Dude, you are literally a life saver (and kayak saver)! I just installed a roof rack with these kayak racks 2 hours before leaving for a camping trip. We got 10 minutes down the road and it was pouring rain, I was going 20 mph on the highway with 30 mph gusts of wind coming directly at the car. It wasn’t long before the car and roof started to vibrate tremendously. We pulled over in the pouring rain and realized the kayaks had shifted and lifted off of the rack. We frantically started watching videos on KZbin and came across this video. After watching your video I am happy to report the kayaks are as solid as a rock. We are on the road again safe and sound, thanks again for the awesome tutorial!!

So glad to see your trick with the straps. I can’t tell you how many times I have struggled to get the straps in the clips on the hook. Now I have the new and cheaper Malone j hooks for my new car and this trick is extremely helpful. TY

That was the best video I've seen yet well explained good close up pics on how the strap works... excellent.....I just wished u had a video on the Yakima which is a little different it doesn't have that nice place u can put strap thru at the bottom by the cross bar right after u looped under the cross bar and goes thru bottom of jbar

My suggestion would be to also wrap the strap around the load bar on the inside of the j-hook and not just the outside as suggested in the video. Best to have the strap around the load bar on both sides of the kayak.

Under the load bar is VERY important. The Yakima cradles will break if you just tie to the cradles.

Great video. Wish you zoomed in on the strap. Mine scratch and could break the window. Where did you get the straps?

You strapped this boat incorrectly. There is another slot in the Malone Downloader that is closer to the boat. Your strap tail goes through that slot, around the cross bars, and then through the slot on the loading ramp and to the buckle. The way you did it creates a gap between the boat and the strap. That gap can cause a holding failure.

Mine doesnt look the same but is a malone that holds two kayaks. If i dont have that same spot youre talking about and mine ties down closer to his directions, am i still safe? It doesnt feeeeel like its gonna go anywhere. Im just uneasy because im just not a rigger, you know what i mean? Thanks in advance

@@miguelmarquez4192 The double loader you have does not have a loading ramp or slots so you don't have this problem.

I did a similar tie and drove on highway in the rain. My kayak dislodged but didn't fall off luckily. It's important there not be so much space between the strap and the kayak toward the bottom -or you risk it coming loose... my experience at least.

aand the bow and stern need to be secured by rope to the cars front & rear, as per instructions. Just bought one and installing on my new Yakima racks tomorrow!!

How to put a 28kg 5.18m kayak on to the holders on your own? On an suv, I’m female, not having much luck online. Cos I can’t lift it like a guy can. Thanks

I always get confused on which way u have to feed tie straps at the metal buckle part....I noticed that u didn't tie down the front and rear of the kayak where the tie downs go over the engine and the trunk of (suv)car alot of people I see locally don't do it either wondering if really necessary
@sherpersinc2 жыл бұрын
You can add in the ties to the hood or the rear of the car for extra stability on longer trips. If you aren't traveling for prolonged periods of time, using just the straps on the downloaders is plenty. It is always good to check them and tighten them periodically when you stop at a gas station, etc.

Front and rear tie-downs are absolutely necessary. If you slam on your brakes, the kayak can shift forward. The other reason is wind drag. While driving, your kayak is having to cut through the wind since it sits high and the wind grabs your kayak at your cockpit causing the straps to possibly loosen. A strong gust could take your kayak off your vehicle and hit another vehicle for which you would be at fault. I use a cockpit cover made specifically for my cockpit size to reduce drag and prevent the cockpit from filling with rain water during downpours and bad storms. When a kayak fills with water while on your vehicle, it can warp the kayak, make it harder to get your kayak down because of the extra weight (8lbs. per gal.), and can possible damage your roof.

@sherpersinc6 жыл бұрын
Hi Wayne! A Hobie Outback will probably be a little big for this carrier. We do sell the Malone Mega Wing Kayak Carrier that tends to work really well for these larger kayaks and fishing kayaks. Here is where you can find more info on that particular carrier: sherpers.com/malone-megawing-sot-large-fishing-kayak-wing-carrier/

For the j rack, when it’s tight on top of the car, does it move a little when you snug/jiggle on it?
@marcepan81423 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Why put a kayak aside? rather than just putting it upside down. The water will not get there and the wind will not interfere.
@billhaidei346 Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure it comes down to a space saving thing & allowing a pair of J-racks to be mounted. Great for couples.

@cml14015 жыл бұрын
Why when the clip is fitted to the rear of the j bar, would you not use it. Companies spend thousands on R&D to make things more secure, efficient and usable. I can’t understand why you wouldn’t bother using it.
@MsCurrion3 жыл бұрын
I don't get this either, especially when he then has to climb on the car to get the strap back to the top of the J. Just seems sloppy.

This is recommended, but not necessary. A bow and stern line come with the downloader, and in our two pack we include a more deluxe/easier to use version of these called the speedlines.

NEVER use the black plastic strap guides on the top bar. They fail and the strap comes completely off the boat. Always go around the bar itself. I’m glad I learned this by tightening the strap a little too much and the plastic guide and strap came flying off. The guide is 1. Not solid ring around the bar and 2. PLASTIC. Who thought plastic would actually stand up to any kind of force in an accident or wind speed when it can’t handle some pressure when pulling on the cam buckle?🤦♀️
