Namakaram, I feel there is a gap in understanding. Vedas are not teaching people to live selfish lives but yes, how use various tools and tricks to come out of difficult situations in life. Moreover, pursuing success... there is nothing wrong in it. I have huge respect for you but please don't misibterpret. Don't forget... In the end of scriptures it is written neti-neti... Not just this-Not just this... this gives out a clear message that merely reading the scriptures is not enough. There is more to spirituality and that can be achieved (including the correct interpretation of the Scriptures) only through practical knowledge that is Brahmgyan given by a Perfect Guru.

I think agnihotra etc was among the normal activities of the society in shankaracharya's time.. they didn't have to be present at office at 9.30. and going to a job is also to get material success right? So the rituals are not the only materialistic aspect in society. We are fully materialistic now in 2022
