Thanks. At 71 I'm learning Spanish and Hindi. My Spanish is much better than the Hindi because I lived in Spain (ceuta) for two years 84-86 but lost much and now I'm relearning. I do not find Hindi as hard as I thought I would and I'm told that I speak it well. What do you know of Hindi? Any advice ? Tom Speaks Bullcrap. Hungarian is a very agglutinative language. This means that instead of having a bunch of little bits of information in a certain word order (though cases can erase strict word order), it's just a bunch of affixes. Think of a word like antidisestablishmentarianism. All in all, you can do whatever you set your mind to!

Luca thanks for the post! Your blog really helps me focus, especially when I am feeling frustrated. I'm also learning Japanese for family reasons and it is my first foreign language....so obviously I can feel frustrated! One way I have found to relate to it is my experience learning jazz piano. I practiced scales/chords and learned music theory (the grammar), went to jam sessions (speaking), and transcribed from the recording (listening). I went through a long "intermediate" stage of years where it felt like depending on the day I couldn't even play easier standards, but then one day it seemed to all come together. I'm thinking (or hoping) that learning a foreign language will be a similar road to learning the "jazz language."

Nice video. I'm always interested in your perspective on language learning. I've been studying Japanese for over 7 years so I thought I'd comment too. I started at age 34 and I guess it wasn't too late after all for me although I often felt otherwise. When it comes to difficult languages, or any language, I think you need to look at your goals and understand the amount of time you will need to put in to achieve those goals. For example, if getting conversational in Japanese takes an hour every day for 4-5 years, are you going to be able to stay motivated for that long to achieve that goal? You may not know the answer to that until you actually give it a try. For some strange reason I maintained my motivation year after year even though I wasn't conversational and it seemed like I wouldn't ever reach that goal. I'm sure it's different for other people. Especially if you're both younger and really motivated to learn a language. You will probably learn it faster than I did. But if you are thinking that maybe you don't want to wait five years to be conversational, maybe you should pick a different language. Because Spanish or German WILL go much faster. But at the same time, maybe you're not very interested in or motivated to learn those languages.
@Tehui19745 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience. I just want to check my understanding: did you spend 7 years learning Japanese to get to a conversation level, based on an average of 1 hour of dedicated study per day? If so, I''m curious about two things (1) what was your motivation, and (2) what was your methodology?

Às vezes é também a forma como os nativos imaginam a própria língua. Quando comecei a estudar russo percebi que os professores que tive e os russos que conheci tratavam a própria língua como algo complexo e imaginavam que era algo impossível de aprender. Eu sempre amei a língua e aprendi com muita rapidez. É por isso talvez que minha experiência em cursos em grupo foi um pouco frustrante. Os materiais eram entediantes e as pessoas no grupo não se dedicavam como eu, não se exercitavam com frequência.

You're so right about finding valid and solid reasons to choose one language and to keep motivation in it, even if it is very complex. By examples, during several years, I had a brake in my mind about Russian. I love classical Russian culture (XIXth century music, litterature, painting, ...etc), the folk songs,... but with the image of Russia with Stalin and now Putin, there were some scruples to begin Russian, plus the complexity of Slavonic languages. No it's ok as I have discussed long hours with Russian people, with no taboos. Whatever the political regime, Russian language and Russian people worthes it!

I honestly think it depends how you learn it e.g. who teaches you. I’m not gonna advertise here which book I got but, That made all the difference. A third language is easier: You know how to learn better; you are more familiar with how languages work; you have the knowledge that you already know the language--this supports your further efforts, you've done it. "Hard languages" should COME AFTER "close languages," in my opinion. I've heard from several that languages get easier the more one learns, and the first is MUCH HARDER, regardless of other considerations. Good tips! One definitely needs a GOOD REASON to oneself to learn.
@eundongpark16723 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's that simple. I'm a native English speaker then I learned Spanish. I thought it was hard but I was interested so I kept going until I'm pretty flent and reasonably comfortable in conversation. Then I started learning my third language, Korean, and now I realise how - for a native English speaker - Spanish was really easy! I'm not saying it's no work, but so much simpler to "own" the language. Having a vastly different sentence structure and no real common roots in the language makes it so difficult! At least Korean has reasonably consistent spelling and a super-easy writing system. I feel sorry for Koreans and Japanese who have to bridge the gap to English, with its extremely inconsistent spelling and massive range of accents that are very different from each other

Luca, how do you get excited for a language's culture when you've developed a distaste for it? I'm stuck at an intermediary level of French I'd like the improve it and get better at speaking mainly. I recently moved to Montreal and I know I need French to have the best job prospects here and also because I would like to get out of the anglophone bubble I'm currently stuck in. However, for a number of reasons I've developed a distaste for French and French culture. I know this is subjective, so how do I get excited about the language again now that I'm living in Quebec?
@not_ever9 жыл бұрын
+Ingrossa You are making the mistake of assuming there is only one type of French culture. French is a language spoken by millions of people. There are 29 different countries where French is an official language. There is not one single, francophone monoculture except in your head. I don't know why you have such a distaste, it might be because of a bad experience with some French speakers (every language has it's fair share of arseholes) or bad language education at school (this should put you off French teaching in school not the French language) but you have to get over whatever problem it is by changing your perspective. What is it that you have developed a distaste for specifically? What are your interests in your own native language? There will be French speakers who share these interests, people are not completely different to you because they speak another language. If you want to get better at speaking then you have to go out and speak but if you are too shy or whatever try lessons on italki or sth.

I am an Italian north Indian languages expert and people always tell me 'these languages must be too hard'. The fact is that as Indo-European languages they are very much related to our European languages. For Italians their pronunciation is quite easy and for example Hindi and Punjabi have an extremely simple grammar (almost no irregularities for example and only one conjugation). The hard part is learning new writing systems and the syntax which is closer to languages like Japanese. When I tell this they laugh and tell me 'you say so because you must be a genius!'

I do not believe this particular statement because like you said in your video earlier. Everyone learns differently! Well it might be easy for me! Might be difficult for someone else! I wonder whether you can overcome circassian or abkhaz language?))))

Some languages are easier than others. Let's take Esperanto, there are no irregular verbs, the spelling is phonetic, etc. That makes it easier for everyone. Then again learning Esperanto is not that easy, you have to learn to express anything and that takes time.

I find that some native speakers of supposedly "hard" languages (Dutch, Polish) assume that their languages are difficult to learn and even try to dissuade foreigners from trying to learn

Timothy Douglas but Dutch is like the very easiest language to learn?

Luca I realize this might seem random, and I do not know if it is a problem for you since you have a native romance language base, but as a native English speaker I find the gender agreement a source of constant difficulty. I frequently make mistakes regarding it, even though I know the rules. How do you deal with this in your students?
@RonaldMcPaul4 жыл бұрын
When you learn the the word memorize it WITH the article that goes with it, and a go to adjective. Don't force yourself to always be thinking of rules, just recall it as standard memory. For your most common words at least. La bella hermosa, metelo en la mano grande. On less common words you can pause or get wrong, natives will forgive you.

hi, do you believe that is possible to learn korean without to live in the country?
@BrianWellness8 жыл бұрын
with skype technology the answer is definitely, yes, you can learn without going to Korea. these language lovers are learning all types of languages without even leaving there hometown. as long as you can speak with natives consistently, it can be done and things like Skype, make it possible for free.
