I remember touting the benefits of a capsule wardrobe to a friend at work years ago, and she was worried that if she adopted it, people would think she was a slob for wearing the same things all the time. I asked her when she last looked at me and thought I looked like a slob, and she was struck speechless. I would repeat outfits constantly, sometimes even more than once per week, and she had never noticed. No one pays that close attention to your outfits, and if they do, they'll usually just think you look put together.

But it's like " Therapy " for me, I put on beautiful music, and take my time with that particular task. I think the idea of pretending you're picking out your outfits for a vacation is brilliant! I've never thought of doing that, but, you're right, Jennifer. We do pick all our outfits ahead of time when we're travelling, so, why not do it at home? I think that would make a GREAT chic assignment for July or August. For four weeks, pretend to pick outfits for a "staycation", a week at a time! That would be a fun way to build the habit.♥️🇨🇦

Tip number one, getting all clothes (and shoes, etc.) ready in advance, has been my practice all my adult life, and it really simplifies feeling and looking put together. I don’t return anything to my closet that isn’t freshly washed and ironed or steamed, or needs repair, dry cleaning (rare) or polishing. (I have a small separate area in my bedroom where I hang things up that can be reworn without any work). I put up a clothesline in my tiny laundry area, and like to air clothes after steaming or ironing, with a fan on low, to make sure they’re dry before moving them to my closet.

I remember my coworker wore the same dress Monday and Friday of the same week. I thought, “wow that’s surprising!” And then when she did it again with another outfit I thought, “you know what? So what? She looks great. The outfit is cute. She’s great at what she does. It doesn’t take anything away from her”. (I, on the other hand, was constantly concerned about having “enough” clothes, what ppl thought of me, etc) It was eye-opening and refreshing! Now I’ve found your channel that supports this same idea and I’ve changed my outlook completely! I love your quality content! Thank you!

Along with steaming clothes, one tip I would like to leave here is keeping a bottle of cheap vodka on hand.... not for drinking! But rather I have a spray bottle of vodka with a few drops of essentials oils that I spray on clothes I rarely launder (blazers, dry-clean- only dresses) and shoes. When I take off those items, I can spray them down and hang them up to dry before they go in back in my closet. Steam also helps with odors, but I like using vodka (ethanol) before going back in the closet and steaming right before wear. Cheers!

Last year, i took my wardrobe down to 2 skirts and 4 blouses. 2 were house work blouses and 2 were go to town blouses. The skirts went either way, but one definitely worked better for cleaning out the hen house. I eventually made a third skirt and added a 4th. Now i am moving away from 2 pieces to dresses. The simplicity is amazing and i always feel prepared for whatever.

The only thing I don't agree with is keeping only the seasonal outfits visible. I have all my clothes out and you can't imagine how many more combinations I've created since I started doing it! I used my summer dress with a classical jacket, tights and boots in winter, a warm cashmere dress when it suddenly got cold in summer, not to mention my favourite jeans shorts with a jacket, tigths and loafers in autumn. I would never have done that if they had been stuck somewhere far away because it was not the season. I got this idea from a French stylist, by the way and it works!

My first apartment I was basically renting a utility room. 😂 It had a minuscule closet and I’d store my off season at my parents’ place. But it was so much work when I had too many clothes! Now with way fewer clothes it’s very easy. I’ll even box up something I’m not sure about to take it out later and give it another chance. I call it “quarantining my clothes.” The fewer clothes I have to chose from makes me such a happier dresser.

I did that years ago with digital photos, and it was so helpful to discover new outfits I love. I need to do it again though, especially since I have a hard time remembering different outfit combinations. I wouldn't mind having a Polaroid camera. It would be so helpful to have the photos right by my closet, or maybe even attached to the hangers of various pieces to nudge my memory. I tend to gravitate toward tried-and-true familiar outfits a little too much.

I live in a small apartment with no storage and I'm minimalistic and don't like a lot of furniture. All my clothes hang neatly in my closet, not crowded, and organized. My work clothes on the right, my nice clothes in the middle, and my winter clothes on the far left (which happens to be behind the bathroom door and often out of sight). I hang up everything because I don't want a dresser. But this system works so well for me. Being a minimalistic, my closet definitely isn't crowded. At least in PJs you're covered up!

Good advice. I set up my outfits for an entire week on Sunday. I hang each piece in order left to right Monday through Friday. If anything needs to be steamed or ironed, I do it then. It takes maybe 30 minutes. But I save all that time every morning because I already know what I am wearing. Of course, a plan may change or the weather may change, but on the whole this method has taken away the daily stress of preparing outfits. I also think that I try more combinations this way as I have more time to think it through. I also think I rotate through my clothes better by taking time to think them through.

The last tip was the most satisficing to hear because too often I have found myself being concerned about repeating an outfit. This idea of presenting yourself to others is stifling---and not just with clothes but ones house décor, your employment, your idea of frugality in your home and other things. I am not saying to be careless or to be a slob about your lifestyle but be grateful for what you do have, and present yourself to the best of your ability in all areas of your life. For many years, I have faithfully done 1-4 of which you have presented in this video because it was the easiest way for me to prepare for work the next day. #5 will be added to my routine. Thanks for the reminder to be grateful.

I like to store my out-of-season clothes on hangers in my extra closet, which I’m lucky to have. That way, I don’t have to re-iron everything when doing my seasonal switch-overs. Except for my wool and cashmere items, which I store in zippered bags to prevent moth damage. I just steam those when it’s time to get them out and hang them up. But they’re only hung up for about 4-5 winter months, then returned to the bags, where they rest and recover their shape. Cotton sweaters are fine for most of the year.

Thanks Jennifer, these tips certainly help. We have to remember, though, that clothes are not the only thing that make you presentable but clean hair, some makeup, maybe jewelry, and shoes are all part of the total picture. There was a woman I worked with at a global consulting firm who wore great clothes but would walk into work with her hair still wet and flip flops on her feet every morning. Obviously, she didn't allow herself much time to get ready every day.
@PrettyChocolateTrina2 жыл бұрын
Did she change her shoes once at her destination? Or did her hair? 🤔 I used to do this when I worked for a bank. I was in the compliance department and I had to be there earlier than most people. So I usually wore flip flops in the warmer months to work before changing into my shoes. I also fixed my hair a little better at work too. Usually a more presentable ponytail or combed it over or something to that effect. I came to work well before we were open to customers though.

Re. out of season garments, nothing better to store them away than those metallic locker rooms such as at the gym or in factories. They are so convenient when put up in your garage. They have got a railing to set your clothes on their hangers so these are practically ready to wear and won't get crushed and wrinkled into boxes, requiring lots of ironing and steaming when the season comes back. Also, an added bonus : those lockers are air-tight and you can put anti-moth devices inside, that wo'nt evaporate. Finally, those lockers can be found second-hand from thrift shops at low prices.

I’m so looking forward to watching this, unfortunately, I don’t have time today. I shall just have to wait until tomorrow to stop looking like I slept in a hedge!

The video suggestions right after this were 2 of yours and the Breakfast at Tiffany's movie iconic photo and I noticed how you had a similarly polished look in a way minus the evening gown and bouffant hairdo.. but could have the same beauty projection going about your daily life. Also, the being under pressure to never repeat clothing.. just wasn't realizing what a weight that is because it really is not practical for almost everyone! And is really ridiculous! Thanks for great tips Jennifer!

I've never used a steamer - what is their purpose as opposed to just using an iron? Also any tips for getting stubborn fold marks out of clothing, where it has been folded to be stored previously?
@jenniferbrooks--planj54592 жыл бұрын
Steamer is quicker than ironing and you don't have to put out the ironing board. Although, you don't need an ironing board to iron. I got a steamer and haven't touched my iron.

As always, great advice. I really need to work on removing the unneeded season as my closet is a complete mess. I am guessing the stored season would need to be cleaned prior to putting away?

I really enjoyed this video! It is packed with so many good tips which I am already using. It gave me confidence that I’m going in a good direction. I will take your advice to add a steamer. It will help hubby too! I should also add taking pictures as you suggested! I recently moved all my winter clothes to a separate closet but edited 3 large plastic bags to give away! Thank you!

Thank you for this! I’m coming off of a week of not feeling well, so this is great timing to help put a pep back in my step :) P.S. We started Connoisseur Kids this week! I have kids ages 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12 and They’re all enjoying it! The activities are also amusing the 2 year old. 😄 Thanks so much for such an important and applicable resource!
