You and I are going to drink a lot of coffee together. Like, borderline dangerous amounts of coffee.
So, first things first. Pour yourself a mug and I’ll introduce myself real quick.
My name’s Jordan - but everyone calls me “J” - and I’m a 27th degree black belt in chugging coffee.
I’m also strength & nutrition coach, I hold several powerlifting world records, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have my writing featured in a variety of outlets like CNN, the Huffington Post, and Schwarzenegger.com.
But listen.
This channel isn’t for fame, publicity, cash, props, fist bumps, likes, pings, pows or whatever else there is.
It’s a place where you and I can chat.
I’ll never sugar coat, lie, or beat around the bush. I’ll tell you everything exactly as I see it. Some stuff you might like. Others you might not.
And that’s totally cool.
Either way, my goal here is to create a discussion. A place where you and I can get together, exchange ideas, and motivate each other to be better every day.
Like I said, we’re gonna drink a lot of coffee together - borderline dangerous amounts - but I’m excited. Because there aren’t too many online communities in which the sole purpose is to inspire and motivate one another.
And that’s exactly what you and I are going to do here.
To your success,
-J

I'm sending this to every single one of my co-workers! As a personal trainer and online coach, I get these questions so frequently and I have to get on my soapbox to explain that this is a much larger picture than simple fat loss. You're expertly breaking down the science and really focusing on the mental aspect too. It is so critical for people to hear this message. This is incredible and please keep making videos like this!

I hired a personal trainer because i wasn’t losing any fat. I wanted the “perfect body”. He advised me that I already have 18% body fat and we just needed to increase my muscle which scared me. After 9 weeks (67 days) I started seeing a difference in the butt area and muscles are showing. Honestly, the nuscles everywhere scared me as I feel like i’m paying so much money and i want a quick fix. We had a conversation that fitness isn’t about conforming to society’s definition of beauty but taking care of our bodies and having a consistent routine that we should stick to. It’s been more than 4 months (i know it’s not much but it’s an achievement for me) and I now go to the gym because I crave endorphins. I thought I should share this because I had an eating disorder for around 8 years because I would go to the gym and not see any difference after a month. I was extremely impatient and not consistent with my goal.

I love your videos and what you do so so much. I've been struggling with BED and as soon as I saw you posting a video about rapid loss I was ready to try it. But then I saw all the intro part (and rewatched it and rewatched it once again) and in my heart I felt you are right. I wouldn't be able to do it without going back to binging and purging after a week. So I stopped the video when you said to. And now i feel so much better for understanding what my body needs and the right way to go through this journey for me. Thank you ❤

Yet I wanna build a healthy relationship with food! So I'll give this progressive adding calories thing a try for 3 months so hopefully at the end of those 3 months I'm 40 pounds lighter. Thank you

Amazing advice Jordan, thanks for not sugar coating. I went through a similar process in the fall with positive results. The one bit of advice that I would pass on would be to have a plan for how you’ll deal with food craving triggers. For myself, I had to cut out TV in the evening as this made me extra snacky. Knowing what situations trigger eating habits that will conflict with your goals is huge.

Thank you for saying that someone with an eating disorder should not attempt this. I have binge eating disorder and have to lose over 100 pounds, but I want to do it right. I was teetering really bad with myself and wanting to see results faster, but I was able to realize that’s not going to be a reality for me. I have the video paused at 9:09 and am clicking off. I just thought that I should say thank you though because you are giving good advice for people that need it. I found you from the obese to beast podcast by the way. I love that you use your behavioral health background to create a more wholistic approach to fitness and wellness. ❤️

L M I’m about 1/3 of the way to reaching my goal actually. Still “obese” but moved down from “morbidly obese” as far as BMI. No binging for almost a year. 😁 Still struggle with my relationship with food at times, but incorporating fiber and protein is absolutely what helped me get out of my binging cycle. I’ve been surprised at how “little” food I can sustain myself on without depriving my body or feeling horribly hungry. Thank you so much for asking and the advice!

@@MadHatta555 That is amazing and great job. Yea when I first added them two to my diet I got worried bc I just want interested in food or hungry so I was like oh no I'm gonna screw my metabolism up and then when I get used to these new things I'm gonna put on a ton of weight but to my surprise nothing like that has happened . Stay strong never give up we will all get healthy in time. From what you told me ur progress is great and definitely on track the direction you want to go, sometimes it is hard to not get wrapped up in progress moving faster and being so much easier . I love the power that comes from not binging it's the absolute best motivation for me. I have so far achieved the one of the first steps, that issue was definitely my dead weight or down fall.

Thank you so much for your content. I’ve been small, I’ve been big, still big now. I appreciate your videos, they help so much. I gotta get back to caring about my health. I loved how you said you have to do the work, then motivation comes. That makes so much sense. Dealing with mental health issues doesn’t help in trying to get better physically. But we all gotta start somewhere. I think that’s the hardest part. Getting started. I’m going to try the rapid fat loss. Thank you for the information.

Thank you so much for this Jordan. Sometimes I think I am eating too much calories and that my deficit is not enough but having a past with severe bulimia and anorexia and a present dealing with food anxiety and binge eating (thanks to finding you I didn’t had one in a month and a half) it’s really comforting to know that I can lose weight without triggering myself, taking care of myself for real for the first time in my life and to have a person like you helping me everytime I wanna go to buy food to deal with stress or when I want to quit. I am actually losing weight but most important: I am changing my habits, my mindset and my relationship with food, the gym and my body. So yes, I am not doing the rapid fast weight loss neither. This is not for me. But some months ago maybe I would do it anyway so thank you for repeating it so I can really hear you. I am not doing it because now I take care of myself. Thank you for changing my life.

When I first started on my weight loss journey I took this approach without even knowing and it was honestly dumb asf because it left me with an even unhealthier relationship to food (I am a binge/emotional eater). I managed to shed 136lbs in just under a year. Although 1I'm thankful that I was able to shed the extra weight because I'm much healthier now, I definitely should've taken a healthier approach to weight loss instead of massive caloric restrictions (just makes EDs that much worse). These last 40lbs are taking forever to lose now that the bulk of my weight is gone. It's been hard to adjust my mentality to the slow and steady way of losing weight because I was so used to my weight dropping very rapidly. But now I understand that because my body is nearly at a normal weight losing it fast is no longer healthy. This video has cleared up a lot of mental hurdles for me. Thank you

You said so many great things I can't praise you and nod my head enough. It's crazy to think how many mistakes I've made on my weight loss journey. I'm one of the ones who thought a rapid fat loss period was a good idea a long time into my journey. I somewhat dealt with this too while intermittent fasting recently. I did IF for four months this year and I dropped a significant amount of weight, but so did my calories. I was hungry all the time. Then I stopped tracking because I got fed up with tracking and most of the weight came back. I'm with you Jordan. I don't recommend RFL unless absolutely necessary. If I've learned anything from you, it's the meaning and understanding the word SUSTAINABLE. I believe that no diet or exercise regimen can escape that word. I've learned how important it is. I'm glad you went in depth with this topic because weight loss is a forever journey and you need to be careful, patient, and aware. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am so grateful!!

After 3 pregnancy and having lost myself a bit in becoming a mom and absolutely dedicating all my time to my kiddos I let my self go too far and now anytime I’ve started walking an elliptical it just hurts me knee or shoulder (prior injuries) and I have to stop but I needed a better understanding of the food calorie side of it and you have explained it so well. I was very curious about this video when I saw it on your videos page. I am in a weight loss journey for like 6 months, lost only 8 pounds during this time because I stopped going to the gym as I was depressed. I was stagnating during all this time on 160 pounds (my height is 5'7) but I still had unhealthy fat over all my body. Went to my doctor and told me that I have a high cholesterol level and I have to give up on sugar (even honey), dairy and red meat. I didn't do it then, but after having a breakdown and receiving treatment for my depression, I gave up entirely on any kind of foods with added sugar and on dairy. It's hard for me to give up on red meat because I like its taste... But hopefully I will, one day. Also, I started jogging/running and work out at home. The thing is that I am not really losing body mass, I am losing body fat, but my weight is a bit higher even. I am not doing any strength workout. So in my opinion, the best thing to do before trying to lose weight is to go see your doctor. The blood tests will reveal what's wrong with you and you should first fix that before doing something bad to yourself.

OK Jordan, I'm trying to make hard changes in my life so that I can actually change..... so based on your suggestion, due to my history of bingeing and food anxiety....I am not going to do the rapid fat loss! I have only had one moderate binge episode since 1/27 and I DO NOT want to risk triggering myself for a self-sabotage episode. And, shocker of all shockers...yay me....I've stopped the video, per your advice, and am not going to watch the rest of it. I am learning to trust what the experts are telling me to do and not rely on my own jacked up wisdom!! Steady and slow wins the race!

When you said starting a rapid fat loss program when you're in that "plateau" phase is the worst time to do it... That got my attention. I'm in the middle of a slow result phase... Looking for something faster... But I'm having a hard time sticking to something stricter. And you're right, being looser with what I'm eating would help. I never do good with super strict fat loss programs. I'm done searching for fat loss videos. I'm doing fine. This was the video I needed to watch.

As some one who has spent the last year working with a therapist on BED and food anxiety, I cannot thank you enough for the disclaimer! You are always so thoughtful and on-point when it comes to the mind/body/food connection in your videos, on posts, and in your emails. Also, your characters are just the f*cking best!

This has been my favorite video so far! I was doing something like the schema you mentioned, and it was working. It does help to align the strictness with the highest level of motivation. I like the idea of rotating it each month. Thanks again!

@@jordansyatt Thank you so much! Just one quick question- if I am considering it at all whatsoever, what is the range of fat loss in lbs you would recommend it for? For example, someone who is looking at a fat loss of minimum 50 lbs, or? Thanks as always! You're the best!

Hi Jordan, I am a new subscriber, and I absolutely love your content (both here and on Instagram). I love, love, love the Harry Potter series and it's literally best of both worlds for me when I watch your videos. It'll be great if you could do a video for people who are towards the end of their weight loss journey. As in, how to decide on goal weight, how to transition to maintenance, etc. I have lost 130lbs over the last year and a half and am hovering around 24-25bmi. I have a little bit of "diet fatigue" and am unable to sustain lower calories (not to mention, I have become wayy more active). Anyway, appreciate your content and keep up the awesome work!!

Love that despite the title, you emphasize the longer-term big picture. Your biceps: "check back in a year or so;" individual history: "if it's too risky for your future behavior don't do this;" how to best implement rapid fat loss: "as a start of a bigger plan, to segue into a pre-planned subsequent phase of your journey" and many more examples. You help remind us to keep our steps and processes in perspective to the ultimate goal - thank you.

Oh man! All these pointers were so helpful, but your discussion of the jab approach, and ascending caloric scheme was a huge "ah ha!" moment for me!! My problem for years was the exact theory you explained in that I am always able to dive in with full motivation and will-power for the first week or so, but then it fizzles and the self-doubt and demotivating sabotage kicks in and then I go to the opposite spectrum and binge. I have even been able to do a two and half day pure water fast and was TOTALLY fine! But if continue to try and stay in a really low caloric deficit right immediately after that, it leads to binging. So I am totally going to try your strategy and start really low, then add a an extra hundred calories or so each week as my motivation subsides, then cycle back to the extreme low again after 5 or 6 weeks. I can completely see the wisdom in that, and really believe it could be the key to stop my binging when trying to lose weight.

Howdy J, I appreciate you. I appreciate your informative messages here on you tube, your pod caste & IG posts n videos. I just gotta find that last piece of the puzzle to figure out my food/calories. I have been weight training with trainers this last year, i still weigh the same(not a bad thing, toned-ish) but i have these last 10lbs-ish to lose. Maybe this is the jolt of strong black coffee advice that I could do a rapid fire weight loss. I get its not a race but lifestyle & now THIS IS the change up coach J i needed to complete me & inspire me. Luv ya more & Thank you for your straight shootin advice... J

Really liked this! Finally some common sense! I think someone should verify somehow all the damaging videos on yt about all kinds of diets. I know "it's a free world" but those vloggers, maybe without realizing, are destroying some lives. And ofc this should be done not only for this field. Me gusta!!
