Thanks for this video! I'm doing this right now with Gateron Silent Whites. Each time you mentioned being able to see the whiteness of the lube on the switch, I cried a little inside. I quickly learned to feel thickness of what I applied with my brush and use a sweeping motion to pull off excess to use somewhere else. Also, with Silent switches, they have little bumpers on both sides of the stems. I've read that it's not good to apply lube to these as they can come off if you do. Also for the springs, I am 100% using the bag method, but I swapped out the grease for a PTFE lubricant (3-in-one that I found at Lowes is working well thought Super Lube is usually what's recommended). The only downside to shaking them in a bag is the springs getting tangled. Pulling them apart when they're greasy is kind of a pain, but I like the result so I'm dealing with it. And those little stations are not worth it. I got one and have just spent an hour breaking apart 30 switches on it, only to undo it into piles of components. xD

This was a very thorough explanation of why you lube certain parts of the switch. Thank you for this super thoughtful video! There are alternatives that I have found that pretty much cover the same areas of the switch when it comes to lubing. For me personally, I do not like messing with the stems at all because all of the other subsequent lube application on the bottom housing, spring and even top housing covers this. I don't like messing with stems as it is super time consuming and I feel like it is redundant for a lot of it's commonly lubed areas. For example, the pole of the stem can be taken care of by lubing the inside the pole on the bottom housing. Lubing the rails of the bottom housing should be more than enough for where it comes into contact with the stem as it slides up and down. To me, lubing the sides of the stem is kind of like double lubing considering the rails on the bottom housing was already lubed. As for the front and back of the stem, I just do a quick swipe on the top housing areas before the final reassembly (this is the only real extra step when forgoing lube on the stem, but it is super quick). We have to remember that all of the lube applied gets MESSY inside of the switch and just displaces itself after just minor usage. So less is definitely more. Your spring example is what I try to preach to everyone, but people don't seem to understand what I mean. The top and bottoms of the spring are the relevant points of contact for spring ping issues. People put so much lube on their springs yet fail to rectify their ping issues - looking at you, bag-lubed with 105 oil. 205g0 lube applied around the bottom housing pole will take care of any scratchiness or points of friction on the inside of the spring when actuating. I am not a huge fan of 105 oil since that will just eventually run off to the bottom of your switch housing because of how thin it is. It doesn't help when you are constantly banging away at those springs when using them...it pretty much just shakes that 105 off over time. The leaf spring lube is excellent and I do that myself! But yeah, it is all preference and what everyone finds to be their best method!
@kjhkth Жыл бұрын
What do you think about the lubrication of stem posts? For many switches, lubricating the shaft of the stem provides a smoother feel. However, this did not last long and turned into a stiff hitting feeling.
