Yep. The way entirely too many men have reacted to MeToo has been to take Carl Benjamin and Paul Elam as their idols, by retreating into a state of permanent adolescence, including in the way we look out in public. This has just enflammed the moral panic even further

Another gem! One of the first things I learned in the military, apart from listening twice as much as speaking, is that if you are on time….you’re LATE! I always strive to be at appointments 10-15 minutes early. Also, as I progressed in the ranks, I could not do my job unless my sailors were doing their jobs. Giving credit and recognition is supremely important. Park the ego and give credit where due.

my wife and i went to a nice waterfront resort this past weekend. when walking in wearing a sportcoat, i was immediately treated better by the staff. the person pouring my scotch was really generous. all this took was wearing a sportcoat and acting decently.

It’s not just what others think of you, but also what you think of yourself! So true! Growing older one has the tendency of being sloppy, ‘who cares’ sort of attitude. But as rightly said by you, if you dress well and treat others with respect, you will certainly be thought of as important. Also, as you grow older, people tend not to notice you wherever you go. But if you are dressed well and with some style, you get acknowledged. I’m taking care of these things and certainly find the difference. Thanks for your inspiring videos. ❤️❤️

Making my way back from Europe last year, I was dressed rather sharply (I've been following you for awhile now and have incorporated much of what you suggest to elevate my wardrobe/style). I was in the customs line at LAX. The customs agent said, literally, "Are you an actor? You look like an actor." This was in LA!! So yes, you can look a little more "important" by upping your wardrobe a bit.

For most of my life I had tried to be as casual as I could get away with. I became interested in dressing better about a year and a half ago and started following your channel and several others. I really wish I had done it sooner-just a slight elevation in style to chinos, polo or button down shirts, and better footwear. I can vouch for your statement that it makes a difference in how people look at me and treat me. I feel good.

I'm married for 32 years now, so I'm long out of the game. Thank God. With that said getting laid or meeting a woman for a relationship was always pretty darn easy. His advice about looking good is 100% true. Also, never wear a smart watch, ever! Buy a grown up watch. More importantly, show some confidence, and don't act desperate or dopy. Let the woman talk. Keep your mouth shut and listen to them. Act the part, be smooth, not too smooth though. Be a man. Simple.

As a kid, I helped out in my father's music store. Just before Christmas, this unshaven, rough looking, older guy came in. He was ignored by the regular sales staff. I was playing around with a newly arrived guitar model. The guy walked up to me and asked which I thought was the "best guitar in the store". I clarified what he meant by "best", and showed him two - one of which was a favourite of mine. He pulled out a roll of bills and peeled off a few LARGE ones. Turned out that he was some kind of oilfield engineer who'd been working in the bush, longer than anticipated, dealing with some serious issue. He'd just flown home from the site and hadn't had a chance to buy his son a Christmas present. Appearances aren't THAT important.

Hi from Brisbane Australia - Absolutely love your channel 100%. In my early sixties now but still always take pride in my appearance. I work out, swim regularly, and keep on top of my grooming, and yes dress maturely and masculinely. I'm always staggered by how few of us mature (And even younger) guys take real pride in our appearance, our manners, and our attitudes etc. Recently travelled to England via USA (5 x days in USA, 3 weeks in England) and it's amazing just how well I was treated whilst travelling by sporting a simple pair of dark blue 501's, classic navy blazer, brown chelsea boots, long sleeved ironed white oxford shirt "tucked in", brown belt, and my trusty stainless steel automatic Swiss watch!! My travel bag is a forty-year-old weathered brown leather messenger bag. May I, please, and thank you etc cost nothing to say, yet achieve so very much. "Manners maketh the man" is as relevant now as it was a hundred years ago. I KNOW that I would not have been given the same stellar service by all I met if I was rocking what most guys do, a la t-shirt, shorts, sneakers and sloppy nylon backpack slung over the shoulder. A simple, clean, classic, understated and masculine style will always trump the modern "activewear" casual look each and every single time. Add in good manners, and good grooming you simply can't fail. Please keep up the good work and thank you....

Recently, I bought a nice pair of chelsea boots and I wore them to a wellness check-up I had with my doctor the other day. Anyway, the process began when a female medical assistant asked me step-up on some scales and when I did, she said, "I like your boots." I want you to know that, John, because I bought that style of shoe according to your recommendation and you are right; women like chelsea boots even if she thought I was fat. LOL

For me, the idea of dressing well to make people believe that you are important is something misleading, especially for yourself, you are already important just because you are a human being, and you can add value to yourself, developing a good character and good values. Knowing how to "dress well" or learning how to "dress well" only adds a good presentation to your personality.

Spot on as always. And can I offer some more? 1. If you’ve got grey hair and are dying it, stop. Your grey signifies that you are someone with experience, someone “old enough” to be “important”. Your age isn’t a liability, middle aged guys, it’s a source of your power, so to speak. Don’t hide it. 2. Work on your fitness. No, you don’t need to be big or jacked. But if you’re in reasonable shape and not overweight, ESPECIALLY as you get older, you’re treated a little differently. By mid last year, my wife and I had got out of shape. Typical dad/mom bods. We got serious, took care of the issue, both dropped back down to what we weighed in high school. Immediate positive difference in how both of us are treated, regardless of how well we are dressed at the moment. And the effect seems multiplied when out together and dressed well.

Agree so much about punctuality. In a business setting it demonstrates that you’re organized and you know how to prioritize. In a social setting, it demonstrates the importance of the event and respect for others’ time. I know people who are consistently late for everything and it drives me nuts. Fortunately, my wife is like me, so we’re never on each other about not being ready or running late to some engagement.

Recommending punctuality goes against the title of the video. You say, when you are consistently late you are projecting the messaging your time is more important - which is exactly what you would want if you are trying to look more important. :) In my personal experience, it is expected that every meeting with C-level folks - they are always late. Being late, meetings getting cancelled, or moved at the last minute are the normal for the most important people. The less late they are it illustrates how important the other people are. I don't actually recommend purposely being late, but "professionalism" and "importance" are not the same thing.
@40OverFashion

True but relevant to culture. In South America if you show up at a girl's house on time they think that means you want to get married they expect you to be 20 minutes late or even an hour late. I have no idea why that is but it is. Perhaps they feel they are the leader and in control and the women look up to that or perhaps then he can be apologetic and smother her with adoration. Perhaps only a sociologist or s psychotherapist can figure this one out.

That kind of attitude is the reason why they’re still behind the rest of the world. Also, I don’t know what country you’re talking about, but that doesn’t apply to Brazil. I dated a couple Brazilian women in the US and they liked it when I was on time, not late.
