Wife and I retired, late 60’s, sold our Las Vegas Home March 2023 and moved to our our apartment in Southern Spain. After 3 months we leave the Schengen. Either back to the US and/or Mexico. We just completed one month touring Turkey, one month in Ireland, and one month in Scotland/UK. Back in Spain for one month. Friends and family shake their heads asking how we do it. It’s a learning curve but discovery, learning, foods, culture, people are what it’s all about. We are living our best lives now. Thank you both for your presentation. Very well done.

My grandparents did this long, long ago. They kept it simple. Canada, every Summer, Mexico every Winter. The rest of the time Massachusetts. This was in the 1960's through to 1990. They did big travel trailer excursions with their friends. They took me one Summer with the "Holiday Rambler Club". We did a week long rally ( big endless party ) at the Indie Speedway grounds then drove Cross Country, all the way up through British Columbia, then all the way across Canada. What a blast. To be bit by the travel bug at 13. They were such a blessing to my life!

This is exactly what I have decided to do based on 2 years of thousands of expat videos. I was constantly changing my mind on the best place for me. Then I realized I am not going to know until I visit . I plan to spend 1-2 years slow travel before I decide. I am going to rent my home in the us out in case after all these travels I decide to come back Hopefully I will start in the fall

I am a former Army brat and lived in Panama as a kid. Now we have a small second home in Mexico. I like to travel but there is nothing like actually living abroad. In a way, tourist travel is just another form of consumption. It's fun, but just doesn't open your mind and heart the way actually living in another place does, especially if you also work on learning the language.

This is my dream but my husband is not as keen. We downsized a few years ago so we have a very simple life at home to allow us as many options as possible. I'm hoping as we start visiting some of these places, maybe he'll fall in love with some of them. Or maybe I'll do some adventuring on my own. We're doing Japan later this year and I'm doing Chile (pumas in the wild!) on my own next. Lots of Europe next year so here we go!

I love that idea!!! I could not keep a home, but living in a country for 90 days or 6mos (panama comes to mind) is definitely doable. No HOAs, no maintenance, no calls on the weekend that the a/c went out or the pool has a leak. I went to panama for 10 days and I know I would LOVE to go back. I have plans to sell my home and do it when I retire at 62. 1 year and 11 months.

Guess the KZbin algorithm is right on! My wife and I have been casually talking about different semi-retirement options the last year or so. We started discussing exactly what you both are doing! I wanted to move to Portugal, she doesn’t want to be tied to a single location and return every year. And we both want to keep our home in the states. Thought about renting our place seasonally and picking a different country or 2 each year for 3-4 months! Glad to see there’s proof of concept, Flex-patting sounds perfect!! This is exactly what I’m planning to do in retirement (in 18 days!). As a Canadian in Ontario, I’m allowed to leave for 7 months a year and still retain my OHIP (Ontario medicare). Most Canadians must be in their home province for 6 months, but for Ontario it is 5 months residency to retain OHIP. We also can take a year away every 5 years and still retain our provincial health coverage. I do get travel insurance as well. I plan on spending most of my time in my condo in Costa Rica, but will slow travel when it is rented. Love the term Flex-pat living.

I'm new to your videos, having only watched two, so far. I've traveled a good bit in Europe and UK using tourist visa. I suppose you move in and out of Schengen countries? When you move from France to London, for example, is there no problem at customs? When you left US, didn't you have to book a return flight? I have thought many times of traveling exactly in your flexpat style, but was concerned about entering a new country. Thank you so much for responses.

Great video!! I don't like the word "retired"....but I took my pensions and left the utility industry in Southern California three years ago at the age of 50. I moved to Belize, a country I fell in love with years ago and where I already owned property. There is a lot of wisdom contained in this video! I am nearing the end of my quest for permanent residency here in Belize, which is a long and complicated process. Basically like having a green card in the US. I have never heard the term "flex-pat" before, but that is my plan for the future. When I finish building my home here in Belize, it will be my home base. I want to spend time in a lot of other countries. You can always spend more when traveling, but when you focus on actually experiencing the country and living like a local, it's often much, much cheaper than you would think. Eat local food )) Take the bus )) Go to the National Parks for $5 instead of paying $200 per person to take a tourist van to the same place!! The vast majority of people all over are really nice folks just living their lives. If you are humble and sincere, you will have a wonderful time pretty much wherever you go.

I live flex Pat life! Right now I am in Vienna for a month and before this I was in Nice, France for a month! I usually pick shoulder seasons to do this! I have done Costa Rica for 3 months, Cap D’Ail for 3 months, Buenos Aires for 3 and 2 months different years, Medellin for 2 months, spain for 1 month but second month I had to fly home for medical reason, Split Croatia for a month then right into Budapest for a month. Now I am in my 70s and the health insurance is much more expensive so that is a drawback and don’t usually get it! I use these places as bases and then travel by day or weekend or such to others places in area! I usually only eat out once a day but sometimes not at all and sometimes all meals (not breakfast). I join a gym or expats group in that city to meet people!

First of all, great job! Your tips and advice are spot on, true, and worth following. My husband and I have been doing pretty much the same for the past 4 years, except we kept our home in the USA. We travel 6 (not consecutive) months a year, and we've been to or lived at most of the places you have. The one thing we haven't been able to find is short term rentals outside Airbnb or similar, especially at low budget locations. Most rentals won't come furnished, or include the Internet, not to mention that utilities are also not included. We always make sure a rental has a/c or heat, depending on the season, as well as a washing machine. We are currently in Italy, then Romania, then Poland, then. . . We will be looking for you on our travels! Blessings!

I maintain my permanent residence in Ensenada, Mexico, a seaside village 50 miles south of San Diego. I retired at 47 and bought a home in a resort community with mostly retired American expats. My monthly fixed expenses are around USD 400, including all utilities and HOA. So, I have been able to live off my savings for last 11 years. I have also opened a small restaurant to supplement my income and also to stay busy. I will be eligible to receive SS in 3 more years, at which time I hope to do what you guys are doing..travel!! I agree that it makes perfect sense to stay put at one location for an extended period of time, given the cost of airfare!

Curious about what you would suggest doing with your base home in the United States while you are traveling. Would you rent out your home while you are abroad? Or do you just shut everything down? Our home is almost paid off, but there are still expenses to pay like insurance and taxes. Flex living sounds right up my alley. We have extensively researched, residential visas and you are correct, bureaucratic nightmare. Plus, our families would be much more receptive to the idea of us just traveling, but coming back. Our parents are elderly and they are worried that they will never see us again if we move abroad.

This is exactly what I want to do/planning on doing! Right now it is hard to be away from work for more than a week or two. (Both my husband and I are self employed business owners/professionals) In fact we just took our first 2 week trip ever to Croatia and I cant tell you how much the extra few days made to our enjoyment. My main reason to retire is so I can take longer trips and try to really engage in the culture. I have no interest in owning another home (here in the states or abroad) and I would prefer to explore different areas/countries while we are still healthy and able to do so. My husband is not interested in extensive trips or living out of a suitcase but I think I can convince him for 2-3 months twice a year...and maybe getting those last min specials when available. Love your approach and I'm thinking it makes sense for me. I would think living 3 months in one country would also give you some time to rest up too. In the past when I would travel abroad with family for 2 weeks or less, I was always fighting jet lag and everyday just beat from all that we felt like we had to cover each day. Flex Pat (think you should trade mark this word lol) allows you to relax and be present in the moment instead of worrying everyday about the schedule and stressing over whether you covered it and got your moneys worth.

This so appeals to me as I'm not ready to pack up and leave the U.S. permanently, and it seems that was the focus of so many YT videos from people fed up with the states. I love the idea of immersive slow travel and flexibility to have the best of both worlds. I'm getting ready to rent out my home and travel over the next year doing exactly what you recommend - 3 months at each location. Thanks for sharing!

This seems like a good way to get a realistic idea of what it would be like to live in several different countries before permanently moving to one. This also can be combined with medical tourism so that you can be treated or recover over several months in the same location instead of having to return home right after the procedure.

@@RetirementTravelers I am a bit of a slave to my everchanging life phases. At first it was world capitals, museums, architecture and local foods. Can’t remember a capital that I didn’t like, other than Rabat in Morocco. After a few years I went on a somewhat more adventurous slant. Riding a motorbike down the western coast of India and then up the eastern coast. Trekking in Nepal for months. Crossing Argentina on a motorbike. Night diving in Thailand. But with age I have mellowed out a bit. Now my new favorites are coffee houses and pubs in Czechia, Hungary, Greece, Thailand, and Vietnam. I now spend one to three months in each country and could never quite get up to your speed with weekly moves . Tried it your way last fall in Eastern Europe for a couple of months and realized it was a bit too fast for me. I guess I am just a crawler, not a runner. :)). Cheers.

We've been waiting to start this. We're both retired, and the only thing holding us back has been our aged dog. We'd love to travel with her, but besides the extra complications, there's a ton of extra gear involved in bringing a dog on a roving retirement. (Her crate, dishes, food, treats, leashes, grooming gear, doggie bed, toys, medicines, official paperwork, etc. Well, we finally decided we've waited long enough. When our lease is up, we're taking her with us, we'll just figure it out. Yes, it'll be harder, but we're not getting any younger and the window of opportunity is going to close if we wait too long.

Love this video. Learn a new word today, ‘Flexpat’. We will called ourselves ‘Grey nomad flexpats’ from now on. 😂 My wife and I are doing something similar but on a smaller scale. As Aussies, we love being at home in Melbourne in Autumn but the rest of the time, we travel. I like the idea that we live like a ‘resident’ in a country. Much cheaper rent wise, slower pace and increased enjoyment. I like your thinking. I noticed that we were spending less while travelling overseas than in Melbourne. Amazing way to save money!

Questions: 1) What do you do about medical care? I wouldn't want to pay for Medicare if I'm not in the US most of the year, and every country you visit will have a different medical care system - how do you handle that? 2) Do you stay in short term housing when you are in the US too? A long-term lease would mean paying double for housing, at least where I live (leases here typically don't allow subletting), so would be prohibitively epensive.

Great video and great advice. We are retirement travellers and have some extra suggestions. If you like animals look at house sitting, it’s free in return for looking after their house and dog or cat. House sits can be found for longer times like a month or more. The UK is particularly short of sitters and you could house sit there for the entire 3 months moving from sit to sit. We have just completed a house sit of 5 weeks in Oslo. The other Possiblity is monthly AirBnb. It’s surprising how low long term stays can be. Btw we have nearly completed 8 months away from home in New Zealand, going home for summer!

Hello from Ouray, Colorado! New subscriber here from a few days ago. So far, I had been watching your videos on full time world travels. However,I just came upon this one and it strikes a good chord! We are mid 50s and live in a resort town up in the mountains. Having endured some medical challenges over the last years (all mobility oriented), I can see the benefits of getting out before the mobility departs us (or any other aspect of health deterioration). We are preparing to head down to Arizona to look at some warmer climate living options. But, we also struggle, in thought, as the area we live in is incredibly nice in the summer time. So…a concept such as this video is a great potential option! I could easily consider snowbird flex patting. But, there are soooo many places in the world that are awesome in the summer too. So….I could see starting as a winter time flex patter, and then maybe expand it to include some summer ventures too. Safe travels!
