I'm learning Chinese and Japanese at the moment. I began learn Chinese about a year before Japanese which means I already knew a lot of Chinese characters. This, I found, makes it so much easier to learn Japanese because I already know quite a few of the kanji characters, which a lot of people struggle with when learning Japanese. So your tip about learning two languages definitely applies to my situation.

Great! I hope this will help you with your studies going forward :) Are you using any particular resources for Japanese? I'm learning Japanese too so I'd be interested to know!
@lyndaa79377 жыл бұрын
I started in school using the "Genki" textbook. That was good for foundational knowledge and getting started. Now that I'm not in school I don't use it anymore. Now I've been using lang-8, memrise, guidetojapanese.org and Rikaichan. Lang-8 is good for having people check the things I write. I get my grammar corrected and learn words that may be better suited for what I was trying to say. I'm using memrise for vocabulary. I use guideto japanese.org for grammar. And Rikaichan is a great extension to be able to read Kanji when you don't have it. Like on Lang-8 I correct entries for people learning English and they have what they mean in Japanese underneath. But I don't know all that kanji so I'm able to use Rikaichan to read what they wrote even though I don't know all that Kanji but I understand the grammar. So as I use it while browsing the web or watching Japanese music video I kinda slowing get familiar with some Kanji and words. But yea these are my resources nothing too rigorous at the moment.

hi, great tips. My native language is English, my second, Spanish. I have been teaching myself Italian(c2 years) and Greek (c1 year). One thing that spanish, Italian and Greek have in common is that the pronunciation never changes unlike in English. As you know, English can be quite difficult. You think an /f/ is pronounced one way when bingo one comes across a /ph/ gh/ ough/ all pronounced like /f/ . Russian ( studied c1 year many years ago) is like sp,it,gr in that way, how you see it you read it, never changes! 😁 Once you learn the sounds and how to write the letters in Greek and Russian, that is half the battle. Presently, I would say I am an advanced intermediate with Italian and beginner with the Greek. I dedicate about 2-3 hours per day sometimes more to Italian doing DuoLingo, reading, writing, listening to music, watching Italian tv, etc. I do this in the morning in a room I call the " Italian" room ,😁. My Greek, I do in the evening, in my "Greek" room for c 1 hour listening to some very good audio Greek radio lessons that were online with transcripts, so I get to practice listening, reading and writing. Every few days my Greek American friend calls me so I can review with her and practice speaking. This routine has worked out quite well for me. And being retired, I have the time to do all this 😁One has to have the motivation and the discipline if one wants to embark on this most exciting journey, right??
@english_with_aga8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment Maria! You seem very determined and I'm sure you'll do well! :) And yes - I know what you mean about the changing pronunciation! I'm learning Japanese right now and the pronunciation can be very different depending on how a particular character is used. :P

5-Minute Language wow Japanese. I heard that there are also different ways of saying the same thing to a man or a woman, right? Sayonara!! I like that Japanese is polysyllabic, correct?. easier to pronounce, I would imagine.
@english_with_aga7 жыл бұрын
I've certainly found it quite easy to pronounce, compared with other languages I've learned. In terms of addressing different people - I'm not an expert on this yet but my understanding is that yes - there are different levels of formality/tone that you use with different people. If anyone can shed any light on this here - let me know!

Yeah, modern English is really two languages in one, spoken English and written English are rather distinct languages now. Written English is kind of medieval English frozen in time while spoken English evolved quite a lot since then. On a side note, the rune "ᚦ" was trancribed differently into English, sometimes as "th" and sometimes as "y" (it was pronounced in both cases as th originaly), so in older English you can see "Ye" instead of "the" or "thou" which evolved into "you"

@Αφροδιτη-ψ9ο5 жыл бұрын
It definitely helps but it depends a lot on the education system of the Country. For example in my country at school we take 2 languages,it's not an option you gonna have the classes neither you want it or not witch is actually good. In the first language you don't have an option : English and in the second you can choose between France and German . Also we start from a very young age , 3d grade of primary English ,3 hours per week ,but the class hour is 45minutes,5th grade France or German, 2 hours per week. The problem is that the system in learning sucks, a lot. You definitely gonna learn a lot more in a year at home by your self ,by songs or movies etc. than what you gonna learn in one year at school.

My motivation and inspiration, was mainly to watch Cdramas without English subtitles because after watching 59-60 episodes per drama, out of 9 dramas I got tired of reading English And just wanted to enjoy the show in it's entirety. I am 12 but most people say I’m mature for my age and I really want to learn German but in January 2019 a teacher is coming in teaching us French plus I’m going to secondary school (for Americans this is the 7th grade - senior year) and we will be doing French as a core subject. I want to learn German but I think it would be confusing and I might get really confused and forget which word is which language etc.

So good tips. By the way, my native language is Korean, and I am super beginner at Chinese. In this case, would it be effective to learn Chinese by watching youtube videos in 'English'? I think my English is at advanced level..:)

I'm learning 2 very different languages and living semi-permanently in one of the countries. Therefore literally every time I leave the house, I am forced to switch my brain into that language. On the other hand, I want to keep up with my other language, which I had studied for many years, but neglected due to needing to learn this new language. You mention in the video that it is not helpful to learn both languages on the same day, however for me regardless of the day I must at least speak my second language. Is there a productive way I can fit in my third language (the one I studied for many years)? For example, In the mornings I study that language, and in the evenings I study my new language? I'm interested in your ideas. Thank you.

From my own personal experience it isn't that studying two languages in the same hour that makes you confuse the two languages. For example I learned English and Spanish at the same time. But I didn't study the vocabulary with my native language, I learned Spanish with English. Only sometimes I would mark a word in my notebook in my native language because it was a more accurate translation or description of the word at the time. What I had difficulties with, though, was confusing two languages that I was on a similar level on with each other. I started confusing Spanish and Chinese, although they have nothing in common just because I was on a similar level learning these two languages. When I tried to form a sentence in Spanish my brain would go back to Chinese vocabulary for some reason and I never studied them together. It was very frustrating for me. But I must also say that it was not yet possible for me to think in those languages. My level just wasn't high enough for that yet.

That's interesting! I've been studying Spanish and Japanese, and haven't had this problem because I find that because the languages are so different from each other, it's hard for my brain to get confused. But then everyone is different and the same methods won't work for every single language learner! Good luck with your language studies!

Turkish and Arabic are in two totally different language families. Turkish is part of the Turkic language branch of Indo-European languages while Arabic is a Semitic language.

Loved the tips! I'm just afraid that building personas can sound a little bit offensive when you talk to natives on that languages. Does that makes sense?
@english_with_aga6 жыл бұрын
I can see what you mean! The reason I think it's a useful technique is because it helps you create connections in your memory by associating certain thoughts and images with each other. It doesn't necessary mean that you have to believe that a stereotypical French, etc. person is a certain way. It's just a technique that's meant to help you with your learning. I understand your concerns, though!

It's definitely a good idea to use one language you know to learn another language. Have you also tried writing down French vocabulary with French definitions? I find it useful :)

Guys! I've learned English a while ago; Want to learn German (I have beginner level) and I know next to nothing of Chinese (Mandarin, knowing only the numbers) . Is there any advice particularly related to the time I must spend on each, and the specific input (listening, reading, writing, etc.)? (I have lots of German and Chinese films to watch) Bytheway, my native language is Spanish (Venezuela)

thank you so much for the useful tips. my current condition is I live in Danmark ( i am an Arab) and study high school danish class and at the same time, I have English as a higher level. the teacher and the student use both languages at class. I feel like both of the languages are having a bottle inside my head,( for example, I remember the Danish word when I need the English one when speaking and the vise verse) and I also became worse in English without a real improvement in Danish. how can I balance both languages or at least maintain the levels without mixing up or losing one to another? sorry for the long comment ^-^
