MUBUTV's Ritch Esra sits down with Sam Taylor, Sr. VP A&R Kobalt Music one of the most innovative and broad based companies for artists. They discuss many topics including; What makes Kobalt a unique choice for artists and songwriters, What are Kobalt's criteria for singing an Artist, Songwriter or producer, How the large companies are now Amplifiers, Where is he finding his talent today, What are some of the new models emerging for artists? The role of AWAL, What are biggest mistakes that new artists, songwriters and producers make today. What's the proper amount of time for deals today? What are the most important NON CREATIVE elements he looks for in talent.
Questions asked during video:
0:00 - Intro
0:53 - If you could talk about some of the qualities or some of the aspects of the company that make it a unique choice for artists and bands?
1:55 - Can you talk about what your criteria is for seriously considering taking on an artist or a writer at Kobalt?
3:04 - In listening to you, I’m struck by the dichotomy of it between the artist and the person that you said is greatly talented but the years it takes. Can that talent develop themselves without the assistance of a publisher? And If they can, how?
4:30 - As a senior vice president of A&R at a big company like that, where are you finding you talent today? Is it through the natural sources? Is it through the market? Is it through the forums? Is it through all of the above?
7:11 - You work at a company that’s very innovative, the blending of publishing, administration, label services. I see the business going this way. Kobalt is a classic model of the new innovative industry. What do you think has brought this on where publishers are labels and label services and independents? What do you think has caused this?
8:38 - Kobalt has a program which has recently been in the press that they’re putting a lot of time and money and energy into called AWAL, which is artists without a label. Can you talk about what that is?
9:51 - In your experience, what do you find are the biggest mistakes new and beginning writers and artists are making in the marketplace over the last three years or so? What do you see from your angle?
12:06 - What would you say is the right amount of time that somebody should be looking at if they’re going to be signing a deal timewise?
13:01 - What are the personal qualities that you’re looking for in a person or an artist or a producer that make you say yeah this is somebody I want to do this with or this isn’t for me?

A lot of singer songwriter musicians use the right hand side of their brain which makes them creative. The business side of music requires the left hand side of the brain. Many musicians have dyslexia which adds to this problem and they struggle to market their brand online. This is why they need the help and expertise of a label and publisher. I like your videos they are very informative. Well done keep up the good work.

How exactly do you 'make noise' as a non performing songwriter?
@MUBUTV
@MUBUTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Emma, and thanks so much for your comment. Well if you are just songwriting and looking to get cuts on records or music placed into film & TV, I think the objective for you would be to network and collaborate with as many other artists & writers as possible. Look into your local area and look for maybe songwriting organizations that may exist or any industry networking events. The idea is building your network in your area that will get you into the hearts & minds of other creatives which will in turn get you into some writing sessions or connecting with other artists that may be in fact looking for your type of material. We hope this gives you some direction as to what you are trying to accomplish. If you've haven't done so yet don't forget to subscribe to our channel and thanks so much for being an 'Insider'. MUBUTV

How much publishing do the publishers usually take from a artist and how do you get your masters ?
@MUBUTV
@MUBUTV 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Quay, thanks for your question. It depends, if you sign with a major publisher, usually it’s a 50-50% split. With a more independent publisher it could vary from 50-50 to other percentages. In regards to getting your masters. If you sign with a major again depending on the deal you sign it could vary. With the new 35 year revision law that reverts the rights back to the creators of the work, it all depends. If you’re going it alone and going 100% independent, maybe you sign with a publishing administrator which basically functions just like a publisher only they collect monies on your behalf and they take a small commission fee of around 15% but you own everything including your masters. So something to think about. Hope this helps, and thanks for being an ‘Insider’. MUBUTV

I have a question, how come artists who are performers and not necessarily songwriters get noticed by these big people?
@MUBUTV
@MUBUTV 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rima, thanks so much for your comment and watching our interview with Sam Taylor. To answer your question, they’re are several reasons why certain types of artists get known. Typically it’s because the artist is making noise on their own and the music is connecting with their audience. Sometimes, A&R such as Sam can see something in the artist that they feel they can bring out the full potential from them by connecting them to other songwriters that can in turn bring them to the next level by collaborating etc.so there isn’t really one path it really depends on the circumstances. Each artist is unique and how they get there is different. We hope this answers your question to some degree. Don’t forget to subscribe and stay tuned for more new content coming soon. If you already have 1+ million of fans; THEN WHY THE HELL YOU NEED THE RECORD LABEL IN THE FIRST PLACE? Just give little money to buy yourself a website; set online shopping service and tools, put your website's link on all your social media accounts to direct those 1 million of your fans where they can buy your music and merch. The only reason an artist would need a record label is when he/she has 0 fans and no idea how to promote themselves. That's the moment when the record label should step in.
