I have BEEEEEN looking for an answer to this exact problem all over KZbin. Thanks! Everybody talks truss rod (Which I did!) My Guild has a truss rod cover. I think the Fishman makes the bridge bone too high. Or the top has warped...but it doesn't appear so. (Lotta courage with that Dremel!) None of my cousins ever gave me a guitar!!!
@HankCoffey5 жыл бұрын
The Fishman pickup should look like a thin metal shim underneath the saddle. Sometimes there are wood shims there also, that can be taken out. If not, the bottom of the saddle would have to be sanded. It's best to rub the saddle on sandpaper, on a flat surface. I used a Dremel because there was a lot to take off. I still should have flattened the surface with sandpaper after. I did this in a later video. Check truss rod, top, and bridge first. If strings are still to high to lower, a luthier might have to reseat the neck.

@HankCoffey3 жыл бұрын
Hey JB! Well, if you ever take too much off, you can usually put a shim under the saddle to bring it back up.
@John-wr6yo Жыл бұрын
I have found out from experience. When sanding down the saddle it is imperative that you leave a little excess height for seasonal expansion and contraction movement of the neck.

Thanks a lot dude! This is straight to the point and very helpful! The bridge on my guitar is rediculously high. I've thought about sanding it down and now I will definitely give it try. Like you said, if it gets messed up in the process, it's not really a big deal to buy another bridge. The chipmunks singin' "I was drunk the day my mama got out of prison..." made my day man!
@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
lol, thanks chillkraut. Good luck with lowering your action, just be careful and ignore my metric measurements... they are wrong. If you want to be safe, just take about half of what you think needs to come off. You can take more off the next re-string.
@yessure52916 жыл бұрын
Two thirty seconds is one sixteenth :) To shave the bridge mark around the base - but use a flat surface and some really fine sandpaper and press the bridge down evenly and slowly drag it around in figure 8's - keep checking how much you take off and to be sure you are doing it evenly. A dremel is way too aggressive and you wont get it flat and even.
@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
Yes Sure I stayed in 32nds to save confusion. I have the metric conversions totally wrong. I later sanded it against a flat surface to make sure it was even. That didn't make it into this video. There was a lot of plastic to take off. You would have been sanding a long time without the Dremel ;)
@yessure52916 жыл бұрын
Hi - I only take off a few thousands of an inch per trial - TUSQ are a bit expensive and I want to try it each sanding to be sure I didn't go too far. ;)
@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
Yes Sure like I said in the video. Whatever you want to take off at the 12th fret, double it at the bridge, and that's what you take off. There's no need to rub a few thousands off at a time, on ultra fine grit, while you're test fitting 100 times ;)

I myself put a piece of fairly rough sand paper down on a flat surface like a table and sand it down that way then when I'm pretty close I put down fine sand paper. The dremel is not a bad idea because its probably a bit faster but once you get close I'd still go with sand paper on a table so that the finish surface is flat. I did this to a no name 12 string recently and it worked out well. I ended up filing the nut down quite a bit on it however and undercut one of the slots. If you ever do that use baking soda and super glue to raise it then refile it.
@jsnell1266 жыл бұрын
Yeah I sanded down my Taylor's saddle with some sandpaper flat on a table. It works well. Start with rough paper, finish with fine. I didn't take off much and it helped the playability tremendously. Just keep the area you are removing flat and even... if you take too much off, you can put a thin shim in the slot.
@jimthebutcher997 жыл бұрын
You could use a flat file at the end to make sure the bridge is flat. Lay your file down and take the last bit off rubbing the bridge down the file. Just read the sandpaper comment below. Same thjng.
@ricksmith73707 жыл бұрын
It’s a saddle not a bridge.
@jimthebutcher997 жыл бұрын
Rick Smith In contrast to many other stringed instruments, the flat top guitar's bridgeis the saddle and the saddle is thebridge. To my mind the plastic part we are talking about is closer to a bridge. The entire wood plastic part as a whole would be the saddle. We are not working on that only the plastic part
@jamesmilton87656 жыл бұрын
A dollar bill can be used as a gauge under the middle of the strings when adjusting the truss rod. It should just pull out. A heavy player might need more. If you sand too much of the bridge you can make shims using an old credit card. Finally make all adjustments with the strings you intend to use BEFORE, not after, as changing gauge will affect the setup.

Some young guys & even the stupid sales man at the music store did not know a thing when I mentioned this techique to them. The lowest I was able to achieve is 1.25mm on string 1 & 1.65mm on string 6 (meaurement done on 17th fret). However, the final tone depends on the wood quality of the guitar. Low end guitar may loss tone quality or get fret buzz from 13rd to 20th fret (cannot be modified by truss rod at the body).

I have been playing for years and struggled, sorry no one told me crap. I learned a lot of chords played a lot , finger pick and have a good voice and write songs but playing was hard because the action was too high. I watched about 8 video and yours was the last one. I still could not get the action down by turning the truss rod port to the right with an allen wrench- righty tighty. The bridge already looks as low as it can get. I guess the next step is to take it to a professional. You video is explain a lot. I would love to have a guitar that played as easily as the one in this video. Mine is an Alvarez by Kazou Yairi Model DY74. I could easily fit 2 quarters plus between the fret board and the strings at the 12th fret and there is still some room and they fall out. Sad but true. No wonder I had such a hard time with bar chords and playing in general. Maybe I just need a different guitar or just take it to a professional.

@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
There's really no way to set intonation on a single saddle acoustic bridge. My intonation is just fine. If you are a hard player, leave your action stock... because you will get fret buzz with it lower. It's all personal preference man. Just figure out what you like. I still experiment with tuning and setup after 30 years.

No, the sound is usually the strings and what the guitar is made of. I do not play acoustic guitar much, so I am not an expert. But usually the phosphor bronze strings are warmer and fuller than 80/20 bronze. 80/20 bronze is a brighter string. Smaller gauge strings also make the sound less full. 11's or 12's should be fine. I tried 10's and the sound got a lot thinner.

Two things: You don't have to totally remove the strings to access the bridge,just loosen them and slide it out. Also if you are having trouble playing the guitar with .013 strings on it, why not put a set of .011's on it? Otherwise, I followed your advice about the bridge somewhat,but just took emory cloth and sanded it down off the bottom.
@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
Norman John I removed the strings off of the posts because they were not wound correctly. So I was going to rewind them anyway. 4/32 action at the 12th fret is too high no matter what gauge strings are on it. That's why the guitar was given to me. I wasn't expecting this video to get as popular as it is or I would have took more care into making it. What would have been the proper thing to do would be to flat sand the bridge after I dremeled it to make sure it's totally flush. I also have my metric conversions totally wrong. So anyone that uses metric are probably wondering what the hell I'm talking about. lol.

Somebody told me at Zagreb guitar not to mess with the saddle until the guitar gets a little older because he said the wood is new and is still green and will settle in time.He said if you mess with the saddle and bring it down when the guitar is new I will have problems up the road.I get a whole bunch of opinions on this topic.lol.

I love you're "ah heck, I'll just go ahead and give it a shot" attitude! And, voila! Success! Personally I am just to scared to do it myself because I just know I'd mess it up beyond an easy repair. Very entertaining video!

Thank you Sandra! You just have to be careful and take your time. Use sandpaper, on a flat surface, instead of a dremel. 👍

What are the titles of those solo pieces you played?

Damn nice of ya cuz.. I just bought this guitar. Not exactly the same but VERY close. They aint going cheap...( OK, they arent a $3000 Gibby, or Martin ) Set up is basic from the factory and needs to be worked. mine will be lowered too. Just as a hint, you do the rough cut any way you like, but them we usually lay sandpaper flat on a surface, and slide the saddles back and forth to fine sand, and level them. Its was great to find this vid using the same guitar. Good job.
@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks. Yeah I went back later and plained the saddle with sandpaper. Yeah I like this guitar. I should have put new strings on it in this video. I didn't think it was going to get many views. lol
@Blaydrnnnr6 жыл бұрын
LOL.. well good on ya for the views...its a pretty common problem with newer players and their first acoustics. Like I said, it's pretty common for most guitars from the factory to have a "generic" set up...with he exception of some shops that do a decent set up before they leave the shop. These solid maple Guilds are great for studio work. ( Thats what I'm doing with mine, for performance, I use a dreadnought spruce top ) good vid, it'll help people...
@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
@@Blaydrnnnr thanks again! Yeah, I know what you're saying. The generic setup is probably why my cousin didn't like it ; )

I have fret buzz on 2 fret 1 string only what do I do?
@HankCoffey5 жыл бұрын
Could be a high fret in that area, might not be leveled perfectly. Make sure the truss rod is adjusted correctly. The strings might be too low. I can't say without having the guitar in my hands.
@andrewnarzary74625 жыл бұрын
@@HankCoffey thank you..
@HankCoffey5 жыл бұрын
@@andrewnarzary7462 no problem, if you filed the saddle and made the strings too low, you can put a thin shim in the slot underneath the saddle to bring the strings back up a little.

@@HankCoffey I'm kinda confused whats wrong with my guitar...I have never repaired one...the actions pretty high tho.. but then the 2nd fret's buzzing....
@HankCoffey5 жыл бұрын
@@andrewnarzary7462 it's either the truss rod adjustment or a high fret.

Ian Smith thanks Ian, I was playing pretty hard... So there may be a little fret rattle. Most of the muted notes are from my palm. I'm used to electrics.
@happyg.4445 жыл бұрын
I had to shave an 1/8" off the bridge and "whittle" string trenches to get clearance. lol
@HankCoffey5 жыл бұрын
Wow, yeah if the truss rod in the neck was adjusted correctly, and you can't go low enough on the saddle, the only other option is remove and re-set the neck. Or whittle trenches I guess. lol

So, like, where in "Animal House" John Belushi grabs the guitar and smashes it, in this video, he grabs the guitar, lowers the saddle bridge, then rocks out with it for 10 minutes! Badass!

Will putting a capo start the buzzing?
@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
Start buzzing?
@goharkhan26276 жыл бұрын
Yeah like do the strings hit the fret board and make the buzzing sound when you use capo? As the strings are now closer to the fretboard?
@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
@@goharkhan2627 it depends on how hard you play. If you play hard you'll get fret rattle. As with any guitar that doesn't have high action.

Aaron Ingram no, but if you use the metric system, ignore my measurements. I did the conversion wrong. USA uses the imperial system. Those numbers are correct.

Why would a factory send out a guitar with the action so high.
@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. They do all the time.
@mohdnoorhassan30836 жыл бұрын
Im afraid if its too low, the vibration of strings will hit the unwanted frets and create buzzing sounds like ughhh~ no no
@HankCoffey6 жыл бұрын
mohd noor hassan that's why you have to be real careful. If you take too much off then the strings are too low. My metric measurements in this are totally wrong. The strings were about 8mm high. Not 1.5. Sorry.
