How to "Lock" any Honda ATV Front Differential (pt.2)

Engineer here, The reason this works with a normal open diff is because when the one tire is spinning and one stopped, the spinning tire is going twice the speed that the carrier (in the diff) is spinning. The spinning tire can be thought of as being in a higher gear than the one not, and when you hit the brakes though the same braking force is seen at each wheel, the lower gear ratio that the stationary tire is seeing is able to overcome the brake easier than the spinning tire, and that extra force is given to the stationary tire. Notice how one front is spinning faster than the other once he finnaly climbs the car?

It will only work momentarily on a open diff but if you do this to the Honda or any other torsen diff it will keep the torque transfer as long as there is a difference to keep the diff activated. Difference in wheel speed is not needed but will probably be an effect of the difference in grip.

Thanks for the video. This method definitely works. I have used it for years. Often when you are stuck, you just need to move a foot or so to change the whole scenario. It obviously doesn't work every time. Sometimes, you are just STUCK.

Your applying the front break to distribute the torque to both front tires. That what we do in jeeps with front or rear limited slip. Nice demo man!

This only work if you have a front diff with torque activated diff brake. Most 2000 -> Hondas have this. Good demonstration!

This works with any open diff, as long as both brakes are in similar working condition.

@@deakentrask1054 no it doesn’t, applying brakes to an open diff will not transfer power to a wheel. If you apply braking to the spinning wheel only, that will work.
