become good at it... you can't avoid it. Never get frustrated, or you won't play. It needs to be fun every time, so don't put goals and achievements of demands on your progress... that way you'll never get frustrated and you'll always be learning and enjoying. And remember to sleep a lot... if you can't do something today, sleep on it before getting frustrated and try again next day... and day after that. And you'll learn, without ever even noticing. This has worked for me wonderfully and I'm somewhat accomplished composer/arranger as of today regardless the fact that I've never taken lessons. I just want to enjoy my time in front of the keyboard... and if I do that, everything else will fall into it's place :) Good luck everyone!

Now I can play my favorite pieces and it definitely worth the grind and the hours or practice put into it. I am 61. I played trumpet in middle and high school and, except for playing Chopsticks on the piano in the band room, that was the sum total of my keyboard experience. I stopped making music after graduating. Last month I bought a keyboard because, dang it, I just wanted to make music again; preferably using an instrument better suited to solo performance than my old trumpet. I've been using a variety of resources--books, KZbin videos, and the like--and have been having a blast! I wish I had kept making music throughout my life instead of taking a 43-year hiatus, but that's water under the bridge. Now I'm focused on revisiting one of the joys of my early days, and embracing a more musical future. Thanks for making these videos available--they're a godsend!

When I started reading these comments, I had no idea there'd be so many from people my age. Wow. Music, of course, is ageless, but it's cool to know there are others out there like me. I had to choose between music & horses. Horses won, but that was then. Gave my life to horses for decades; time to move on. Learning to read music at this age has been the adventure of a lifetime. And as you say, these videos are a Godsend. Good luck to everyone. PS: It would be so cool if all Pianote students had a message board or Facebook group or something to share stories, goals, frustrations, etc., wouldn't it? Let's see, we could form a facebook group, figure out a way to do Skype piano band rehearsals, end up writing a song, & somebody would write a book about us & we'd perform virtually for St. Jude's Hospital or troops overseas or Farm Aid, & they'd make our story into a move. That would be cool. I want Annette Benning to play me.

Having worked with people suffering from Alzheimer's, when my husband retired he feared he might go the same way. I had heard that there were two good ways to prevent this - either learn a foreign language or learn a musical instrument. Since we have too many dogs to go abroad, I bought him ten piano lessons as a taster the Christmas before he retired. He loved it, and still does three years later. The teacher asked me if I would like to try, so I did... and I fell in love with the piano immediately. We're not bothered about getting our grades but it's nice to have a few party pieces. So there you have it; I took up the piano at 56, my husband took it up at 64 and we both remain in control of our faculties. And two pianos. And a digital piano. And loads of manuscripts. We're having lots of fun!

I'm 65, never had any piano lessons & am teaching myself to play w/the help of these videos. We can do it! I've taught myself to read music up to what I think is an upper beginner level(?). I told myself when I started 4 years ago that if I could play 'Fur Elise' off the beginner sheet music I'd found that I'd die happy. Well... that happened 3 years ago, & my goals keep moving further ahead as I keep learning.

YESSS! It's like you made this for me! I stumbled on one of your videos (4 easy songs for beginners) earlier this month to help my 8-year-old daughter enjoy piano more. It was not for her, but it was for MEEEEE! OMG, the JOY of being 38 and just one day making musical sounds come from the keyboard, that are not "Hot Cross Buns"! Just love your teaching style, and I already joined in one of your courses. Today on Day 2, I was playing the BEATLES! Why, yes, I do have happy tears as I type this. Thanks for what you're sharing. Keep it coming! xxo

I'm 45. Recently started playing piano and already making a decent progress as far as I can tell. The best thing about being an adult is patience, which I have plenty :) Your videos help a LOT and you're a real inspiration. So thank you! ❤

I am 71, and close to my birthday last September, I decided I would put my flutes in their cases for a while and focus on the piano - how to understand and learn improvising and jazz on the piano. Your KZbin video that reviewed which piano to buy helped me decide on a digital piano. I am fascinated! Yes, my brain is moving faster than my fingers, so thank you for the patience reminder!

Since joining Pianote I have the confidence to play sing I love. I'm working on Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac, Cardigan, Taylor Swift, Right Here Waiting for You by Richard Marks. A wonderful blend of ease and challenge. Sight reading. Inverted chords. Moments of blind panic, struggle and rewarding self discovery. I use my keyboard (unweighted) to soothe my nerves and find my centre. Thankyou Lisa! You are a Joy in my life!

Hello Lisa! I have discovered that there has been a piano man living in me for 67 years! Now I find it helpful if I take responsibility to teach him what’s going on and that he understands and then I make him practice! And make him prove to me that he’s learning by extra practice! When he says “I’ve had enough!”, I know I’ve done my job!

Lisa I love you. I am a 53 year old grandmother and always wanted to learn how to play. My granddaughters got a new keyboard for Christmas and the 6 year old is not interested so I will use it. I watched a few of your videos and already made some advances already. Doing the scales practice is harder than it looks with both hands together. Thank you for making these videos. I will keep practicing. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I had a few lessons before 10 that didn't get anywhere. I restarted in the mid-30s. Starting was the easy part. Getting through technical challenges including sight-reading took a few years. My main problem is family responsibilities with elderly parents that live out of town. Of course we want to spend at least an hour a day practicing but had other things to take care of. When I'm on the keyboard, I feel that I have to push myself to finish the pieces I started learning. There would be a few months in between I would be away from home with no access to a piano.

totally get it! I had a keyboard at my parents place that I would always play for them when I was over there.

I fit the "never took lessons" scenario; studied a couple of your videos while the recommended keyboard/accessories was in the mail. Got it yesterday and choked up a bit when it came out of the box. I think that many people now being WFH means less trouble finding time to practice. Whatever the case, I find your can-do attitude helpful, and the practice routines practical and rewarding. My wife and 4 young kids are amped, too! (Wife has them all on violin). But something tells me I won't be the only one for long, on piano...

I come from a musical family, my Dad was semi-pro guitarist used to back the big stars.. I was allowed to go to 1. concert when he played w/Hank Williams jr. .. I just bought a beginner’s keyboard & just took my first lesson from You!! Wow !! Thankyou Ma’am !! I’m going to enjoy THIS!! I’m a drummer & a biker …. & going to play Keyboard!! I’m 72 w/3. I did about six years of lessons when young but never really got to grips with it... I know that I did not practice enough so didn't progress much at all. I just wanted to play. That was 60 years ago.... I did teach myself to play acoustic guitar and sing (folky) and I am now going to try and learn to play piano to accompany myself. I know now that I'm in charge of what I want to learn!! I look forward to your lessons

Started when the lockdown started. I'm 21, I learned the chords on piano first by just watching people play piano, it's usually always that same shape. Saw the chords once a couple years ago and somehow I just knew the chords on the piano. I can play the chords and sing over it, I'm working on playing both hands at once. This channel helps a lot!

Being in the room as my mom taught piano lessons is one of my first memories. I was maybe one and a half years old. She never pushed me to play (though singing in the childrens' choir at church was mandatory : ), so when I was ready as a teenager, I loved every minute of it. I was self-directed at that point b/c I'd been playing drums and reading music notation for a few years, so I felt confident that I could figure some things out on my own. I only learned the very basics, but it's one of my best memories of playing music--sitting in our church late in the evening and just playing scales, exercises and beginner songs from a method book. Love your communication style and the way you structure your lessons! Going to recommend your channel to a friend. Thank you!

I took piano lessons during Elementary school. The songs at that time were European classic/"Beethovenish". I absoluuuutely couldn't grasp what those songs are about and I gave up. 30 years later, I have favorite singers & happened to find piano covers of their songs. Now I KNOW what I want to play and want to start again.
