Wonderful breakdown of a simple outdoor shoot in direct sunlight. That ping of light you like on the actors left side is most likely a reflection from the ground from behind the talent. Especially since those rocks are basically acting like a giant bounce with a semi unbleached muslin color. If you can't see it, its likely because you are in a less reflective area or you just need to scoot your floppy towards camera a smidgen. Just a quick catch, the pins on the floppy are baby (3/8) pins not Junior.

FTL Studios. Thank you for your comment. I hate it when I say those pins or mounts wrong. Thanks for the catch.

How does a 4x4 go in outdoor use? Is it okay in most cases on a c-stand with a shot bag? I worry about things falling over in wind

nice! but don't you get overexposed background? the silk should decrese the sunlight of 1-2 stops, doesen't it?
@UpHillCinema6 жыл бұрын
0nomercy0 The original file was actually about two stops under exposed on their faces and then lift it back up to proper exposure in post.

Did you have another bounce in there somewhere? Looking at the catch lights at 5:13 seems like you had something below and to camera right.

Michael Strout Nice catch Michael. Yes! I used a small white bounce, but only oh him. That was because I wanted to fill in the shadows from his hat. Great catch my friend. Hopefully people read this conversation because everyone could learn from it. Thanks for the question.

It's hard to tell, but it looks like there you can see the bounce reflection in other shots as well. 0:30 and again at 0:32, for example, there is a faint catch light in the bottom right part of the eyes. I wonder if you had set the bounce board off to the side or on the ground for some shots and it still ended up as a catch light even if it wasn't adding to exposure. I guess it's also possible it's just the sun hitting the ground causing that type of catch light as well.

Michael Strout Great observations Michael. I know the only times I used a bounce was for the two talents I shot, one of which didn't make the edit. The only thing I can think of is the second AC who was slating. He was standing camera right for every shot. The ground could as you mention, be bouncing into their eyes too.

Not that I can recall. One thing that I was thinking about is how what we are seeing is flip. What I mean by that is the silk key is on the talents right, but we are viewing it on the left. For example, me in the reflection on the mans glasses and 0:35 It looks like Im on the right, but Im actually Im on the cameras left. Also you can see exactly whats lighting them, no bounce or antyhing.

Great video. I noticed one of the guys wore sunglasses and you could see the reflection of the camera, equipment and operator in them. How did you tackle this? Did you leave it that way in the final product, or was there post work done? It's something I've always been curious about but don't seem to find many answers to.

That is an amazing question. I did leave it in the final do that the fact I to film, edit and grade this in one day. You can ether pull the footage into after effects and get rid of the camera in post. Or shot at and angle. When shooting strait on, into a mirror you'll always find this as a problem. You can also film a blank slate and compose the footage together in post too.
