Make your Money last forever. If you invest it properly, passively, you never need to touch the principal, only touch the growth. In fact, it's a rule that you can never touch the principal. This is the cornerstone of financial independence and retiring early (FIRE). If you withdraw approximately 4% per year from your portfolio ($40,000 per year inflation adjusted on a Million dollar portfolio) you will NEVER need to deplete the principal. In fact, in 99.9% of cases your principal will grow with inflation. So, in year 2 you'll have your $40,000 withdrawal and $1,020,000 balance and it'll grow over time with inflation. The trinity study confirmed this fact and it is known as the 4% safe withdrawal rate (SWR) or the 4% rule for short.

I believe the retirement crisis will get even worse. Many struggle to save due to low wages, rising prices, and exorbitant rents. With homeownership becoming unattainable for middle-class Americans, they may not have a home to rely on for retirement either.

...and that can be a part of someone's life on $40,000/year income. I use a coupon to hit up the keg to enjoy a fantastic steak dinner once and a while. I could also easily rent a lambo for a week and drive it all around...film some cool youtube videos. Truth be told, I've interviewed folks who have really nice cars and I've found that the novelty wears off quickly. So, if you want to maximize the impact of your dollar AND you enjoy fancy cars - rent them on occasion. Maybe for a weekend every few months. It'll cost you a lot less and it's attainable on $40,000/year withdrawn from your million dollar retirement portfolio :) Food for thought. I also personally enjoy a home cooked steak. IF I had to choose between steaks & lambos + working at a full time job OR occasional steak dinners & a regular car + NOT HAVING TO WORK EVER (FREEDOM OF an extra 50 hours per week)...It's a no-brainer. I'd take the freedom. I value my time and my freedom more than fancy shit. Thankfully I don't have to choose. I wouldn't be a wage slave for any amount of luxury...especially when there is no free time to enjoy it. Thanks again for following me on this journey and commenting.

@@fernandotorres8034 This is because you're living off the returns from investments and not touching the principal amount the $1M. The average return is 6% and up to 11% on really great years. So 2-5% is going back into the portfolio investment. The next year you will start with 2-6% higher principal so the 4% you take out will actually be more than the previous year. This 2-6% more will be needed as your $ will not go as far each year after the yearly inflation of about 3%. hope this helps and did not make it worse.

Great video. I'm age 53 and am a huge subscriber to all this, but what is missing is health care costs in your analysis. That's what hangs everyone up on a tight budget. Also long term care costs. perhaps a video addressing those things would be helpful? I never thought about those things in my 20's, but certainly do now as I run into more and more health issues and procedures. I'm a healthy non-smoking, distance runner including two full-marathons, just in case anyone's wondering.

XSlasherX Impressive that you’re interested in finance at 14. If you start following these guidelines at your age, you will have more money than you’ll ever know what to do with throughout your life. Time is truly money and that means a lot at your age. Start now, start small and chip away at it, $5, $10, whatever you can get, and pile it up. What the gent in the video is saying is to draw off the interest your money earns. He doesn’t mean to simply take $40k from the $1M each year, cutting down the $1M over time. In his example, if you have a base sum of $1M invested into any investment that can return 4% per year, you will earn $40k in interest every year. So at the end of the first year of 4% returns, you’ll now have $1,040,000. If you pay yourself that $40k, the base $1M remains untouched and can continue to earn interest in following years. Now you’re making $40k every year and not “working” for it or selling your time. The $1M is like an employee that is working for you, making you $40k every year. This gets even better if you have a larger sum of invested money and/or can earn more than 4%. Eventually you’ll get to a point where the return on your investments exceeds the money you need to live on. Then you become more or less financially Independant. This is why the rich get richer and the poor stay poor (regardless of what anti-capitalists or liberal politicians try to tell you). The opposite is true when you borrow money, or debt. Someone gives you money (for a house or car) and you pay them interest to have it. So if you borrow $30k to buy a car, that car winds up costing you $32k after interest is paid. Earn as much as you can now while you are young and invest it wisely. It will pay you back for many years and you will not have to worry about retirement. Try to keep your expenses low along the way and it happens even quicker.

Im 27 with around 60K savings. I've been buying stocks for a year but I'd like to get into real estate as it seems like a better and faster way to get passive income. I just don't know how to spot a good deal as it seems like anything out there on zillow or realtor are the leftovers nobody wanted. Any ideas on how to find a good multi family unit as I don't have access to MLS?

George Cole sometimes you have to make a deal into a good one through value add. For instance, I bought a single family at market value and converted it to a duplex and unlocked 50,000 in value net of costs. I then placed A tenants in & unlocked more value. Sometimes you have to create the deal. Sometimes the deal that looks bad at face value just needs to be negotiated harder (with the seller) or value added after it’s closed. I have some great wise Wealth episodes where I answer questions on this stuff.

Good video.. you can always work. I retired very early.. I get a monthly income for life.. but I still work and I'm under 40.. the thing is in the US, the more and longer you work, the more you receive from social security.. if it's still around.

Michael delves into the history of debt and its role in our ever-changing economic structure. He references classical economists like Smith, Mills, Ricardo, and Marx, with their concept of economic rent as unearned income. They believed that industrial capitalism would eliminate the entire legacy of feudalism and dissolve the landlord class by taxing away rent or nationalizing the land. Since most governments were subsidizing education and health care, it seemed counterproductive to allow privatization of health, education, or land rent monopolies. They also saw ‘credit’ as a public utility, expecting banks to lend for socially worthwhile and productive purposes. Ultimately, instead of banking being industrialized, industry was financialized.
