This is how I load and transport my kayak. I have an Old Town Sportsman PDL 120, and it is roughly 180-200 lbs with my gear (pretty heavy)…. 12 feet long x 3 feet wide..

Here in Florida I do a similar set up but I use two ratchet straps. I like it nice and tight for highway driving. I have one around the back by the rudder and the second through side handles. Then I use rope to tie other items at the top of the truck bed.

This was super helpful. I just picked up my old town sportsman pdl 106. But drive a Tacoma and I used to have a smaller and more light weight kayak that I would leave in the bed of the truck and raise the tailgate up and tie it down but it makes it pretty hard to do it with this larger kayak plus the extra weight .

Not necessarily overkill, but your strap method makes for a lot of walking. Im sure this isn’t an earth shattering idea but id be figuring out something simpler! I like the right off the cart into the bed idea though. Good stuff.

I’d suggest picking up a harbor freight bed extender that goes into your receiver hitch. Especially with a 12ft kayak and a 5.5ft short bed.

I have one but don’t use it anymore. I haven’t had any issues with the way I’ve been doing it but I would agree that it would help someone with a 5.5 ft bed. I believe I have a 6.5 ft bed. Thanks for your comment. 👍

How long is your bed of your truck? I see a lot of guys using those bed extenders but even with my 5.6ft bed it doesn't really seem necessary outside of peace of mind or maybe ease of loading.
@WannaFishAllDay
@WannaFishAllDay 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott! Thanks for your comment. My truck bed is 6.5' long. I do have a truck extender but it sits in my garage as a clothes rack now.. IMO, it's unnecessary even for your 5.6' bed unless your kayak is a lot longer than my 12' OT. A couple CAM straps is more than enough to secure it safely and it’s easier for me to load/unload without the extender. Looking back at a younger me, I could've used that extra $100+ to buy more "on the water" gear lol. For added peace of mind, you could always use more straps. Anyhow, hope this helps! I would appreciate it if you could subscribe for more new content coming soon.. Cheers buddy!

@WannaFishAllDay
@WannaFishAllDay 6 ай бұрын
No bed extender needed. I have used my 6.5 ft bed for a PDL 120 and AutoPilot 120 for a few years without any issues including long distances to different states. I would recommend investing in quality cam straps.

Do you ever notice any rudder wiggling on highway trips? Do you ever load it rudder first to prevent? Going to be getting a 120PDL and have 6foot bed (8 with tailgate down). Wasn't sure if I should just get an extender or not
@WannaFishAllDay
@WannaFishAllDay 8 ай бұрын
I haven’t checked about the rudder wiggling but a little flex is fine. I would upgrade to the navarre kayak fishing bolt. It makes steering so much easier. I also think you should be fine with a 6ft bed just as long as you strap it down properly.

I wouldn’t think so. My PDL 120 fits perfectly in my 6.5 ft bed. I use 3 straps and it’s not budging. I’ve been on 4+ hours drives to tournaments this way. I also transport my AP120 the same way and even leave my blackpak pro attached in the tankwell.

That's foolish you don't know anything about securing cargo. If anyone is reading this DO NOT secure a load in this manner it is not effective. Using individual straps for both sides is the most secure way to ensure there is no lateral movement of your kayak.
