Pro tip: The d-lock doesn't have to go through the frame, its enough if you lock the rear wheel somewhere inside the rear triangle. You will not be able to remove the rear wheel, because you would need to pull the d-lock and anything its attached to through between the two rear triangles. You would need to cut the wheel to free the frame. Also what you lock it onto should be at least as strong as the lock. Avoid cast iron railings for example.

Some tactics: 0. Use motorcycle locks (heavier, beefier, not priced for the "boutique" bicyclist. : ) 1. Put the U-lock through a frame "triangle (not where the frame can be disassembled.). 2. Route the cables up high, away from the ground (so there's no leverage for a cutting tool to be braced against the ground. 3. Route a cable through the chain ring. 4. Personal trick: A luggage alarm or motorcycle rotor lock (motion activated siren) which can be clamped onto a brake rotor or through the locks. 5. Choose a U-lock that remains attached to the frame in a carrier with a design that inhibits cutting or sawing. Also, I've just read about an internally pressurized stink/stain "skunk bomb" deterrent built into some u-bolt bike locks.
@leifforsstrom8 жыл бұрын
Good thinking. In Courts example you can take the frame and leave the swingarm and saddle with the wheels pretty noiseless. But you can always put your bike next to an more expensive bike with a bad lock? How strong are the Wires? How much (weight and space) do you want to carry with you just for locking the bike? And time to do lock/unlock. And yet your bike or parts get stolen. In sweden the burglars cuts the bikerack and deal with the locks at quieter place later. :-(

A thief who knows what he is doing can get this bike in under a minute. The tools to get through these locks can be bought for less money than the locks themselves. Harbor Freight sells gigantic bolt cutters and battery operated grinders quite cheap.

tarstarkusz it's still good to try and make it as much of a ball ache as possible and they will hopefully move on to an easier score. But of course, if someone's determined enough, they will take that bike. "Challenge accepted" :(
@tarstarkusz7 жыл бұрын
+bin.... When you buy a lock, you are really trying to get the thief to go after a bike other than yours. You are trying to make your particular bike a less viable target. The problem is this only works with like bicycles. If some thief sees a $5k e-bike, you are no longer just trying to make your bike less desirable to the criminal, you are actually trying to keep a thief at bay. They make a "club" for bikes that you can lock onto your wheels. The more mass you can put into the various locks the better. Also, you should try to lock your bike in such a way that it would be difficult to break the lock without damaging the bike.

Bollocks mate, did that in London, the kryptonite cable is useless can be cut with vine scissors. However the best you can do is double D locks or get a single strong D lock like yours and upgrade your bike with unique pitlocks, rear and front tyre, saddle and even the fork or handle bar can be secured with one unique pitlock. If they manage to steal it if they need to change a tyre or saddle , they will need to destroy most of the bike . The pitlock cost you around 65£ or 50ish$ , my opinion, more efficient, since I upgraded my bicycle, got no problems so far.

Very easy to steal the front quick release through axel... its best to bring duct tape for all the easy to steal parts and tape things safe. You don't lock it up in public, it's as simple as that. Always try and take it with you into shops and if the shop kicks you out, well, they're losing a potential customer; as long as you don't disrupt other people's shopping, I can't see there being a problem. I lost a £350 bike the other day (had 2 combination locks on it, secured in the optimum positions) and now regret not taking it with me wherever I went that day. So please don't lock your expensive bikes outside unless you absolutely have to and always use D locks if you do.
@theresabu30002 жыл бұрын
There are other options to secure your saddle and wheels - like pinhead or abus nutfix. Replacing the quick release makes it more difficult - the abus one you have to lay your bike on the ground to change it - only good if you're the only one who uses it and don't need to remove it for transport. The U lock is better trough your frame triangle. Because if you snipped your cables, removed the rear wheel, a thief could take everything. Only really necessary in big cities. I would prefer separate locks - more hassle for you, but also for a thief. Maybe a short chain link lock (60 - 80cm) for rear wheel, frame and bicycle rack. And your U-Lock for frame and front wheel. Seat maybe with a short cable lock to your frame. From Abus you can get locks that have the same key.
@vuaeco6 жыл бұрын
This lock works for a $100 Walmart bike. It doesn't work for a $6000 ebike. No lock works for a bike of that value. Just walk it in with you. If you're going shopping in a store, most places wouldn't mind. If they refuse, just ask to lock the bike inside the store. That way you can keep an eye on the bike. There's much less chance your bike would get stolen inside a store because there are security cameras, more people walking around, and you're also around to keep an eye on it. No bike thieves would run an angle grinder inside a store trying to cut your lock when there are security cameras and people walking around.

Perhaps a 2 or 3 part series due to the amount of depth it could be. One of the first things I noticed is that locking requirements are rated. IE if you live in say NY. The last thing I noted was... buy a good U lock that locks on both ends. Anyway I think you would do the topic a great service. Good vids and thanks. Darryl from Victoria, BC.

Nice effort. This may work in some very white collar areas but not in the real world or any urban environment. I dont want to be rude, and I hope your bike never gets stolen but this is bad advice. 1. Cable locks are useless. It is not common for thieves to walk around with bolt cutters in their bag daily. They would get through both cables in 3 seconds. 2. It would only take 3 seconds because you secured one cable to another cable so they only have to cut one to get your front wheel and seat. At least run both cables to the u-lock. 3. For a $6K bike you need a high end u-lock, and blackburn is not it. Spend the extra $40 and get a Kryptonite, Abus, or Sigtuna that has at least a 15mm thick hardened shackle.

Would be a bit more bulky but I believe there are cables that are deliberately too wide for a set of bolt cutters to fit over. Because those are stranded they will be "chewy" and take some time to cut through but if you cant get cutters over it that is another level of deterrent right there. Another thing you can do to discourage component theft is remove all that quick disconnect and adjust stuff with cams and levers and put nuts and bolts in their place. Your setup looks pretty good. I hope you keep your bike. Someone stole mine long ago when I used just a chain and cheap padlock.

The problem with this method is that if the U lock is defeated the other two cables just come off without any problem. This is the problem of serially dependent locking. Intsead, you want to secure the same items on the bike using independent locking methods. The more diverse the method the better it is because the thief would need many different tools to defeat them all. Choose strong locks that require totally different method to break and lock all detachable parts of the bike to the frame or an immovable object such as bike lock stand.

They got these caps you can put in your allen bolts to seal off the hole so it can't be removed unless you have the specific key for those bolt locks

Here's a tip. Put your u-lock (lock) as high up as possible or as tight to the bike and wherever you are locking it as you can. All someone needs are a standard size of heavy duty cable cutters, the ground, and a few hundred pounds of force to cut through that set-up in minutes. If you can put your u-lock up higher and eliminate the leverage a thief would get from using the ground, or if they are unable to pinch the lock with the cutters, most people cannot easily cut through u-locks. If anything, it may save your bike or at the very least buy you time. Actually the higher up you can go, the more the thief struggles due to the cutting angle and lack of strength. Another tip, put a sign up. The best security against theft are other people and good Samaritans, but the bystander effect is real. Ask people to report thefts, and they actually do, or even better, they'll come get you, get a description and a direction, or even follow or confront a thief.

Van Moof has had tracking on their bikes for ages.built-in. You have to destroy the bike to get it out at which point there’s no resale value.

To everyone, I also recommend buying a cheap bike alarm on Amazon for like $12 - $15 and fitting it under the bike seat.

How long are the cables and can you please put links to the locks and them

Both wheels are secured? You gotta be kidding! Only the rear wheel is secured. Cable locks are really just an invitation to "Steal me!" They can be cut with pliers in seconds.

I secure my accessories with electrical tape. That stuff is hard to get off. I attached a strong metal bar to my seat and taped it to the bike frame. I guarantee cutting through electrical tape is harder than cutting a cable lock without damaging the part or taking a long time to remove, but I warn you only use it on parts you aren't planning to remove for a long time.
