A lot of people ask what goes into keeping a paramotor running. This is the start of a series where I will show every bit of maintenance done on my Scout. Hit that like button if you dig it!

A&P here. Torque check vs Retorque. A torque check simply mean checking the torque without loosening the fastener first. If it moves before the wrench clicks, you recheck again after whatever the hour interval was for the inspection. For retorques, you loosen the fastener first, then torque it down. If you perform a retorque when a torque check is what is actually called out, then you would be required to perform a new torque check after hour interval was met. Probably wouldn't make much of a difference anyway but technically, there is a difference between the two procedures. I love the videos and it makes my day when I see a new one posted!

I have to admit T, that you're mostly to blame for my addiction. Can't get enough. Though new to PPG, motors are old hat. So a suggestion when torquing, especially a head, is to creep up on it. Mine requires 120 in/lbs, so I go snug, 60, 80, 100 then 120. Sorry, it's the Tool & Die maker in me. Just a thought. Keep 'em coming!!!

Thanks for this video! I fly a Scout and am currently trying to find the brass nozzle on the fuel inlet on the carb. My pull start got sucked into my prop 15 mins into a flight a few weeks back. That somehow ripped out my fuel line. Had my first engine out and it was pretty sketch. Was 1,400 ft over a forest and found a golf course about half a mile away to land at. Love your channel and what you add to the sport man!

OMG!!! That could have been a serious accident, if the gaz caught in fire. Good you're still here to tell us this story. But that's part of the risk. No risk no fun! :) I want one of these machines it would be a dream comes true. But I would add a thin metal plate on the fuel tank, and I would like to have a flexible metalic fuel line. I think the worst accident that may happen, is the fuel tank catching in fire.

Hey Tucker, I just love the vids. Little more info on checking torque, I haven't read all the comments so if it's a repeat, sorry. When you have loose bolts that require being torqued don't torque them to the stated value in one shot. If the value is 12ft/pds, go around all the bolts to maybe 8 or 9 pounds first. Then finish at your assigned value wich was 11.8 as you stated. Rounding it up to 12 won't hurt a thing. Then what John Janis said is correct. Wee would have to do this on almost 400 1/4 -28 ss 12 point aircraft bolts with lockouts on the combust or housing on aircraft engines. Takes forever....

The part at 5:40 terrifies me a little lmao, I still lowkey have 2stroke "ptsd" after my nitro car would rev to about 1/3 throttle on idle after going full throttle. shit was terrifying, especially since it didn't even want to stop unless I yank the fuel lines out 😂😂

Gonna be watchin' ya buddy. I bought a Plus to replace my Airmax 220, and mounted it on my Rhino Cage with Leon Whacker's Original Trike from Skycruiser. Man, I love this new motor. But, I've got to get used to the Vittorazi Throttle. I hit the kill switch by accident and dislocated my shoulder trying to start it while I was in the air. The Airmax had an e-start, so that was the first time I'd tried it. I have a lot to learn. Anyways, I'll be watchin'. Looks like you'll stay just ahead of me in the maintenance schedule. BTW, if you wanna try my Charlie's Soap products, just say the word. I'll shoot you some freebies.

Hey Tucker! New viewer here. Saw your spark plug and wanted to bring to your attention a higher level of soot on the plug. May be the gas, may be just a new motor, but I'd put another spark plug in and take pictures. Send them off to Scout for verification. A new spark plug is cheap insurance. Good luck and let us know what Scout says if you send it in!

Enjoyed the video. At least I learned something about small engine diagnostics. Now I understand why my lawn mower kept dying. LOL. By the way, is it even feasible to add a muffler to a paramotor, kind of like what the police use on some of their motorcycles? Thanks, and keep up the great works! :)

Tucker Gott weren't you running a richer gas mixture for the first few hours? I think I recall you mentioning that when you did the break-in vid in your driveway. If so, that could explain a slightly-darker-than-normal plug this early on.

FlyingPooch Exactly. The first 4 gallons are mixed 30:1.
@peterihoy4908
@peterihoy4908 7 жыл бұрын
Definitely too rich, that said, running too rich is safer for the motor/piston than too lean (can burn a hole in the piston). You spend a lot of time on idle, especially before landing, so the plug colour is showing the mixture it was last running on, idle jet, and not Main Jet. When checking mixtures on 2 stroke m/bikes we used to perform a "Plug Chop" to determine Main Jet mixtures. Run the bike flat-out, under load, on a long stretch of road. Hit the "Kill Switch" and coast to a stop, then check the colour. The main mixture setting is far more relevant as this is when the motor is under load and most likely for damage to occur (adjusted by needle position and or main jet size. unlikely to be an issue in your case as you motor is specifically tuned for this use, we were tuning for extreme use). Take it up and run flat-out for a while before killing the motor and gliding down, then check the colour. This will be a better indication. Peter.

Thanks for the video! I recently did a paramotor course a few months ago, I'm currently deciding whether to make the purchase and get a paramotor (or just stick to paragliding). One thing that is holding me back is how hard it is to do the maintenance, you make it look very easy here but is this something you can learn on your own? furthermore, what is the running cost of maintenance? how much can i expect to need to spend every 10 hours or so on new parts etc? Any help from any more experienced pilot would be great. I would love to get into the sport but not sure if I want to spend $1000s every 10 hours of flying time....thanks!

When fueling up, I think I remember in another video you said that you use gas station premium pump gas. Where you live do they put ethanol in the fuel? If so, does it cause any extra maintenance problems for you? I know out here in California we have a large amount of ethanol added to our pump gas, and it just kills my 2-stroke lawn equipment.

The pop after killing the engine can be an indicator of carbon buildup. High compression engines with high octane fuel can be prone to this. For break in you can a higher oil to fuel mixture. Like that's the cause for the dark plug. if its correct it should burn off.
@TuckerGott
@TuckerGott 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly, it's 30:1 on break in and 40:1 after. Thats why I wasn't too concerned about the darkish plug.

Suggestion on torquing the head bolts. Go around a few times, by torquing bolt #2-4 it can cause #1 to become looser. Ideally you continue to go around the bolts until none of them turn, they all just click.

I am a Marine tech by trade own and operate my own marine repair shop. I used to also be an Auto Tech. That spark plug you pulled out has excessive fuel deposits on it your engine is getting too much raw fuel . The black deposits you have on the plug is unburned fuel . Your carb is jetted to rich. Needs a smaller jet. The raw unburned fuel will start accumulating carbon on top of your piston and into your combustion chamber if the deposits get thick enough on the piston it could cause detonation from pre ignition and blow a hole in your piston. The proper A/F ratio on your plug will be a light grey color. The wrong jetting will also cause excessive fuel consumption on your engine and performance loss from excessive fuel going into your combustion chamber. The raw unburned fuel will also start gumming up your engine internally with carbon deposits from excessive fuel Since your engine is under warranty contact your rep and please get this resolved. You probably don't read any of these post when the You tubers get famous they never read replies nor reply to your post. Please get your fuel system serviced and repaired. If they tell you black soot on your plug is normal I would find another manufacturer to get my engines from. That is not normal . When you get the system resolved give the engine a fresh tune up don't use that carbon up spark plug I hope you read this post it could save your life.
