Michael Singer’s definition of spirituality is spot on! We create our suffering because we want the moment to be something other than what it is.

For me, I need to go a little deeper than that. Of course I want my reality to be different than it is if it is painful. I don’t see any problem in that. But I think what Michael is saying is let that reality wash over and through you, so when the fire is over, it’s over. And don’t hold it inside of you, but let that reality wash over you and recognize that it hurt, sometimes unbearably, but it is over. And say to yourself, “I can handle it.” The big question is can you handle and release all of your PAST blocks? That’s what I’m trying to figure out. 😢

When The Student Is Ready, The Teacher Appears …..I have followed various teachers for years and I like to dance between them because I find a common message, yet I am encouraged to keep an open perspective. What I find common above all is that spiritual is SIMPLE. What isn’t simple is the work that is required to rewire. And it is difficult for a reason, so that when we sit with that difficult moment, we realize that people are not purposely turning up to cause mayhem, and when we clear the clutter or start the process, we can feel the difference and then be it………..

I've been pushing it down for most if not all of my 55 year's and it started coming up after my mum past away 4 year's ago, when i started using weed for chronic pain ive been dealing with since an accident I had when I was 2 year's old it was near fatal and my parents were told I wouldn't and shouldn't have survived, I believe my mum felt guilty as it was her negligence that caused it and she took that guilt out on me as she used to say to me don't you dare make me look like a bad mother,she made me feel unloved and unwanted that I wasn't right in the head but now I know I kept zoning out when I felt traumatised by her constant shouting if she felt I did something wrong including the fact that she had to keep taking me to hospital appointments due to the accident or I was rushed in due to complications due to it,but she was always angry about it and she made it clear her whole life that nothing was her fault.she mostly ignored me,rarely a kind word or a smile,she kept them for my brothers and anyone else pretty much,well it's left me with a voice telling me I'm ugly,not good enough, weird, no confidence, no self worth and not be able to think about anyone but myself

Great interview! I love Michael Singer, he is so genuine! He has so many teachings, all free. 37:55 letting go, relax and release. He speaks elsewhere about how you may want to think of it as relaxing back to your seat of consciousness and how anxiety, and various feelings that are coming up, don't know how to relax but you can relax into and tap into your witness consciousness. By doing that you are allowing it to come up, to recognize it and let it go rather than pushing it back down. For me, when I'm unaware and not in touch with my seat of consciousness it feels like all the thoughts or feelings are around the front of my face and I feel like I have very narrow vision. When I am closer to or in my seat of consciousness, I feel peaceful and my vision and awareness opens up. 39:12 from full witness consciousness there is no one there to let go and it just flows naturally up and out. If anyone has any notes this section of the talk especially, I'd welcome them.

🐟 15. SUFFERING & HAPPINESS: To understand the nature of suffering, it is ABSOLUTELY imperative to first distinguish suffering from pain (and too, happiness from pleasure). There is a spectrum of pleasure and pain, with an extremely narrow neutral mid-point. Obviously, what constitutes a pleasurable or painful experience is dependent on an individual person's unique preferences. Not everybody likes the taste of chocolate. The feeling of pleasure/pain does NOT, ultimately, come from any external stimulus, believe it or not. It is located entirely in the mind and/or the intellect. That is the reason why highly-advanced spiritual adepts are able to renounce practically all pleasure-seeking activities, content with consuming simple foodstuffs and adequate sleep, and find continuous peace, happiness, and joy, within themselves (“ātmarāma” or “sva-sthaḥ”, in Sanskrit). Furthermore, the adjudication of whether a certain experience is either pleasurable or painful for a particular person can VARY according to circumstance. For example, one may have enjoyed consuming dairy products as a child, but as a vegetarian/vegan adult, find the taste of putrefied milk (cheese, yoghurt, butter, etc.) to be revolting. For one who is dying of starvation, the consumption of cactus leaves may seem to be rather pleasing to the senses, even though, in normal circumstances, it may be distasteful. There are THREE kinds of pleasure/pain: physical, emotional, and financial. For instance, consuming one’s favourite kind of fruit is physically pleasurable. Being hit by a falling coconut - physical pain. Falling in love is an example of psycho-emotional pleasure. Being angry at another - psychological pain. Winning a lottery is an example of financial pleasure. Being robbed - financial pain. There are three origins or CAUSES of pleasure/pain: one’s own body/mind (“adhyātma”, in Sanskrit) other persons/animals (“adhibhūta”, in Sanskrit), and material nature (“adhidaiva”, in Sanskrit). Some “suffer” pain from lack of money. Others “suffer” pain from an abundance of wealth. Some “suffer” pain from lack of food. Others “suffer” pain from an abundance of food. The quality of the “suffering” is different but the NATURE of the “suffering” is the same. OBVIOUSLY, in the previous paragraph, the term “suffer” is used in the stead of “experience”, because that is how the word is used in everyday parlance, in order to draw attention to the fact that pain can be due to an abundance of material opulence as well as a lack of material wealth. GENUINE suffering, on the other hand, is the result of mistaking oneself to be the author of one’s thoughts and actions, and other persons to be fully in control of their own thoughts and deeds. There are five forms (or symptoms) of suffering - all PSYCHOLOGICAL in nature: 1. Guilt/Shame 2. Blame/Bitterness 3. Pride/Arrogance 4. Worry/Anxiety 5. Regrets about the past and expectations for the future/Attachment to outcomes (i.e. being inattentive or negligent to the present moment) Suffering can be COMPLETELY transcended by understanding its source and consciously avoiding its manifestations. For example, as a child, your mother may have been particularly violent towards you. As clearly demonstrated in the chapter dealing with free-will, her violence was wholly due to her genetics and societal conditioning, neither of which were under her control. Blaming your mother for her actions leads to psychological anguish, which can only be cured by focusing on the sense of “I am”. In other words, by resorting to one’s essential nature (knowing one’s innermost being to be Pure Consciousness), one is emancipated from all sorrow. The initial feeling of anger towards your mother was a natural reaction to her violence, but the enduring resentment is existential misery. Any physical pain you may have experienced was just that - pain. That pain is not to be discounted, but it has probably faded-away into the distant past. The psychological distress or torment that you are currently experiencing is the ACTUAL suffering, and it can easily be negated by a proper attitude to life. When we contemplate painful past events (or possible future events) those thoughts occur, ostensively, in the present. It is simply not possible to experience the past or future - only the present moment and the thoughts and feelings of the present are experienced. Therefore, it is important to understand and acknowledge that suffering can only occur in the present and can be cured with mindful practices. It is beneficial to also consult a qualified psychotherapist on a regular basis, in order to slowly heal from such mental angst. When a man kicks his pet dog, the dog does NOT spend the remaining years of its life being angry or resentful towards its master. Dogs have very little concept of past, present and future, but live their lives from moment to moment. How unfortunate it is that lower animals are naturally more at peace with their circumstances.

Michael says we are all born to 'cling', to things (the material world) that define us like mommy, blankie, family, crib, job, husband, wife, etc. He says that to 'not' associate at an early age would be very psychically damaging. So, if we are born into this behavior, how and why should we be able to 'release' these things that were beneficial to us at the start of our lives?

Great question,guessing as children it’s for ‘our survival ‘so we all cling to our stuff,traumas etc and because we haven’t learned about free will and how to intentionally relax and release situations as they come/show up..but as we grow our job is doing that work and learning not to cling ,to relax and release and we only learn that through suffering.Once we see it is never enough with the stuff outside.The true work is internal
@THFrenchteacher11 ай бұрын
Perhaps if we were born to enlightened beings, our journey would not be about letting go because we would have learned that. Our parents pass their beliefs and ideas on to us. When those beliefs and ideas no longer serve us and we suffer, we need to do the internal work. Perhaps.
@kimhoyer9 ай бұрын
I think the key here is early age. Your examples with mommy, blankie, etc. make a lot more sense to me anyway than husband, wife etc. When we were older I think the idea is we put aside childish things and we stop clinging the positive stuff and resisting the negative stuff...instead we experience life as it actually is, let it pass through us, and get ready to experience the next moment that's presented to us. Our job then, is to try and dance with the moment and lift it up if we can.

I think its easy for someone with his life experiences to let go of fear. But I didn't choose to hold on to my ptsd and trauma as a child. I go through life carrying a baggage of fear and anxiety with me not because I want to, but because it's just the evolutionary biology of my body.
@Michelle-bv1ko10 күн бұрын
Not sure I understand how we push away/down the fear of that rattlesnake in front of us, or how we let that uncomfortable feeling, whatever it might be, "pass through" us? It's instinctive, surely, to let a good feeling wash all over (through?) us, but fear? We tense up in the face of feeling fear, getting ready to either fight the stimulus or flee from it...we don't stick around waiting to see what will happen next... fighting or fleeing from a potentially or really threatening situation is a strategic response to a rapidly developing predicament. The decision to pick up a rock & club the snake or run as fast as possible away from it, is instantaneous. Once we no longer feel threatened, then we can relax, do some Qi Gong, whatever... But we learn to deal with rattlesnake-style threats or any other form of physical threats. Very different from the type of 'threats' posed by the friend who appears to be ignoring us a week after being really nice the last time we met. We learn to mistrust especially if there's been a history of conflict or fickleness: the child who experiences repeated abuse or the partner who is repeatedly unfaithful. In these cases, learning to trust again is definitely a process that demands time and therapy to stop the mistrust or to let go of the grudges.

The question of what to do when fear enters on your path for my spirituality.... is that I have no attachment to it and allow the energy to be free to move on like a cloud. Some clouds are dark and ominous, some are fluffy and light, some storm and some bring precipitation. I bless them all and allow movement to happen. I breathe in and out and naturally connect my Soul with that which is. I Am That I Am. Eternally Protected. Blessed Be. Peace to the World.

This has nothing to do with dealing with the pain of reality because my mother died a horrible death that was reality and my siblings decided to not show up, that’s reality. I was alone to grieve that’s reality. There’s a pain in my heart that won’t go away from this and that’s reality. The fact that they don’t care about me that’s reality.
