Great video, to the point and fixed my problem exactly. Ideal instruction video. Much appreciated!

Doors with glass panels are not meant to be completely balanced as the top panel is making its way down the radius. The standard balance test, according to DASMA, is to raise the door to a mid-way position, and let go. If it stays in place, your door is balanced. I do agree though that doors WITHOUT a glass panel will demonstrate a less dramatic slam as the door is coming to a close. Beware though when putting tension on those big whoppers up there - if the spring is only rated for a certain amount of turns, you can prematurely break the spring. (I am sure this is knowledge that you already possess - just one garage door tech to another) Nice vid!

Hi, very interesting video and Thank you for posting! I got a double very heavy garage door (we are in hurricane zone) which is out of balance because is almost impossible to lift it manuanlly. I follwed your video and I found that I can't rotate the springs any more, they are totaled compressed. What should be the issue here, are the springs damaged, old and need to be replaced?. The whole garage door and lifting system was changed in 2015. Thank you

If you have Wayne-Dalton Torque master springs, they are enclosed in a metal tube so you can definitely adjust old ones. But yes, wear a full face hockey or motorcycle helmet if adjusting old exposed torsion spring

The only improvement that I would add is prior to tightening the set screws is to tap them over a 1/4". That way the spring coils don't bind.
@johnh95072 жыл бұрын
do you mean add a little length because springs tend to get tighter as you wind them up ?

Do both springs exert the same directional force? i mean are both springs there to lighten the door? my door is super heavy to lift manually and the spring on the left seems much more unwound and longer than the spring on the right when the door is down.
@johnh95072 жыл бұрын
the cable tension is the most important at first, if uneven it pulls one side up before the other
@johnh95072 жыл бұрын
i didnt see where he leveled the door ? is one cable tighter than the other and its pulling it up uneven ?

Thanks for this video. I used it to adjust the ramp in my car hauler, and I still have all of my teeth. One note for those watching, he does his adjustments with the door closed. I assumed that I'd do the same on the drop ramp on a trailer, but it's the opposite. You need to adjust the spring while it's under maximum tension. For a garage door, that's when the door is closed. For a drop ramp on a trailer, it's when the ramp is down.

Unfortunately, all the videos I've seen have springs like this one, but mine is different. The springs must be inside the tube that runs across the width of the door, and there are adjustment "dials" on either end with nice orange warning tags attached. Still searching...

One of my garage doors is a two car garage and has wood on the outside so it is heavy as a mo-fo. I just had a spring break so I had to replace it. I decided to go ahead and replace all of them (there are three springs total). I wound each of the springs a total of about 28 quarter turns. The door was still heavy when first starting to open the door so I went ahead and wound them an additional two quarter turns. The door is still kind of heavy at the bottom however it is balanced in the middle (won't go up or down) so I was wondering if it is ok? The opener motor doesn't appear to be struggling but just wanted to make sure. I know I could probably add more quarter turns, but I don't want to over torque the springs.

it seems like he's violating one of the main safety rules which is to never put your face in the rotational path of the adjustment bar. If the spring breaks at the opposite end, the bar could spin around and take out an eye or worse

You do know that if you have 2 springs the other spring will hold the cable tension so you don’t need the vise grips.

The door shouldn't be that heavy after a year your springs are obviously shit. How many max turns can that spring take 8 ? U just put it at 8 so what happens in another year have to adjust them again also on a double u don't need to vice grip one spring will hold the tension

Not helpful at ALL way to not discuss what tools to use and just talk about adjusting it from 20 feet away… Should be called “how to balance a garage for people who already know how to balance a garage”
