Beautiful shots... Let's say instead of the evening light it was completely overcast. How would you give more of a 3 dimensional look to the talent? I can see the Negative fill coming in handy, but without the sun to bounce would you need something like a light to fill with?
@carstenschlag6 ай бұрын
I just had to do this on a commercial recently! Pretty much the answer (at least at the level I work at) is just use big NEG! Unless you have a lot of budget and crew trying to use lights will almost always feel unnatural. And with overcast you already have your soft light just take as much away as you need depending on the ratio you want and your good to go! To do this I recommend using a 12x12 neg. It gets harder and harder to do the smaller neg you use. If it’s just a single static close up you can get away with a 4x4 floppy but anything wider or with multiple people the bigger you can get the better. Hope that helps!! Appreciate you watching !

I definitely LOLed when she opened the urgent letter. Nice work! I’m just getting into lighting scenes and manipulating the sun. Can you do a video on some necessary light stands and other necessary gaffer equipment for hanging diffusion material and or hair lights, overhead lights ect. I currently own the Zhiyun Molus x100 and the G200. I’ve got unbleached muslin and shower curtains and bed sheets white and black. I just need to know what stands and other things are needed to rig all this up.

Haha I’m glad you enjoyed my dumb humor! It sounds like you’re actually in a pretty good place gear wise. I’d suggest getting a couple cstands and a junior boom arm and some sandbags. That would be a good solid place to start! I’ll add it to the list of videos tho!! Appreciate you watching man!!

Such a great helpful video. Was this AM or PM?
@carstenschlag6 ай бұрын
Thanks man! So glad it’s helpful! This was PM but AM would have looked exactly the same light wise. It really all depends on your scenes blocking. If the sun will be where you need in the am shoot then. In this case for it to hit across the yard it needed to be PM. Only difference is if you do shoot in the morning shoot your wide first and work in from there. Since the light will be best first in that scenario ( so backwards of what I said in the vid) hope that was helpful! Really appreciate you watching!

Bro! You're lying about how you actually lit the wide shot at 1:05. I can see it and know what you did there! What gives it away is not only the fill that all of a sudden comes from the left onto her entire body, lighting it to a degree that would not have been acheivable when placing the muslin out of the frame, so you had to go up close and follow her movement and mask it in post. And I can prove it with the absolute lack of movement in the background except for two tiny things you missed. There is something flying through the top right third of the frame of the wide shot, with weird choppy interruptions - that's where it moves in and out of the mask overlay. And the window obove her head - first it opens as if sped up in a weird motion and then you can see somebody's arm coming out of it and its movement is also super choppy and stops super abrubtly. You are aware that you can go frame by frame in a KZbin video, aren't you? Also she is slightly out of focus and there is artifacts around her and a weird blur when wakling out of the frame, so she is likely masked as well. So it is obvious that this is a composit shot. A totally legit and creative technique and used thousands of times before. The question only is, why not tell us? Why lie about it and say you didn't modify at all? I saw that there was something fishy right away.
@carstenschlag6 ай бұрын
Hey man! First off, really appreciate you watching and watching so thoroughly lol. Honestly I wish I knew how to do vfx but i would have literally no idea how to do what you are saying. What you are seeing in the Change of contrast is when we back out our big neg we obviously will get more fill. All that is hitting her is just the sun, that’s why timing wides is so important so you can get polished looking lighting without actually lighting it. The thing that flew through was a bird lol. The weird choppy interruptions may be from KZbin compression (honestly I still don’t see anything there). The blur you are seeing when she walks out of frame is there, but it’s because like I have talked about in my color grading videos I like to add blur and vignette to the edges of my frame to give more vintage lens character when shooting on super clean glass. Also she is slightly out of focus, I can give you that haha that was just bad operating on my part. If you still don’t believe me, shoot me your email and I’ll send you the log clip. I’d never lie to you, I promise! Appreciate you!
