Hhmmm, it seems to me that some of the dresses that you are calling a line, are actually fit and flare dresses. Fit and flare dresses are fitted above the waist, and from the waist down, they flare out. An a line dress is in the shape of a capital A and goes out slightly skimming the body at the top and from the neck down it flows away from the body in an A form.
