I really love the way you test the locks in your videos! It would be really interesting if you could compare the Kryptonite Evolution Integrated Chain with the Abus Grabit CityChain or something comparable.

I really like how you consider such things as seen at 2:46 and tests different methods, some of which are often forgotten or overseen. :) 6:25 I also have the same thought and its a bit sad, because ART rated it with 4/5 stars, while similar strong u-locks with sold secure pedal cycle diamond have 3/5 stars for example the Abus Granit 540!

Use 2 Krytonite locks and only make brief stops at convenience stores and gas stations, not grocery shopping. If it's possible park in the line of sight. If there's a shady character with battery powered angle grinder hanging around, just go to a different store.

Terrifying how quickly that grinder made several cuts in mere seconds… was gonna buy the kryptonite m18 but why bother paying £100 for a lock when they can be cut in 30 seconds. My £1500 e-bike wouldn’t last 1 hour in Manchester. Thanks for testing.

I think it's a shame you didn't answer some important questions. For example, how hard and resistant is the metal against a saw? What is the metal thickness of the body? What is the internal mechanism and is it made of plastic? These are important questions to understand the quality of the product.
@bikelockwiki
@bikelockwiki 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, all noted and will add the requested details to answer these questions tomorrow. Against a hack saw, not much would happen to either of these locks. We’ve conducted HSS tests in many of our videos, but most case hardened locks will resist, and it makes for relatively boring content so in this video I tried to some different test methods. Adding hardness measurements is something we plan on doing, but currently we don’t have the funding to afford a tabletop Rockwell hardness tester. I’ll add internal mech measurements tomorrow. Thanks again for watching, and for your critique, I continuously try to improve quality, helpfulness and entertainment value of our videos.

@@bikelockwiki Thanks for taking it in stride. This is of course constructive criticism, not personal. I talked about the saw test as a test for the level of hardness and quality of the metal. Good to hear that you are interested in looking into this more in depth in the future. The thing is that in Chinese locks sometimes cheap, weak and thin metal is used for different parts of the lock, and this is something you need to know. Appreciate your content and input.

@@bikelockwiki Sometimes the cylinder is not of good quality, which will create problems. Drilling can also be a problem.
@bikelockwiki
@bikelockwiki 7 ай бұрын
Yep, after working in the industry for many years I understand all of the above, and yes some locking mechanisms are weaker than others. However drilling out a cylinder is not a popular method of attack, but we do include this in some of our videos. The Elite is a Sold Secure Diamond rated lock, and is a similar build to the OnGuard Pitbull, a very reliable lock.

How about a lock picking test?
@bikelockwiki
@bikelockwiki 3 ай бұрын
While some KZbinrs are picking locks open in under 10 seconds, in reality thieves aren't picking locks like these on the street, so we stick to destructive testing that's mostly similar to attack methods thieves use.

Interesting video. Here it doesn't matter but in cases where the 42" bolt cutters do cut a lock I'm always curious if say a 24" one does as I think more thieves are using shorter ones that fit in a duffle bag or backpack. A lock could pass say a 24" cutter attack but not a longer tool and I'd still be interested in that lock for some bikes in some scenarios. Yeah, people could use folding cutters or cheater pipes or huge bolt cutters but some resistance to more common bolt cutters is still noteworthy below this price point, as tested. I mean there are logical categories like Common bolt cutters, huge bolt cutters, and grinders where you definitely see different price classes and decide if you want to pay for that extra protection based on crime in your area and the price of your bike. So this test is fine but a lot of locks that would fail with those large bolt cutters still have their place.
@bikelockwiki
@bikelockwiki 4 ай бұрын
Completely agree with your point of view. When we successfully crop a lock with the 42” cutters we then subject it to 24” cutters to better understand its limitations. However as both were uncroppable here, we didn’t need to test against 24” :) Thanks for watching

It is possible maybe in our lifetimes that we could see a lock capable of enduring an attack for over an hour but as for an impervious grinder proof lock i very much doubt it. Not in our lifetime anyway, never doubt what humans are capable of though. Remember, people used to say man would NEVER fly lol. According to the bike lock wiki website the presenter in this video personally uses the Litelok X1 which is an impressive lock and can withstand at least ONE disc from a grinder, these locks sort of make locks like the kryptonite forgetaboutit locks invalid now

@@bluewave7120 Yeah the only problem with the X3 is it's bloody expensive lol. X1 can at least on average take two discs to the one side of the shackle depending on how powerful the angle grinder is. They have to still make TWO cuts to both shackles because it's double locked on both sides
