Portion control is the best one. And not going for second helpings. American restaurants serve very big portions. My husband and I will either share an entree or only eat half and being the rest home for another meal. And stay away from all you can eat buffets!!! Very good common sense advice Marie Ann especially water intake

I know, right?! Sometimes, I go to buffets with friends, but I don't really like them anymore!! First, I don't like that almost all of the food is cold, second, the restaurants are always full of people ( personally, I have begun calling them free-for-alls!) and I especially don't like it that they're always full of fat people!! Nothing against fat people, mind you, it's just that so many of them look so miserable!! Thanks so much, Marie Anne for your spot on advice in so many areas of a woman's life!! Merci bien, a bientot, and a Happy Easter to you and your family!! P.S. How do you say, Happy Easter in French?!🐰🐇🐥🐥🌸🌸✝️⚜️

Every morning I have a delicious bowl of porridge oats that I've made the night before, so half cup of oats, mixed with two dried dates, two dried apricots, some chia seeds, cup of almond or cashew nut milk, little cold water, mix well and cover with plastic bag and put in fridge overnight, enjoy in the morning after having a big glass of hot water and lemon juice which moves the digestion along very well... Lunch is two ryvitas with tuna, or houmous and half an apple.. Dinner huge salad or vegetables with fish or chicken, nothing else through the day, and drink lots of water as you say.. Have a happy day paula x

Marie-Anne, I am curious about the average French woman's wine consumption. Here in Canada and possibly the U.S. women often make drinking wine a social event and sometimes we share a whole bottle with one friend at a sitting or have a full glass before a meal. Do French women only drink wine at meals? Would they ever drink wine on its own?

The best thing I have ever done is move to one meal a day! This is so simple, no complicated rules to follow, just one meal a day. Amazingly easy! Very quickly I got used to it and now I don't even think about food until my evening meal! Then I have a lovely healthy homemade meal with my husband and a nice dessert,fruit and yoghurt is my favourite.

Hello Jill Taylor, may I ask for how long you have been doing this? :-) Because of my acid reflux, should probably not have that one meal at night, but surely this could be shifted to maybe a late breakfast?
@GermandaSpeedwell
@GermandaSpeedwell 5 жыл бұрын
Hi The Kings Daughter! I have been doing this for one month and I can't see myself ever going back to the usual 3 meals a day. I think you can have your one meal at whatever time of day suits you, it makes no difference,but it helps to be consistent each day eating around the same time. When I have to eat at lunch because of a social commitment it is hard to eat again in the evening cos I feel full, so then I have to go about 28 hours before my next eating window ,which is not ideal! Obviously I am not going to starve, but it feels mentally harder ! I like to eat with my husband in the evening and I don't like to go to bed hungry so this fits in with my life. Do whatever works for you!

Great tips, Marie-Anne! (1) I liked your suggestion to use a smaller plate, thus smaller portions, to reduce intake, as well! (2)You also mentioned triggers. I noticed several years ago that every time I went to the airport, even to take or meet someone at the gate (before 9/11 tightened security) I had a pressing urge to go buy 2-3 candy bars. After much thought I realized that stemmed back to a time when my husband owned an incentive group travel company when we were in our early 20's ... before the internet & booking your own tickets. And many people were reluctant to travel internationally on their own. We were fortunate to to take the same groups twice yearly for about 6 yrs. We went to countries I never imagined we'd see in our lifetimes! At the airport I always bought 4 candy bars, gum, and books for us for the flight. After he sold the agency, that frequent travel stopped. When the realization hit me, eventually that urge decreased, then stopped.❣ EXCEPT when we fly ourselves!😖 Then I make sure I have a couple of high protein bars with me. I do still want to buy 1 regular salted pretzel at Annie's Pretzels & do so if they're open! But if not, OK. I do always buy 1 piece of chocolate in case I have a low suger episode, especially with flight delays these days. It's funny what our triggers are! 😏 Thanks, Marie-Anne❣💞💞

Spot on! Thank you Marie-Anne! It's what so many of us need to be reminded of. It's so common sense and yet, so hard sometimes when you're not surrounded by like-minded people. It takes conscious effort! Can I add a 6th tip - eat more vegetables! Any vegetable, variety is great but also pile in the favorites. Eat the ones you like, not the ones someone decided arbitrarily is better (looking at you, broccoli! I like it, but some people don't and that's ok!). Vegetables fill you up, they're so nutritious, great for your skin etc like the water. If you start every meal with a soup or salad (easy on the cream soups and dressings), you get them in before your meal. Add vegetables to the main too - tomato or spinach sauce on the pasta, instead of alfredo or pesto. When you grill some meat, also grill up veggies. They can be delicious, as well as healthy and slimming. This is my strategy, plus everything Marie-Anne says above. It's so simple, and yet, so hard sometimes! And I love how Marie-Anne focuses on the food rather than exercise - because it makes more of a difference, and it's a much easier change to make in your lifestyle.

Dear Marie Anne, you might have helped me to identify my problems after I watched this video and your other video why French Women don't get fat. Snack!!!! I am Chinese. When I lived in China, I never snacked on a regular basis. In China, only kids eat snacks. Very few adult do that. After I moved to US many years ago, I picked up this habit from my American husband who loves snack and a big portion of our grocery shopping was looking for snacks. I eat fairy healthy meals with small portion, and exercise regularly. But I still have problem to keep my tummy flat and my weight has slowed creped up over the years. I am still within healthy weight, but I don't like that i can't fit into my favorite pants any more. I blamed it on aging. But in both your videos, you mentioned about cutting back on snacks and that it is not necessary. I didn't use to snack and I was fine. I am going to try to cut back on snacks and replace the cookies or crackers with fruits. I am excited that I might be able to get my flat tummy back one day!!! Thank you!

I agree with all your tips, however I believe you can still snack on crudités best try using celery sticks, cucumber and carrot sticks no salsa just lemon juice and pepper for a dip. The truest tip ever Water is top priority everything relies on water. Water not only hydrates, increases the metabolic rate, increasing digestion and the elimination of toxins often found in trace amounts in foods. To avoid toxic overload from the agrochemical industry choose organic always.

Words of wisdom! I think most women know these rules but it’s so nice to hear it as a reminder especially when it comes with a French accent! It’s hard to stay on track when you’re home now, near a refrigerator. Have healthy fruits and veggies ready to snack on. And the occasional cookie. But sugar is an addiction. So if that’s you (like myself), you may have to cut it out completely to “detox” first. Losing weight is a marathon, especially after your metabolism slows down. This lockdown won’t help, so you need to keep moving, walking or running daily. Enjoy the fresh air with your kids or dog. Once you get older, like me, it’s so much harder to lose those extra pounds, so try not to gain them. That’s what this video is about, maintaining a healthy balanced lifestyle! Good luck everyone! And stay safe!

Curious about who eats all those pastries in shops in France since snacking is not ideal? I thought the French like pastries?

The pastries would be a breakfast item - le petit dejune (spelling?).

No snaking and no cheese!!??! Marie you are killing me!!!😄. I need to lose 10 pounds. I am seriously thinking to put a big mirror at my fridge door, I think I will feel ashamed of my self with that piece of cake in my hand.☺️

Hubby and I recently went to a family event where there was a nice buffet luncheon afterwards. We had a plate of healthy veggies and proteins and a small plate of fruit. We were astounded at how teenagers had a plate of candies. cakes and lots of breads with cream cheeses. Sure, they are thin now and do lots of sports but what will happen to them if they continue to indulge as they get older?!

I agree totally with you, this is a very wisdom video, for me, the main tip is reduced portion, I love cheese too and eat a little portion daily, less meat, fruits and vegetables every day, It make me be in a good shape with some exercise too. A step by step eat daily would be a good video. By the way, you look so chic in your beatiful dress!

The comments about mindless snacking are right on target. However, I would suggest that when the “munchies” hit, perhaps a small piece of fruit or some celery sticks or the like will (a) satisfy the hunger pangs, (b) add some water and fibre, and (c) increase the number of servings of fruit and vegetables, of which so many people don’t eat enough in a day.

I agree with your advice but I would add a 6th tip. Increase your protein intake. Ideally aim for .8 grams of protein per pound of your ideal weight. Our protein needs increase with age (especially for women) and protein provides greater satiety than carbohydrates or fat. Also, avoid processed food as much as possible.
