I am a physics teacher and I know the reason for the weak magnetization that I got and the reason is a way to loosen the wire around the screwdriver. You wrapped the wire and then wrapped another layer on top of the first and this is the error. To make one coil, and another solution. If you finish winding the first coil, go back with the wire straight over the first coil to the beginning of the first coil, then start winding the wire to give two coils with the same direction. Thank you for your effort.
@pouncerminned8633 жыл бұрын
are you saying once you finish the first coil, make a second one starting where you started the first one? in this video it shows first coil, then starting new coil at location where the first one ended?
@wingerrrrrrrrr3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter if you wind the second layer from the tip to the handle vs handle to tip, as long as it's around in the same direction you started with, either clockwise or counterclockwise. The magnetic flux will still get generated in the same direction.

A buddy was talking about buying a magnetized or magnetize he screwdrivers today by rubbing them on a magnet. I didn’t get a chance to tell him about how I had seen done probably about 59 years ago. I was not sure whether the wire still had the insulated covering on it or not. Glad I came across this video. I have some I need to magnetize myself.

Yep, I learned the trick in junior-high. The science curriculum included mandatory science fair projects, every student had to do one in class (each year grade 6 thru 8), and could voluntarily enter his/her project into the actual science fair competition afterward. One year, I did electromagnets. I just used Bell wire and a piece of round solid stock, and one of the old 6v lantern batteries (the rectangular ones that had screw terminals). My Dad was the "supplier" of my equipment. I had to read books and encyclopedia(s) to get the theory and wording, but he taught the practical end of it. Also learned how to use an existing magnet to either temporarily or permanently magnetize screwdrivers. Sometimes, it's a darn valuable thing to be able to have control over the screw or bolt down in the worst hard-to-reach place. I do have a bench battery, and will now try your double-wrap method, because I've never done it that way before. Has winter's icy grip eased off in your neck of the woods yet? Had a few "easy" days up here where it warmed up to around the 20's, and dumped more snow on us.

Thanks Gordon great video, I remember doing this middle school with smaller batteries but our results didn't last very long. Will the usage of the 12v battery keep the magnetism on the screw driver forever, or how long can we expect the magnetism to keep its hold? Thanks again for any insight you can provide here towards my question, cool channel.

Just take a regular magnet. Slide it down the screwdriver away from the handle to the tip about 8-12 times. THEN so how magnetic it is, much stronger and lasts up to 4 years.

I was standing on a roof last month in an unnatural position trying to get some sheet metal screws in place (hex head #8's) with a 1/4" socket adapter. Neither the socket adapter or the socket itself was magnetized of course. (almost in tears after dropping multiple screws, never to be seen again, thinking, "I wished I had tried harder in school) I'm going to try this with the adapter and see if I can get the sheet metal screw to stay somewhat in place in the socket. (With my luck, which is none, the screws are some type of alloy that doesn't attract to magnets...) But thank you for the video. I've got a bunch of ultra small screwdrivers for my RC airplane addiction that I'd love to have magnetized. Some of the screws are the size of a grain of rice. (They sell magnetized small screwdrivers, but what's the fun in that when you have a battery, 12-16 gauge wire and a fire extinguisher?)

As the current flows through the wire it produces magnetic induction. It is not a lasting solution as the electrons discharge over the time and screwdrivers lose their magnetic properties.

Can you help my sir? I have problem . I have R terminal starter selenoid delco remy type My car is old opel gm based engin from the 80s that thing has gm ignition module 4 pin and induction triger on distributor I do have singel hei coil E core type I also have positive linear voltage regulator in my dash bord suposedly that thing controls voltage going to my coil but I want to use that R terminal for voltage bypass on start up engin when its cold. I cant my fuse pop for dashboard how do I bypass this problem It apeares to by polarity problem based. I did once start my car instead of s terminal I acidentaly put the R terminal wire my car starter fine even tought slovly cranking I experianced like some sort of bether fuel economy even tought I dont know why? So I dont understand what is hapening? I did use some diode and peace of wire and tried to use that R terminal and diferent places on my ignition coil I actualy have 4 independent pins on my E cory type ignition coil so I dont understand what hinders my to use that selenoid? Is my 4 pin gm ignition module polarity senzitibe ore my dashboard regulator? How can I make my self non polarity sensitive triger module ?
@57bagre2 жыл бұрын
As I remember, that R terminal on the solenoid was used as a ballast resistor or maybe to bypass an integrated resistor for the old points and condenser system because the starter could rob too much power from the ignition system on cold starting, the ignition ran on lower power full time but would run on full power while cranking the starter, if you ran the ignition full time on full power it would burn out the points and overheat the coil prematurely. I would just run your system the way the engineers designed it.

You can also plug it into a socket, but it’ll trip the breaker

That’s really cool. Is it possible to do the same thing with sockets? That would be really useful on a 1/4 drive for taking off panels.
@57bagre3 жыл бұрын
sure they will magnetize but only very small sockets will hold on to a bolt. I recommend using a piece of electric tape around the edge of the socket just barely on the edge of the bolt so as not to pinch the tape under the head of the bolt and in some cases continue the tape on up the socket extension a couple turns so you don't pull the extension out of the socket when the bolt is tight. I also sometimes just pack a little sticky grease in the socket to glue the bolt in.

do it again with a couple more wraps of wire or just stick a small magnet on the side of your socket when you're using it if you have room to do so, the socket will conduct the magnetic field and help to hold the nut. Sometimes I stuff grease in a socket to hold a nut or bolt.

what he is doing is not recomended . that is an acid battery and sparking near a car battery is not a good thing to do because they can and have exploded from sparks which is why you connect the ground last to a metal part of the car and not the battery. That is to avoid the danger of igniting the hydrogen gas that acid and led batteries give off.. The best and easiest way is to take a fairly good magnet , say one frofm anold tube TV, and just let the screw driver lay on it. Or a nother way is to line up one end towards north and of course the the onther end is south then hit the screwdriver in the middle a couple time fairly hard.
