Re: Leaving a marriage, finding independence. I was a housewife with no job, no references, and very few outside connections in a city with zero family nearby. It took time to find a minimum wage job, and even longer to find affordable housing. Look into low income housing options in your area and be proactive in calling and emailing to get notified when units open up. If you don’t have references, reach out to the exjw community or former teachers or non jw family. You can even let hiring managers know you've just escaped a cult and do not have references. I had so many people admire my honesty and viewed my determination to leave as an asset. You can do it!

Thank you for posting this! In my 50s and had the same set up. I was a stay at home wife with nothing in my name. Being honest has helped me as well. I was assisted primarily through a domestic abuse center. They helped with housing, medical, counseling, college, etc. I also use food banks, Thrift stores, Snap benefits, you name it to get by. Non-witness friends and relatives really came through as well. If someone has kids, speak to counselors in the schools. They have access to programs you may not be aware of. Contrary to what we have been taught, they are many beautiful people in this world and agencies ready to help. Just put one foot in front of the other and you will be just fine❤

Thank you Jake for this great video! The information and advice you shared on here is gold! I’m personally one of the lucky POMOs because my entire family left the Watchtower cult with me! The only JWs in my immediate family other than myself were my mom, my two sisters and my nephew. Neither my dad or my two brothers or their wives and children were ever JWs. But this is great advice for those who do have their family and friends still trapped in that cult. Yes I’m pissed and I have every reason to be even though my family is out. In a nutshell: I was the first one to wake up and get out of the cult and it was because of what happened to my younger sister. She was sexually abused by an active Jehovah’s Witness from the age of 4 until 11. The elders knew about the abuse and did nothing but cover it up. Because of the coverup I found out that the pedophile had molested children in other congregations. As for my younger sister, she couldn’t bear the pain from the trauma of the abuse and on March 17, 2014 she committed suicide, she was 31. I lost my baby sister to that fucking cult and I want nothing to do with anyone still in it. I have everything I need with me because my entire family also left so I am very grateful for that. Thanks again for another awesome video! Keep them coming!

For anyone underage seeking their independence, enroll in school immediately. It might even help to enroll in an accredited online school so that you can get your degree quietly and without notice. Choose a major where the base salary is at least twice the amount of the tuition and is in high demand in the job market, that way you're not drowning in student debt you cant afford and you have a way of being able to take care of yourself. Gain financial independence, get the well paying job, work and save up, and then MOVE. Start your life over somewhere else. Please be smart about this. In a case like this sometimes pursuing a career that doesn't pay well can possibly deter you, and make this journey long. You can always change careers and do something you really want to do after you make money!

This was great advice Jake. When you first leave you yourself or others make we you feel pressure to decide about the religion bu it’s almost better to not feel pressure to make any decision at all. After a year the external pressure lessens because people just move on and also we start to think more rationally, based on the new life we start to adopt. Things that were level 10 in importance become level 1 or level 0.

Also some practical advice that might help. Try not to trauma dump on your new exJw friends all the time. Read the room, be discerning. Don't make it your identity. If you feel you need to trauma dump, seek a professional. The exJw community is here for you and there are plenty of platforms for you if thats what you need. But just remember when it comes to new relationships, try not to bond only on trauma. Although we have very similar backgrounds, some of us are farther along the journey and dont really want to relive/talk about the toxic experiences of being in the borg all the time. As the scripture says lol theres a time and a place. At some point all of us with the right help will have assimilated into society and unless you're into exJw activism these experience will be a distant thought. We will be too busy enjoying and playing 'catch up' in the 'world.' I wish you guys success. Much unconditional love to you all.

Great video with sound advice. I agree that making plans beforehand is good. The idea you said for younger ones talking to school counsellors etc is excellent. Using the school computers to read up on the JWs might also be handy as parents won't be able to check that search history! I am sure most schools would allow younger folks to make use of equipment if asked. I also agree with plan for the worst and hope for the best. I know folks that still have decent connections with family still in. I know others who are shunned completely. It is almost impossible to gauge what will happen. Just make sure that you have a place to go if you might end up being removed from a house. Also if your job is for a JW then start looking around for something else before you let your JW employer know about your non believing. Not sure about the US and other countries but most libraries in the UK have internet access so maybe sign up with one and use their computers to find out more about the religion, also to look for jobs housing etc. That way again family cannot do a search history on you. The good thing is there are groups that can help and support so reach out. Plenty of good folks willing to help even if just with advice. Good luck to everyone trying to escape.

Then ask them if they think Jehovah will keep his promise to disfellowshipped Jehovah's Witnesses? . He ** MUST ** also appear with rejoicing on YOUR part! . Actually, you could share this in a snail mail letter to your entire congregation. . And tell them that you will swear that Jehovah was right and you have full faith in what he said. . Jeremiah 4:2 And [if] you will certainly swear, ‘As Jehovah is alive in truth, in justice and in righteousness!’ then in him the nations will actually bless themselves, and in him they will boast about themselves.” . When you get shunned just hold your head high while shaking it in disgust at them! . .

Not ex-JW, but left another cult. My personal advice is that once cult leaders start looking at you with suspicion, you're probably not going to get back in their good graces; so unless you feel your physical safety is at risk and you're playing along until you can get away, I strongly suggest not agreeing to, showing up for, or staying in any conversations or meetings where they scold you or try to convince you to stay. I wanted so badly to be above board and honorable that I sat through multiple deeply disturbing lectures with cult leaders, and it cost me my mental health for several years afterwards. You do not owe them niceties; you don't owe them a fair hearing; you don't owe them explanations. Please protect and prioritize yourself; you will need it.

@@desdichado31 Only in the kingdom created by Watchtower. The God of Christianity is YHWH. One God. Father. Son. Holy Ghost. These are YHWH. One GOD. Watchtower teaches YHWH=Jehovah. One PERSON. Nothing like this can be found in scripture, that is why Watchtower wrote the NWT. Bible=Word of God. NWT=ever changing word of Watchtower.

So it is OK for you to ignore ALL problems among your own religion but blame ALL other religions for their problems, is that not hypocritical?

@@desdichado31 Sorry bro, but did the Bible also teach that ALL humen are sinners including JWs. How it is possible for JWs to be sinnfull but without errors and mistakes at the same time? Is that not a paradoxon?

I left because I was dedicated to Jehovah and believe him rather than a bunch of men: . See this end time prophecy from Jehovah himself: . Isaiah 66:5 HEAR THE WORD OF JEHOVAH, YOU men who are trembling at his word: “YOUR brothers that are hating YOU, that are excluding YOU by reason of my name, said, ‘May Jehovah be glorified!’ He must also appear with rejoicing on YOUR part, and they are the ones that will be put to shame.” . [Name of person] is no longer one of JEHOVAH's Witnesses ----->> excluding YOU by reason of MY NAME . Is there any other end time denomination that uses Gods actual name to excommunicate brothers in their congregation? . Do you think Jehovah will keep his promise to disfellowshipped Jehovah's Witnesses? . He ** MUST ** also appear with rejoicing on YOUR part! . What Jehovah said would happen during the time of the end, is really happening! . So who is right? . Jehovah? . Or . Eight men who live in New York? . I have faith in Jehovah! . .
