My stream schedule on Twitch is Monday 6:30PM PT, Wednesday 6:30PM PT, and Saturday morning around 10am PT.
www.twitch.tv/andyvnguyen
In this video, I finally explain my method of opening and lubing MX style keyboards switches. My method is to apply a very light layer of 205g0, which is my favorite lube for linear switches. I lube the bottom housing rails, the spring, and all parts of the stem. I do not typically lube the top housing. I film switches as needed.
**IMPORTANT**
When working with Krytox, it is highly recommended to use gloves. It is non water soluable and is horrible for your health, as it contains PTFE and PFCs in is chemical makeup. The research for this is new, so it's still developing. We need to remember that this is not a toy, but rather an industrial grade compound. Use gloves, don't be messy, and dispose of the gloves after. That way, you can get straight to eating chicken wings post lubing without any concerns.
Here is the safety data sheet for Krytox 205g0
p11.secure.hostingprod.com/@site.skygeek.com/ssl/MSDS/dupont-lubricants-grease-gpl-205-8-oz-tube-gpl205-8oz.pdf#jmui=f%3A213%3A305419896%3AbDJykLECGicX%2C%2B0%2B%40PXn%2BF.m

I've been opening my switches using straight-tipped tweezers. Just put one tweezer prong under each tab on both sides of the switch, then gently lift until they rise just enough to release. Works much better than a screwdriver because you can undo both tabs on a side at once evenly.

Any recommendations for silencing the switch top-out noise (the clack made by the upstroke)? I know the films can help reduce it to a certain degree, as well as lubing the top of the stem where it hits the top housing. I'm trying to research all possible ways I can make my keyboard quieter, the main issue being the top-out noise. But I'm not about to buy new silent switches haha, just experimenting with modding. So, I just lube switches. And I tried to use a light amount maybe a little more than what you showed. And the brush felt dry when lubing the bottom housing, so I added a bit more. Quick question, when you lube the springs, why so you only lube the top and bottom, not the whole spring?
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 3 жыл бұрын
When you're using grease, just the top/bottom is enough to stop the pinging. With oil you can bag lube the whole thing. There's diminishing returns if you are brushing grease onto the entire spring.

Is it okay to lube springs with 205g0? I've had people tell me that it's bad and that it's better to use 105 or a 1:1 mix of the two. Is this true? Or does this only apply to bag-lubing?
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 3 жыл бұрын
I brush lube with 205g0 all of the time. Using oil and bag lubing is faster. I find brushing with 205g0 completely eliminates all possibly ping even if you slam the switch. Bag lubing with oil leaves just a bit of ping left.. but that ping is only heard if you put the switch in your ear and slam the stem.
@christophersmith8028
@christophersmith8028 3 жыл бұрын
Newer to the hobby, but have recently been playing with some durock pom linears and 205g0, and have been asking myself the same question on bag lubing with 105, or brushing with the 205g0. From what I’ve read on forums and seen from this and Taehas lubing video, brushing with the lube you’re already using is far superior. It’s more cost effective, doesn’t waste nearly as much, and the thicker lube being applied directly to the pinging spots, which seem to be the coiled ends of the spring, seems to be the best method. The thinner lube just like when placed in the bag will over time work it’s way off your spring and into a small puddle in the bottom housing. I had great results with sound and feel using relative the same method as this video. Cheers, and happy modding!

Best to use gloves.. but primarily don’t touch them directly on skin if you don’t have to and wash your hands after.

Many components like this made of some type of plastic or nylon are non lubricated for a reason. As soon as you add a lubricant to them, you create an attractant for dust. Then they will start to bind as the dust builds up.
@TranquilMarmot
@TranquilMarmot 2 жыл бұрын
Most switches are sealed when closed. I know a lot are IP56 rated, which means they will not let in dust.
@timtaylor8557

@@TranquilMarmot IP56 seems to be quite the oddity. Protection from powerful jets of water from any direction and yet only partial dust protection??? This makes no sense to me.

A better method when using a screw driver, just open it in between the legs... it’s less work and can help when opening switches. Because of this method a, I was able to open a freaking switch using the opposite side of a brush.
