I've been playing off and on since 2.0 and somehow this is literally the first time I have seen someone explain how the limit gauge charges. I always thought it was generated by each weaponskill/spell used by the party.

I used to think it was based on crits! the more you crit on the boss, the more lb you'd generate, but I was so wrong..

Yeah I'm definitely going to recommend watching this. I have been playing the game for 7 years and have actively participated in the speeds raid scene, most likely because LB generation can be precisely planned and is not random (thus having no "chance" of taking longer to build), is a gigantic gain to group DPS even with healer losses (can be proven with basic math), and is the center of all rotational and heal/mitigation planning for those effected in a speed running setting. i mean m-me-meow, good video :3

As the person in charge of the LB planning for a speedgroup, it is indeed a lot of work. The math itself is pretty straightforward, but planning scenarios that can plausibly hapen with no real executional strain AND allocating proper healing resources to specific scenarios is extremely stressful and requires being on the same page as the rest of the team.

@@CaroKannffxiv Fantastic! I am not in the Apollo event myself (I needed a break after 6.4), but I look forward to coming back ready for 7.0. I wrote the LB plans for RNG Factory, so I have a huge appreciation for your videos clarifying the methods by which it is generated. (and am glad Jacklyn, Acedia, and Apollo helped out, as well!)

I don't even savage raid let alone get into parsing or speedkilling raid bosses, but I *have* dabbled in the overlooked art of synced co-op dungeon speedruns. Seeing this broken down makes me wonder if it might be possible to get an extra LB in some of the older dungeons where you only barely get one by the end of a fast run through passive generation... Might not be possible but it's given me something to think about, so thanks!

Oh but definitely! There's some extremely cool cheeses you can do, but it can be tough since youre often not brining a healer in dungeon speedruns. Since youre with 4 you only have 3 timmies and a tank to generate off of which isnt a lot either, but its definitley not impossible.

If you are watching this post 7.1, you may be aware that limit break generation got a major change. In ultimate content, and only in ultimate content, if you bring multiples of the same job (duplicate jobs), you no longer gain penalty points to lower your Passive LB generation. Instead, all passive LB generation is fully canceled. I can confidently say that every single ultimate up until this point is still clearable using duplicate jobs. UCOB - Extremely easy. PF will be able to do this with proper strategy. UWU - Easy. PF might be able to do it even. There are numerous points of free generation, granted targeted mit is not used. TEA - Tough. You either have to rez cheese through the transition, generate an LB2 with massive mits, or generate a full LB3. All options are not PF viable and will require some proper planning. DSR - Tough. You can use the simple fact that looping the fight does not reset your LB guage. This means that you can kill haurchefaunt over and over again until you get the LB you need, however, PF viability is debatable, since without any LB planning you do need to loop the fight a bunch of times. TOP - Extremely hard. I advise you not to attempt this. I know a strategy that will be able to clear this fight, but I'm not ready to share it since I'm keeping it for when I inevitably want to try it myself. However, I can confirm that it is clearable.

Back in 2.0 auto attacks were generating significant amount, did they changed that or we just mistook passive generation for aa's?

That still works, but the generation was nerfed quite a bit since Shadowbringers. To give you some numbers, a single critical mitigation tick would award you 1500 units, as opposed to the 300 it is today. Simply said, it used to be 5x stronger. You can see this in UWU and UCOB speedkills, where a single raidwide can generate over a full LB bar out of nowhere (Kindred's Garuda is a great example). Since auto attacks were so bloody prevalent back in the day and actually hit quite hard, generation from auto attacks was a main source for groups. Nowadays, you have to deal with aoe healing, way more unavoidable passive healing on tanks and simply less autoattacks that also don't hit as hard. Combined with the fact that you only get 300 instead of 1500 means that generally you don't see teams going for auto attack gen, except for usually the first 5 autos. But the higher the ceiling for speedkilling is pulled, the more likely it is that we will see more auto attack generation in the future as we try to squeeze the little bits out of LB gen.

Does shielding (damage absorb) interfere with critical mitigation or does it count as part of it? i.e. does it look at if the raw damage is more than current hp, or does it look at if the damage is more than current hp + shields? Based on the clips, it looks like shields would interfere, otherwise I'd expect you to be making ample use of them, but I want to clarify anyways.

The shield works! Shields are part of mitigation. So if you have 1000 health, a 100 shield and the ability deals 1050 damage, you will generate, as the shield is the reason you lived. As you said, it looks at current HP excluding shields when calculating an LB tick. This is why Spreadlo is such an incredible tool as its a massive shield thats always the same size due to the consistent crit. We would use more shields simply if there were more shields to use, unfortunately, a lot of shields are locked behind GCDs like Succor, so we tend to avoid them as much as possible. In spreadlo's case, it's simply so powerful that using it for lb generation will be a bigger gain than that 1 extra broil, so it gets a pass. Other than that theres seraphs, which has a super small shield that you can indeed make good use of. The reason we don't bring a paladin or a warrior for the veil and shake it off is simply because their abilities don't just shield, they HEAL as well, and these heals can crit like crazy and completely mess up the thresholds we're aiming for. That's why consistent 10%s like DRK and GNB have are way easier to plan around. So yeah, shields are great, super nice actually, but the tools to get them are rare and sometimes inconsistent.

Clemency is not a healer ability, so unfortunately it does not work. Only healers can generate through healing!

Im not sure what you mean with Critical Damage, but ability interupts I left in the "fight specific" section, as interrupts nowadays are really rare. Not a single fight in Endwalker uses interupts (to generate) as far as I know, but Im down to cover old generation as well. Its hard to keep the video short and relevant, so Im not surprised if I missed some stuff!

@@CaroKannffxiv Yeah Idk what critical damage means exactly as well, that's why I was hoping you'd address it. Dunno whether it means every crit, or just a threshold of damage, I see this mentioned in every limit break guide when searching, but there's so little information on the exact details that it's frustrating. I've experienced it firsthand though, when running blue mage, doing the full final sting opener does "critical damage" evidently, filling a large portion of the limit gauge. I think at one point during the run we got a full bar of limit break from one or two final stings? The boss died soon after ofc.

@@Grimnoire Hmm, well critical damage generation doesn't exist. You cannot generate LB by dealing damage, thats why I wouldn't address it. (There is KILLING mobs that can gain LB, but thats fight specific stuff). I'm happy to check out this final sting opener you mentioned, but I don't actually play a lot of blue outside some casual spell gathering. I'm already genuinely a bit confused about LB generation within Blue Mage content, as Blue Mage cannot actually use LB from what I know. This large filling of limit guage could be linked to something else, or theres some tech with final sting that I'm not aware about. If you have any more details I can look into it

I got soooo annoyed was doing a current trial tye boss was almost dead as a RDM spotted a dragoon thought they would do LB3 but then...*eye twitches horribly * the tank decided to use the limit break and I'm like...I have a dislike of dealing with fools

Things like that are the reason I stopped playing. Tanks using lb unless its needed for a mechanic annoys the crap out of me, would rather the healer use it even just to heal up people. My rule as a melee was always wait until about 5% and then use it, again use to annoy me when a caster would use it.. which I believe now it doesnt matter as all dps do the same damage now yeah? Which makes sense tbh

@BlazeBuds unfortunately it does not I wish but melee does the most follow by caster then ranged I could be wrong but I haven't heard of a patch note making them all balanced. Because melee does the highest damage and caster after their the two more highest of all around dps. So if there melee they get first shot follow by caster and then ranged but that also varies if the boss move alot the Brad should get priority. If raid ultimate or savage learning mechanics then healer get priority unless there is a raid aoe required for a tank to use LB3 which is rare like 3 or less bosses I know a tank needs to pop a LB3

Ok… so… you risk your entire raid dying for some LB charge…. Ok I had no idea about that… it feels like it’s too much to be juggling with people’s HP bars, doing all the mechanics correctly at the same time as doing your rotation perfectly… why are people so insane?

Yeah im not going to bother watching this. I played the game for 9 years and no one has ever bothered with this, most likely because it probably has a chance of taking longer to build it up anyway and lb does f all damage in the big scheme of things and you should never be relying on that for dps

99.99% of people will never need to think about this, yeah. This is for speedrunning and parsing. If you're not in a static who's willing to run the same duty repeatedly to try to get the best possible run, then you shouldn't bother thinking about this.

I mean yeah, it's probably not going to help you much, but speedrunners love tech like this. An extra LB1, 2, or 3 absolutely saves seconds on a pull.

This can actually come in handy for trying to get tank/healer LB3 a little earlier. For example, in P6S, At the cost of mitigating the initial raidwide a little differently, you can guarantee having the LB3 ready in case Chex Mix goes sideways. Otherwise, you can be a quarter to half a bar off and it feels terrible. Also, I feel like most players don't know the LB generation mechanics and it's hard to bother with a thing if you don't know you can interact with it.

True! One of my next goals is to make lb gen more involved in world race, as it genuinely could speed up prog as long as you just know what youre doing (which most teams just kinda dont in world prog since they never speed).
