I am Dutch and I was born here, if you are on a romantic date or something, it's appreciated. Outside of that, it's often not. I must not that this is a generalisation and not every Dutch woman wants to be treated in the same way. It's definitely not like Poland though, where if you let a woman carry the grocery shopping, it's seen as rude. This is also a generalisation though. Cultural differnces, I love them.

theSilent gamer my current gf is dutch af too. But she still appreciates it if I carry her bag if it's heavy or if i open doors for her. I come from South Africa and in schools we always are taught to treat girls like literal queens. I remember one teacher would get mad if we swore of girls were nearby but if there were none he'd be a literal sailor the way he talked. Sadly nowadays a small gesture of holding a door open for 5 seconds longer because you can be nice and let the person go in easier is seen as sexist

At a first moment I thought that dutch people were very cold hearted. They were blunt and direct in their opinions. From my culture we see love from the romantic perspective of it. Our love is a lot of times unconditional and very intense, even possessive. The negative point is that we often sacrifice our needs for our partners. There is no individuality. Here I learned that love means letting the other person have their own dreams and needs. People don't lose their freedom. And that is not being cold, quite the opposite.

However, I do believe a little possessiveness or jealousy in a relationship isn't really a bad thing. There should always be a balance between respecting someone's boundaries and passionately wanting someone. Even as a dutch person I can sometimes get agitated by that somewhat lack of passion and calculated behavior. To me it seems we're very focused on the mind, instead of seeking balance between heart and mind. So don't lose that passion, Jaqueline. Dutch people need it, even when they don't know it. ;)

I've been married to a Dutch woman for about 18 years now and I must say I cannot complain at all. Our relationship has always been more or less what I expected of it. We love each other; there are some minor annoyances every now and then but nothing our relationship can't handle. We have two terrific daughters. I am perfectly happy with her. There's never been this need of having to adapt to each other. But then, well, I am Dutch myself.

As a Flemish man (Southern neighbour of the Dutch) I love Dutch women. Why? Because they are a lot more direct than the ladies in Flanders. They moved away from the "traditional" male vs female patterns. If they like you? they will tell you. Heck, they'll probably be the ones who make a move on you. Which is, in a lot of situations, unheard of in Flanders :). I, honestly, admire the Dutch in their "way of being". Yes, sometimes they are a bit rowdy and loud (where we are far more reserved in public) but even when I'm cursing at times about it, I do admire that trait. Never change who you are my northern "cousins", I really love you for it! :) I also have no idea why this is in my recommended feed but I'm happy it showed up :). Really nice video :).

A piece of advise regarding the "I hold the door open for the guy". This is because of an untold rule. The first one reaching the door will open it, regardless of gender. Just watch dutchmen in office buildings, malls, etc. So we men want to open the door for you, but let us reach the door first. Then we will gladly open it for you and feel proud about it :-)

I think there is another aspect to that. It's called feminism. Women in the Netherlands want to be and are quite independent. So I believe that to dutch women it isn't that much of a deal.

I moved to The Netherlands for love. My partner and I met speaking English so it has been very difficult to switch to speaking completely in Dutch together. Sometimes it's just easier to express myself in English and without even thinking about it I switch to English. Everyone speaks English and most Dutch people are happy to speak English which was definitely a barrier to being able to communicate in Dutch. What turned it around for me was going to an intensive program such as dutchsummerschool where you are forced to continue speaking only in Dutch.

This is so sweet. I'm in America and met my boyfriend online, who lives in Belgium. He knows English, however I've been trying to learn Dutch so that when I move there in the future, I won't be clueless to when someone speaks Dutch. As well as the possible chance of taking the language proficiency test to live there. I feel like I definitely need to learn Dutch for that.

Paula C I'm able to communicate in English like many others, but I wouldn't say I can express myself to nearly the same degree as I'm able to in Dutch. About the same issue you have with Dutch. It's easier for us to kind of speak English with all the movies and tv show than it is for others to speak Dutch.

I love what Anna says about Dutch guys skimping on being a gentleman. I'm a guy and get told both ways. That I'm gentleman but also that because I choose not to do things I should try harder to become one. I think dutch men enjoy being gentlemen to women, but in general view men and women as equals and thus we treat people as equals. The pinnen comment by Saint Srid hits the nail on the head; if you can do it yourself then do it yourself. But if you're overburdened with something we'll help you out. A trait other cultures don't have.

No it does have everything to do with it in my opinion. Just because you're born a woman doesn't mean you're a queen. Same goes for men. They are not born gents. But I understand where you're coming from. I hear it a lot, and I do understand. However, from living in a society basically knowing no royalty or gentleman behaviour I can tell you that they have no problems having fulfilling relationships regardless. It's just not a prerequisite for a successful society. What I'm saying with that is that it's not "just nature". That said I think men and women should be more mindful of each other when they are trying to be that gent or that queen.

Not that they shouldn't, but that they are perfectly capable of doing it themselves. And then obviously I don't mean that men shouldn't do it when the occasion arises, but I personally wouldn't go out of my way to hold open a door unless a person is right behind me, that's kinda just something to expect from anyone, any gender. But then there are also grey areas, if you're walking in, and there's no one behind you at the moment, but a woman comes just around the corner, even if he saw her coming or heard her coming, he has no obligation to keep it open just for her imo. However the point I'm trying to defend is that women aren't exactly queens and men aren't workers, more specific would be.. women can be queens at times (or deserve it) and men can act as workers when it's neccesary, not when it's something they ''should'' be. Men have handled themselves all the way back from the stone age mainly on their own. And yes, women have played a part in that, but it's not exactly that women were worshipped by them, but most likely just neccessary to feed the kids. Simply said : Man hunts, provides food, woman feeds and nurtures. Not to mention, men are leaders due to them not being the smartest. Men act on instinct and logic (even if the logic from centuries ago was..questionable) while women act mainly on emotion. There's a reason why the majority of the leaders were and are men. I don't question that women may be smarter than men in some degree, I mean emotionally for sure, but perhaps not in the way to rule over people in a way that would satisfy both parties. Each party have neccessary assets, however for men those are more in domination, safe keeping and providing. While for women they were mostly compromised of taking care of offspring. Not sure if it makes a whole lotta sense since I'm pretty tired after pulling an all nighter and even working a full shift -_- but hope you get kind of the gist of it. These days it's 360 degrees different though compared to centuries ago. The average girl of my age triggers me endlessly compared to what I've seen in documentaries and heard from by elderly people from roughly 60-70 years ago.

Thus you arrive with ' national character' which is broadly represented. If part of the national character is to have difficulty expressing emotion then you will have a considerable number of individuals who seem to be or are without emotion. @@MsMesem Yes... yes there is. But everything you just said contributes nothing to what you actually stated. You are talking about a mental disorder, NOT ' social norms that differ per country ' those are very different things. Being from a certain country and being raised a certain way doesn't mean everyone in any country will or will not have that mental illness. I think before throwing such serious disorders just out there you should do a bit more research on the topic. But even if for some reason you were right to assume that everyone in a country is the same because everyone got raised the same which obivously isn't true, then the Dutch should be extremely emotional if everyone has the same raising as me. I have a lot of friends from other countries and they are all extremely surprised and not used at all to how emotionally involved I am, really wanting to know how someone is doing, hugging, kissing and being showered with love like my parents raised me and so I give that exact same thing back.

Saint Srid You're talking about a completely different thing. In the example you mention, it's not that the woman cannot open the door (in the sense that she is incapable to do it herself). That's what makes you a GENTLEMAN opening the door for her even if she can do it on her own. But then again, if you are Dutch I think you are not able to see things that way. It's a cultural difference. Though I have to admit that I've met some Dutch dudes, well mannered and well travelled that did understand the concept of gentleman. And I am lucky: my husband is a Dutch gentleman:))

For me it was easy, at one point (while still living abroad) my wife made her intention clear she wanted to learn Dutch and speak Dutch to me. She started to read children books and after a month even though her Dutch was still very poor, she forced me to only talk Dutch and got really mad if I switched. Now she is basically fluent. You have to force yourself to use Dutch everyday, constantly. Force yourself to watch the news in Dutch, read articles and books in Dutch and watch Dutch tv series (even if it is with subtitles)

I am Dutch, but whenever people speak English to me, I'll reply in English, even when I'm instructed to reply in Dutch. If I would take part of a Dutch show where Dan Karaty is one of the judges, I know can't speak Dutch to him, even knowing there is a woman hidden in the building translating everything I say in Dutch to English, though his earphone. That being said, it will be hard for me to speak Dutch to a woman I love if she's from a non-Dutch-speaking country. It's stronger than myself. But, they also say I have a talent for knowledge transfer, heck I've even been working as a kind of "private teacher" recently, although, I must impress on "kind of", as I am more of a helper than an actual teacher. But if you ever fall in love with a Dutch person here are a few handy phrases: "Ik hou van jou" = "I love you" "Ik hou ook van jou" = "I love you too" "Je bent mooi" = "You are beautiful" "Ik wil altijd bij je zijn" = "I wanna be with you, forever" "Ik kan niet leven zonder jou" = "I can't live without you" "Ik denk altijd aan je" = "I am always thinking about you" "Mag ik je knuffelen?" = "May I hug you?" "Je bent een droom die uitkomt" = "You are a dream coming true" "Ik geef je mijn hart" = "I'll give you my heart" "Ik ben verliefd op jou" = "I am in love with you" And then a few words: "Schat", "Schatje" = "Honey", "Darling" "Kus", "Zoen" = "Kiss" "Schoonheid" = "Beauty" (mostly only used for women). "Mooie ogen" = "Beautiful eyes" "Sexy" = "Sexy" "Knuffel" = "Hug" "Romantiek" = "Romance" "Romantisch" = "Romantic" "Liefde" = "Love" A few things NOT to say: "Neuken" = "Fucking" "Lekker wijf" = "Hot chick" (Although Dutch women can find this term pretty intimidating). Advies... Neem een goede leraar Engels en lees mijn tekst nog eens. Ik heb namelijk NIET gezegd dat ik graag Engels spreek met Dan Karaty... Ik heb gezegd dat als hij mij in een talentenjacht zou beoordelen dat ik altijd in het Engels op hem zou reageren omdat hij nu eenmaal Engels praat en omdat ik dan in het Engels nadenk reageer ik dan in het Engels en niet in het Nederlands omdat het gewoon automatisch gaat, zonder nadenken. Zoals je ook zonder nadenken (mag ik hopen) als iemand een steen naar je hoofd smijt. En je vocabulaire niet misplaatst? Ik zou ook maar een op Nederlandse les gaan om te weten waarom jouw vocabulaire respectloos is, en misschien moet ik je ook nog wat geschiedenislessen geven om je duidelijk te maken dat ze daar, in de tijd dat mijn grootouders nog klein waren, je mond voor uitspoelden met groene zeep. Als jij het woord "tyfuslul" niet misplaatst vindt, moet ik je misschien even een Dikke Van Dale sturen zodat je kunt opzoeken wat die twee woorden die je hebt samengevoegd betekenen. Hoe durf je eigenlijk iemand voor "tyfuslul" uit te schelden en dan zelf ook nog eens iemand (wie het ook is) te beschuldigen van respectloosheid? I wonder if I should REFUSE to speak Dutch to you. Het enige nutteloze aan deze "discussie" is JOUW "bijdrage" en je laatste comment laat maar weer zien dat je niets begrepen hebt van een letter die ik getikt heb en je geeft je wel erg makkelijk gewonnen. Ik heb alles gelezen wat je getikt hebt en dat kan van jou niet gezegd worden, dus je kunt geen gelijk of ongelijk hebben, daar jij een andere discussie bent gestart dan waar mijn bericht over ging, dus je standpunt opnieuw uitleggen heeft ook geen zin, omdat je toch op dezelfde verkeerde conclusie komt. Mensen die mij kennen weten dat ik van de VS namelijk nooit een hoge pet op heb gehad, maar ik beoordeel mensen niet op hun nationaliteit, dus ook Amerikanen niet. Ik geloof niet in "wij" en "zij", ik geloof ik mensen. Waar ze vandaan komen boeit me weinig. Je vult dus dingen in op basis van halve informatie die je ook nog eens een keer niet goed gelezen hebt en dan ga jij mensen voor respectloos uit lopen maken en eigenschappen toewijzen die niet eens waar zijn en waar ook nooit een woord over is gerept. De waarheid is dat ik altijd een voorliefde heb gehad voor vreemde talen, Engels incluis, en omdat ik op het internet altijd internationaal actief ben geweest en dus min of meer wel Engels moest gebruiken ben ik in die taal vergroeid geraakt zodanig dat als iemand Engels tegen me spreekt ik zonder nadenken Engels terugpraat en dat noem jij respectloos en gebrek aan eigenwaarde? This is a complicated subject. I think it is often all about ego. If you speak your partner's language you feel reassuringly dominant (even if you aren't) :) The problem is, it quickly becomes habitual, unless you manage to apply the admirable system of 'set language days' system described in the video. Personally I haven't managed this ... yet. However if a third person is present, the problem of which language to use is solved by that person's choice of language.

I can relate to this! My husband is from Belgium and he speaks Dutch. I’m from the US but I’m Mexican American so I speak English and Spanish. We just moved to Belgium and I’ve been taking classes to learn Dutch and it is so hard to learn!!! I just finished level 2 so I’m going to keep going and hopefully become fluent one day. The Dutch are very direct and logical. It doesn't make sense to go out of your way to do something for a woman when she can easily do it herself. I know foreigners who have gone out of their way to open doors for me, take my jacket for me etc etc, never in my life have I felt weaker than in those moments because you do not feel equal, you do not feel like you have any kind of control. Dutch men can be proper gentlemen when they want to, but most often they just treat you equal so you can feel comfortable, respected and like you immediately fit in.

You need the language to talk about things that English doesn't have words for. For instance "verkering" is the word for an amourous relationship that doesn necessarily include sex. Note that in Dutch you fall in love TO (je wordt verliefd OP), and make love WITH (je vrijt met). We also have a semi-poetic term "de liefde bedrijven"

That's true, there are some words in some languages that can't be translated. That does not mean the other language does not have an equivalent word or expression to match the same feeling or situation. Never assume that. English is a very rich language. The issue is that most of the times English language it is used as Lingua Franca and so none of the parties communicating will master it as well as their own native language. So one of them will criticise English for not having words for feelings they can only express in their native languages, when in reality it's the lack of true English language mastery that is lacking.

It just seems your vocabulary is lacking a bit, no offense. I'm Dutch and I'm married to an American and live in the USA. I always find it hard to find the words when they describe complex feelings. Since I've grown up expressing them in Dutch. You have to learn to not be literal but find the word that "feels" the same. And, indeed, sometimes there won't be one. The literal translation of gezellig does not come close to what it means in Dutch. Mostly again because for us it describes a feeling that we attach to certain people/events/places. But you can find different non-literal translations for the seperate things it means to us in different contexts.

I think the reason dutch people get so happy when people try to learn dutch is because dutch isnt a widely spoken language. In Dutch schools we're tought english, french, and german (and sometimes even Spanish or Chinese). But I doubt in Germany, France, or English-speaking coutnries they're tought Dutch. Dutch people are expected to just learn their language instead of them learning our language because we're such a small country. It always makes me happy to hear people speaking Dutch if it isn't their mother language. (Also Dutch is a pain in the ass to learn.)

I have a male friend who tries so very hard to be a gentleman... pulling out a chair for me, trying to take my coat, opening doors, letting me step through the door first, paying for dinners, all that sort of stuff... as a Dutch woman I respond with 'I can do those things myself, you know? I don't need someone to help me with every single thing I do. I have hands, I can open doors and pull out chairs, I'm not weak, I can carry bags... but if you want to pay for my dinner, go right ahead because free food is good!' This whole area was settled by tough immigrants trying to survive and tried to live by Christian faith. They had to learn English and be smart or the log men at the mill would rip you off . My grandpa had 120 acres and his dad had a forty to live off. They made it.

He laughed and said nothing was different before or after. Pump water and haul it all winter. Hoe weeds all summer. Every Dutch farmer was in the same boat. As for a male, politely opening the door to a woman, etc. .... This was a Dutch habit as well, back then. Dutch men certainly still want to be gentlemen, but these days this particular habit can be regarded as intrusive or even sexist behaviour. That's why Dutch males don't do that anymore. We Dutch have a particular sence of humor. And to understand that humor/ humour... it is necessary to speak some Dutch too. To know some dutch to understand. I liked to say, that any child of mine, should go to Afrika, and only should come home when it was pissy potted. Women from abroad could think I 'am an asshole. The joke is in "looking seriously"... and you can only tell by our fun eyes (cheeky smile). Yeah, we like to say a lot of things, we do not always mean. One big reason why I think Dutch men compared to other countries don't really ' court ' is because we Dutch have always been kinda ahead in like emancipating ( i think it's the same word english xD ). With the Dutch not being 'gentlemen' I guess the thing is mostly: we don't want to treat you that different just for being a woman, we don't hold a chair out for our male friends, you're as strong as capable as them, so why treat you like you can't? Same as paying for dates, we're on a date as much as you are, why should we front the bill y'know? Better said: if a Dutch person is going out of their way to pay for you and do everything for you they want something from you they're not sure you wanna give up, they're not more important than you and neither are you to them, so be wary of grandiose generosity.

unfortunately I did not have a very good experience dating a dutch guy, but, I do not think all dutch guys are like him, but, problably was indeed him the problem. I always tried to have cultural sensitivity and understand were he was coming from, but at times, I felt he was not taking into consideration my latin culture as well, must be a a 50/50. At the end, was a learning experience, I had a hard time with the directness, but, honestly sometimes I felt he was just being a jerk. Hopefully, will meet another dutch guy and have a different experience, since this one was not quite the best.
