This makes a lot of sense. My family on my Mother's side are old money, and are basically low-key hoarders. We kept things FOREVER! I don't remember us ever replacing any furniture, appliances that still worked well, and would reuse things from dead relatives' houses like old travel trunks and crystal oil lamps for home decor. Mother even had the sofa expensively re-upholstered four times and rewired the lamps instead of just buying new ones.

I’d recommend we do this more. It’s sustainable. My grandparents were working class but WASPs and they definitely passed on a lot of furniture, china, vintage carpentry tools, and art, some of which they inherited from their parents.
@missylearned9821 Жыл бұрын
@@czardoniaI can so appreciate that. We live in such a throw away society and I’m guilty as charged because I participated in that way of life in my early marriage. But, about 20-25 years ago I realized I needed to buy quality, classic things and have them the rest of my life. What Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, Carolyn Bissette wore were classics 30-70 years ago and are still classics today. Same goes for furniture if you have an eye for it.

I am not Old Money, but I worked for an Old Money business for years. True Founding Family Old Money. They are often quite shabby. They don’t buy a lot of new stuff. Their decor is handed-down legacy rugs and furniture that is worn and patina’d. They look like their Grandma’s. Very adverse to change including fashion. They all wore white panties! Lol Only white. Their shoes were ‘sensible.’ Their skiwear was ancient. Their kids got new stuff, but if you look at the old photos of these people, they never dressed to stand out. Queen Elizabeth is quintessential Old Money, and her style has NEVER changed. She only wears the loud colors so that she can be spotted by “the people” in big crowds or at events. Off-duty she’s in ancient cardigans and traditional plaids. I love it. One name The Drummer has always called my lifelong look is “Whatever Plus A Cardigan“ which cracks me up.

@@drummerlovesbookworm9738 I have a B.A. in Economics and some graduate education in Accounting and Finance. We live in an economy where an exponentially increasing proportion of wealth is concentrated in the hands of a small elite minority. Even the 1% is petrified of being left in the dust by the 0.1%. And in a competitive economy, your RELATIVE financial position is more important than your ABSOLUTE financial position, because it may indicate where you're headed in the future. Since the security of the rich is never guaranteed, that's probably why this wealthy family still felt compelled to pinch pennies for their children's benefit.
@evelynzlon94922 жыл бұрын
@@drummerlovesbookworm9738 Hoarding and postponement of gratification is actually standard and necessary behavior amongst the elite. In many areas of life. That's one reason they continually outcompete the 99%. To give you an example, an acquaintance of mine's family once owned a fruit orchard. They were fairly prosperous until a major conglomerate in the same industry suddenly lowered their market prices to the point where the smaller orchards couldn't turn a profit. The conglomerate put them all out of business and acquired a greater oligopoly over the industry. These wealthy parents are probably just role modeling to condition their children to thrive amid these business practices.

*LOL* I am from an Old Money family. Congrats! You nailed it. However, if I may be so bold. The one thing you missed was hair. Please look at the pictures of "old money" hats. The women do not, in general, let their hair hang down carelessly. The hair is corralled into a chignon, ponytail, or tight bob. Princess Katherine gets away with her luscious locks - but you will notice usually under a fascinator. When wearing a wide-brimmed hat, she usually has her hair up or at least tucked behind her ears. Just a tiny detail that you might have missed. Love your channel, keep u the good work!

My brother married into a (not billionaires) trust fund family from New England. The great-grand father made an invention back in the 1920s or 1930s. 100 years later the descendants receive monies from the trust fund. They’ve always worked average jobs, been very low key in dress and attitudes, but traveled extensively with their 3 kids and still do now that they’re all in their late 20s. They didn’t even give cell phones to their 3 kids until they were 18. But, none of the 3 owed a single dollar for their college educations and are themselves now 3 great kids who I love. I can’t speak for their 20 or so cousins (who also get monies). But, because of the attitude of my brother and his wife, they didn’t show they had money to anyone around them especially living in a relatively small southern town. When the kids would complain that their friends had trucks, phones, boats, etc., (which we knew their parents bought through debt) I would just tell them some day soon they would understand and appreciate why their parents comported themselves the way they did. So, yes, I think real money whispers. …but other than on the tennis court, I don’t think you’d catch them dressed in tennis outfits. ;)

No stylish young woman would have been seen dead wearing Diana style clothes, only people who followed trends did, no matter how ugly the clothes. The Kennedy's are not old money. TBH, there is not much money there at all. JFK's dad made his money off bootlegging and prostitution- illegal activities. Due to the high number of children that he had, there wasn't that much money to leave to heirs. If Jackie Kennedy hadn't married Onassis and not had the final divorce before he died, she would have not had much to live on. Jackie Kennedy's step father was Hugh Auchincloss and he was old money. JFK had to have him call so he could be admitted into certain clubs since they were closed to him being a Kennedy. Most of old money- not all- eschews politics and live life not in the limelight. A good example was Bunny Mellon. The Mellon family is an old line family and she designed the rose garden for the Kennedy administration. After that administration. she only gave 1 interview for the rest of her life. In her estate she left her art collection estimated at 350 million to one of the Ivy league universities. The rest of her estate was for an undisclosed amount.

It would be great to get your updated take on this topic, now that quiet luxury has run its most recent course. Of course, its appeal will never completely fade, as it is anchored in the timelessness and indispensability of the aesthetic. However, the authenticity of the "old money" fantasy lifestyle imagery and scenography that drives the aspirational and acquisitional impulses among the masses, is a phenomena to be approached with discretion. As explained well in this segment from the Parisian Gentlemen true old money classes (at least here in the US with our depraved sense of true aristocracy) shun anything which is obviously trying to make a statement or draw attention. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJfZgKyolN2niaMsi=Zl_zpReLuDyK_dr_
