Lisa, Thanks for this lesson. These routines are all achievable with practice. Although the staccato arpeggios & octaves are challenging! I am a 73 year old beginner who purchased his Casio CDP-S100 in July. I decided to learn piano as a retirement project and also whilst in Covid lockdown. I really appreciate your gentle approach of breaking each technical exercise down into discrete parts. For repertoire I am learning to pick out the melodies of simple, slow tempo ballads such as Can't Help Falling in Love with You and worship songs such as Abide with Me and Just a Closer Walk with Thee. Please keep up your good work. Best Wishes from Mornington, Victoria, Australia.

Every time I even start practice i don’t know if I told you Lisa but I actually meditate and get into mindfulness meditations before getting to the piano. It really makes me feel connected and ready. Meditation is so important before starting tat way I can clear my ead.

I do the same!

Isn’t that the truth though because many people wonder what meditation has to do with music or making music. Well, just as you have to prepare physically you have to prepare mentally as well.

Hello Lisa. Been a while since last tuning in. Have something to tell you I'm telling all you guys that have been encouraging to me - I've been catching some of you guys that show these techniques on pianos, not many on organs. I'm a former organ player - I say that because of family issues and now I only have a keyboard. I was never a good organist or played very well except by ear and I've learned more about how to play these instruments than all the teachers I've ever had and I must say, thank you so much for opening my ears and eyes. I hope to rekindle my love of playing watching you all and then taking on practice as I used to to just to learn how to play a song or two. I feel I learned all wrong earlier in life, I'm right at retirement age and have not played with any kind of passion in many years. I hope to do it again.....thank you, thank you, thank you!

I believe these warmup exercises are excellent. To take it to the next level, I would recommend these to be written out into piano scores so that beginner piano students can sight read the exercises as they are practicing them. To reach the next level of warmups, I highly recommend all beginning and intermediate piano students purchase, “The virtuoso Pianist” Parts 1 and 2 by Hanon, generally referred to as the Hanon finger exercises. Here you will be practicing repeating finger patterns as Lisa is demonstrating in this video. The Hanon exercises start out in simple patterns and gradually introduce more complex patterns to the student. Not only will Hanon build all the skills Lisa has demonstrated, but will dramatically increase your sight reading skill as well. Cheers to all piano students. I hope this bit of advice will further your piano playing enjoyment.

I have never heard of Hanon, would it work for self learners?

Dear Lisa, I play piano since lot of years but I often have problems of posture. One of the main issue, especially when I start (I also do excercises of breathing and mental relax before studying) is: If you do all exercises on the white keys, once you play the whole keyboard so also the black keys what happens to your body, to your posture I mean ? Do you have to move a bit forward with the bench, as there are little but significant distance between black and white keys ? How does it work ? Thank you in advance. Andrea

Dear Ms. Lisa. What a brilliant method you use in every video. I Highly appreciate your effort. Just had a question in mind. Well.. Been singing and playing the guitar for years. I know the chords' progression and kind of the ins and outs of both. The question is..is it possible for me to play the piano/keyboard bearing in mind that I'm 29 years old? (coz they some say that this instrument must be played starting from childhood). Thx in advance :)

Just started following some of these. Not really a proper Piano player, but kind of dabble. One thing that always frustrates me is having small-ish hands I cant spread my fingers far enough to reach all the notes that are played. Like learning some Elton songs, I think man I just cant reach that key with my pinky, which is really frustrating as you can never then get the same sound. Does having smaller hands become a handicap to ever playing properly? Just throwing this question out there. Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just bad technique on my part?
