Still can't shake my paranoia. In my head, as soon as I lock my bike up and it leaves my sight, thieves arrive immediately with bolt cutters and a blow torch. Meanwhile all passers-by think nothing of it.

In my city, bike thefts are few and far in between... I do not live in one of these "bike towns" or "bike countries" such as San Francisco or Belgium. A study did reveal that most bike thieves in my city were either homeless people or drug addicts (bikes were set up to be stolen).. the bikes were not locked up either, so when they had a flat on their bikes, they simply look for another bike, take the wheel needed and put it on their bike because they do not have the money to change the flat. Locked bikes on the other hand, were not even looked at by the thieves. So a lock will stop most thieves (homeless or druggies), but lucky for me there aren't many "bike thieves" who do it for a living.... in my city anyhow. I still have paranoia at times as well, lol.

I take my front wheel with me anyhow, the fear is still there, lol. But I would imagine it would be much more difficult to take a bike with only one wheel (with the other locked with the U-Lock as in the video), lol.

The moral of the story: carry 5 pounds worth of locks and chains with you at all times, become proficient at partially disassembling your ride on a daily basis, and get used to hauling seats, wheels, and other accessories on your person. Ugh.

Personally I think it's better to just leave any bike worth more than a few hundred at home if you're going to be leaving it out of your sight for more than about 30 seconds. Get a cheap old roughed up commuter or hardtail mountain bike and use that with a plain looking lock. Basically use a bike that looks as unappealing and worthless as possible if youre going somewhere you need to lock it up

Had to laugh at the comment about locking your bike up close to a police station. My Canadian son - a cop - locked his bike up at the bike compound at his local police station - it was stolen. That's right, some one actually stole a bike locked up at the police station.

I'm not convinced parking in a public spot will deter thieves too much. I once had to break into my own car (because I locked the keys in it...) and not a single passerby gave me a second look as I noodled about with coathanger wire trying to pry the lock. Apparently a guy in a hoodie trying to break into a car in a very public area isn't worth of anyones attention whatsoever.

The more we live in crowded spaces the more seeing things like that is less surprising and we are more unbothered by it. If someone saw you in a smaller town it would be looked at for sure. It's the odd mix really. Usually the busier areas are just to deter thiefs going there period. They are easier to track down. Even then you should always bring your bike indoors if you are going to be there a few hours.

This is all good advice. Another consideration is the "outrunning the bear" theory. You don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun your friend. When I'm riding around, I always try and park my bike next to something that looks nicer and more expensive than mine. A lock and a public location will deter anyone who is interested in stealing a bike to ride it down the road to the pub. Parking it next to a nicer bike will probably deter the more discerning thug, looking for something fancy he can cart off to the pawn shop. Not always possible, I guess, but something to think about.

The truth is that your bike will never be safe. At least not outdoors. If you put too many locks on it a thief with little knowledge of bikes will soon figure out its extremely valuable and go to great lenghts to steal it, possibly damaging the bike in the process. If the thief has some bike knowledge he will just steal your groupset, saddle, handlebars pedals etc. Do yourself a favor and buy a cheap bike that you can afford to lose and lock it properly if you need to lock it on the streets. Riding a carbon racer to town while carrying that bikes weight in chains and locks just to keep it (relatively) safe kind of defeats the purpose of a super light carbon racer.

Stephen Tuthill You think so? Well "nice bike" is not much of a description. I like most bikes, afterall. Especially old bikes. But if were talking new expensive sports bicycles then NOT leaving them locked outdoors in a secluded area (where a thief could disassemble or steal the bike without being bothered) shouldnt take away much from the experience. Riding such bikes around town with a big bag of locks is no way to do them justice.

Far more convenient than adding a cable lock for the wheels is to just replace the quick release axles with locking skewers. There are also special wheel locks for bikes having bolt on wheels. Also, having the seat always locked to the frame of the bike using a bicycle chain or cable lock is a worthwhile deterrent. Thieves do steal seats, believe me.

Interesting that us cyclists spend so much on getting the lightest bike, but the lighter (and more expensive) the bike, the heavier the lock. This has led me to the conclusion that every bike ends up weighing about the same! Cheaper heavier bike = lighter lock. Is anyone aware of any genuine way of still saving weight whilst offering good protection? Are there any really good bike locks that are relatively lightweight?
@alantaylor6691
@alantaylor6691 6 жыл бұрын
You're going to have to pay about 250 USD for a reasonably pick-proof lock, such as Abus 37/80 or Abus 37RK/80. The latter is really impossible for all but the best locksmiths to pick, and even then it would take a bit of time. Those locks are just over 2 lbs in weight. Then use a 14mm high quality chain as that can't be reasonably grinded through in less than a few minutes. Such a chain will cost another 250 USD on top of the lock. If you've got an expensive bike and are serious about it being thief proof, that's what's required. All the bike locks in this video can be picked or racked in seconds by an amateur picker, you've got these U-locks they tell you are hard to grind through and people think yay, but then the lock itself can be picked or racked by a bum. Use that lock and chain to lock the rear wheel and seattube to a solid post, then secure your front wheel to your downtube with something less expensive as you're just securing your front wheel there. Your front wheel will be secured so that it can't be taken away from the frame. It only needs to be a very short chain, enough to go around your rim and downtube at the shortest route. Just a short-ass thick chain or even a U-lock might suffice, depending on how expensive your front wheel is.

I've read it's a good idea to use both a cable lock and a U-lock together. The theory being each type requires a different type of tool to break and your average bike thief carries the tools to break one type of lock or the other, not both. If you use the bike to commute to work and can't store it indoors consider leaving the u-lock attached to the rack or whatever you lock your bike to when you leave to save some weight.

Good to see the bike-locking knowledge grow with the help of GCN. The idea of locking the extension cable is a good one. I usually like to loop my extension cable around my front wheel and then loop the cable in through itself, making it easy to lock the other loop to the d-lock and thus not requiring a second lock. It works just as well and saves some weight. As far as saddles and seat posts go, I have seen online that there are locking/anchoring cables specifically made to keep these precious pieces out of any thieving hands.

I've dropped a little solder into all the allen bolts.. It will stop your bike being stripped. You don't need to adjust anything while you're out. When you get your bike set it up and have done with it. If anything you'll just need to fix a flat tyre when out. Spanner's not needed. Any major work is done at home where you can simply reheat the small solder beads. And lock your bike to something in front of a shop window. And either change quick release or better still lock the front to the back wheel.

just wanted to express my take on this. I understand the logic for getting a shitty bike if you'll constantly be gone for more than a couple minutes, but that's like saying always get a crappy car to deter criminals. I personally have a fairly nice bike worth close to $1000 US Dollars and I refuse to let it sit at home just because of the chance a thief might take it. instead of getting crappy bikes I think bike companies should start implementing better securities (no quick release anything, micro gps) and cities should start doing more to promote bike usage (storages, heftier fines for bike thiefs)

GPS won't make a difference. Apple devices have those and police routinely refuse to do anything, also those are additional accessories and your own responsibility, no the manufacturers but you are right though. It's easy to get non-common types of screws even proprietary ones (better than common security heads) that are hard to remove or don't remove at all. Lot's of people with decent roadbikes do that all the time.

I recommend buying multiple locks. Bring the appropriate lock with you--a light one, or two heavy ones depending on where you'll be. My wheelset has decent resale value so when I'm in the city, I use chain lock from rear wheel to frame, and U lock from front wheel to frame, with cable extension to loop around the saddle. That still leaves the handlebars exposed, but I don't mind much.

I once had my MTB left out during a new year's eve, and some clown(s) came by and punctured the entire lot of bikes. Around a hundred bikes or so. But rather than just puncturing my bike, they stole all my quick-releases (saddle and both wheels). They however put my saddle back. So I needed a new inner tube, a tire and three quick-releases, resulting in an annoying £90 bill.

Had three bikes stolen one had a Kriptonite lock that was in a busy high street. If the police took bike theft as seriously as car theft it would help. My advice use a scruffy looking bike with a D lock for urban cycling and keep your good road bike for weekend and pleasure rides in the country where the thieves tend not to operate. Don't allow them(the thieves) to steal your enjoyment of cycling

I've had a Claud Butler racer and a Saracen MTB stolen in just 4 years. I catch anyone so much as giving my new Trek a shifty look I'll castrate them. What about the weight of those locks? If you spend $1000 more to get a lightweight carbon bike, but you have to buy a 5-7 lb bike lock because its more likely to get stolen, shouldn't you get a cheaper aluminum bike, and a 2 lb lock? Then if it does get stolen, it also doesn't cost so much... Also, for people that think a chain or U-lock will be able to stop someone for over 2 minutes, they are day dreaming. If your doing this in an alley, but need to be quite, you just wear a backpack with a oxyacetylene torch and run the hose through your shirt sleeve. That will slice/burn right through anything in about a minute, and much faster for small locks. Its very quite, and for me anyways, I'm always yanking seats, tires, handlebars, and all sorts of stuff off my bikes. Nobody ever questioned me about it, and yes I would use a grinder on some of them, all while they were locked. At least in America, we feel that if it doesn't directly affect us, its none of our business, its a pretty dumb idea. For those that wonder why I was using a grinder, some of my bikes have engines. Unfortunately I'm -1 since a couple weeks ago when it got stolen, thankfully it was a garbage China kit engine style, and it wasn't one of my other bikes that takes close to 90 hours to build, so I was pretty thankful they stole that one. It only takes an hour to assemble a new one. The worst part is I had a really nice comfy seat with massive springs for handling the roads around here, and they don't make that seat anymore. Oh humanity, it takes that .1% to spoil everything, otherwise we wouldn't need to lock them at all.

bluckingblucker You want a time lapse of 90+ hours? That would take like, 90 hours to film... I'm at college right now so I won't have time to make another one for a while. If your referring to speed, they are legally limited to 35 mph (so my newest one goes 33 mph, lots of acceleration though from a 50cc chainsaw engine @ over 9,000 rpm) without requiring a tag or insurance, which is a major plus since it won't cost $200 a year to tag and insure, and the only cost is repair and fuel, so pretty much nothing. A $20 bill should get you through the year if your not jumping things off-road and breaking things, but that's always fun to do to!

No commercial lock is secure, if a thief really wants the protected property. Your aim should be to make the bike a less easy target than the next bike. That's all you can do. Theives will even steal any removable part, such as wheels, seat, gears, chain, bars, etc. I knew someone who used three different good quality locks on his bike. When he returned, the locks were attached to the anchor points, and locked, but the bike was gone, never to be seen again, even though his postcode was marked on the frame.

In the Philippines, thieves here has gone too far and they have special cutters to cut through d-locks and bikechains, so what i do is that when i am going to eat or have tea on my favorite store i would simply ask politely if they can let my bike in (customer's right ;) ) and of course let us not worry about thieves just trying to get your bike while your inside an establishment we need to worry about thieves and bullies that would charge at you and steal your bike so when this comes atleast you have some pepper spray or a flashlight with a stun gun and they are pretty good and handy.

Some people commute to work 10-20miles and up to 40 miles round-trip. Some do it simply because they love it, some do it because they are training for a TT, Triathlon, or a race of some sort. I'm considering buying a Cervelo S5 used for an amazing deal, but I would use it for commuting and city riding from time to time and one of the biggest concerns when considering buying it is that it's so nice, I'll constantly fear someone is going to lift it and I'll be riding around with 2-3 locks paranoid. I wish society was more accommodating for cyclists.

I've taken my front wheel off (and placing a rag under the fork), placed it next to my rear wheel, then used a heavy chain lock to keep both wheels attached to the frame and a secure object. Never had my bike stolen yet, though it can suck trying to get that front wheel back in the disc caliper when it's 20 degrees Fahrenheit out.

With the increase and cheapness of portable power tools like a 4 1/2 inch grinder, locking a bike is useless. For example I lost my key to unlock it, phoned my mate who rode over with his angle grinder cut the lock in less than 30 seconds. If your bikes expensive, DON’T LEAVE IT UNATTENDED.

Of course a professional can get through the majority of locks with heavy duty tools, the whole point is to buy time. Personally I use 2 different types of lock (which will require different types of tools) for the frame and both tyres, as well as a cable from 1 lock to the saddle. The best protection you can get is bike insurance, just in case someone is willing to spend more than 10 seconds to steal your bike (which most opportunists aren't)

On a lot of those short metal fences like the one at about 03.25, you want to be sure to lock the bike to the LONG continuous rails. If the "long" rails are made of short lengths of rail tack-welded together, don't use it. Many of these kinds of fences are made using single tack-welds that can be broken with a single strike with a household hammer or handy brick or stone. That applies to all the short vertical posts of this kind of fence as well...most likely attached to the "long rail" with single tack-welds. Not very secure. If you're going to use a fence like this, make sure the welds are long and surround at least 2 sides of the square post or if round posts the weld should reinforce the weld with a bead covering at least a good third of the circumference of the post. Also watch out for fence kits that are simply bolted together by the homeowner. Sold in economy big box stores or found online they can be disassembled in less than a minute and your lock just slips over the now unsecured end of the post(s). And in yet other designs, the fence is made of quite light short sections simply staked into the earth. Perhaps 1 meter long the thief simply pulls the 1m fence section out of the ground and takes it with the bike.

Don't even consider leaving a "nice" bike locked up for any length of time -any part or all of it can be stolen. For commuting get a "town bike" (at the extreme end referred to in University towns as a bicycle shaped object;-) And it has to be a D-lock or better. One local university gets about one bike stolen per week, but in the last five years only one was with a D-lock. This advice from the UK's bike theft capital per head of population!

Recently brought a bike for my nephew we got the 2 ulocks and chain, but also removed the quick release for the wheels to a hex and got a cheap sensor (very loud) alarm from Amazon. But even with all that someone tried to nick the bike! Luckily the audience the alarm attracted made them abandon the idea but even that was a good minute or two later. Story - your gear is never gonna be theft proof just enough to irritate them to abandon or not try

Matthew Barnard Be careful with combination locks, they have a fault where as you don't need the combination to undo them, you just rotate the combination and pull, the lock gets loser when its on the correct number, to a passerby it would look like the thief is the owner of the bike just unlocking the bike.

I try to use two different types of lock which require two different types of tool to break. For instance a metal saw like the angle grinder can get through a D lock in seconds but can get messed up cutting a cable. a cable cutter will breeze through a cable but not a D lock. Even fitting a cloth sleeve (old glove, nylons, sock etc) over the D will require atleast a knife to cut it off before attacking with the angle grinder.

I personally use 2 u-locks...one for the frame and rear wheel and one for the front wheel (I have a long suspension travel front fork, so the u-lock is not capable of locking the frame and front wheel). I take accessories off, including the seat post and toss them in my backpack. I live in a relatively high bike theft area and have never had an issue. When possible, I take the bike inside with me, luckily this area is also cyclist friendly (btw, Walmart seems to have no issue with you riding your bike in their store...Redding, CA. Be respectful, drop your post and walk/ride, not pedal). When I am unable to lock the front independently, I take it off and lock it with the rear wheel/frame. The few moments it takes to do this is worth it to me...$1500 bike vs 30 seconds...no contest. Happy biking!

I use a heavyweight heavy duty steel d lock that requires a special designed key to open it the best method I know is to lock the frame and back wheel to the bike rack post take off your front wheel and seat post if its quick release and take off all accessories then no1 will touch or the secon method take a cheap backup bike for shopping and lock up the same way and you will have no problems but my recommendation is to buy a lock withvthe solid secure logo on it and insure your bike for £3 a month like I do under pin finance

1. Get bicycle insurance that also covers theft. 2. Get a Gps tracker and hide it somewhere on your bike. 3. Always have another bike you can use. 4. Lock your bike up next to bicycle(s) that have 1 weak lock or none at all. 5. Use 3 D/U locks.

The other thing I've done when locking my bike up for more than a few minutes is I remove the seat and stem and take them with me, especially if I have a backpack with me. It's pretty hard to ride a bike without a seat. When I have only had one lock with me a D-lock I've gone as far as pulling the front wheel off and locking it to the rear. People in NYC where I used to live would steal just a front wheel if they could.

In Vancouver Canada, there are full time bike thieves and it doesn't really matter what lock you use or how many you use; if your bike is worth alot, they will steal it, no matter where it is or how secure you feel it is. I'm not sure the actual stat, but at least 5 "stolen bike" ads go up on used sites daily. I know people who used the best/biggest chain locks on the market along with U locks for the front and rear tires and still had their bike stolen.
