Really impressed how the tie beams dropped into place. Laying out clearly was so accurate right from the start.

Those oak beams really are good and chunky. It would be interesting to know if the oak was supplied to your joiner as being seasoned. As a structural engineer who does a lot of timber design, when any section we are looking at has a dimension of 100 mm or more, then we have to treat that section as being green, ie any drying will not have necessarily gone right through the whole section and will have only gone through the outer 50 mm all around! We therefore have to take a 20% reduction in the allowable stresses for that section.

Interesting!!! These beams are classed as Green and they are large considering the clear spans being relatively small in the case of the garage door openings... the tie beams span is larger but the loads through the studwork gables that we will build over them once the 18mm sheathing is all fixed on is sent towards the ends nicely, I would love to understand how engineers like you work these things out, I have a lot of respect for that!!!

Oak beams must have been very straight (or with slight bow up) to be able to slip the centre column under after the load was carried by the outer corner columns.

Brilliant Robin! This is where your use of a rod, instead of a tape measure, really comes into its own eh😊! Only thing I would say is “ a squirt of WD40 might help with the squeaky lift”🤣🤣. Seriously though, another stage of the job well done👍
