Excellent video. I'd love to see another of you maintaining the freshwater system -- draining the antifreeze, cleaning the exchanger, o-rings, and refilling antifreeze.

Hello and thanks so much for a very helpful vlog. Just this week I was bringing my boat back to the mooring and noticed some steam issuing from the exhaust. Your sequence of checks will help me determine (hopefully) where the problem lies - either in the sea water intake (blocked?), strainer or pump (impeller). Regards Gerard

Great video! I would point out that the hose coming off the strainer is not pushed home and there is 3/8" of pipe exposed 12:37. That will be a very unhappy diesel if that hose pops off starving it of coolant. A 2 minute job to undo the clamp, push the hose home and retighten.
@littlewhiteyachtmaintenanc45657 жыл бұрын
Thanks hadn't noticed that, I suspect it been like that for a long time, since before I owned the boat, but looks like you've found another job for me.... not that the lists isn't long enough already!. :-)

The likelihood of failure is low, but it's one of those things that weakens the overall system and takes nothing to fix. It's often another failure that taxes that weakness. Imagine a failing motor mount, engine vibrates more and then pop.(I have an active imagination.:-) )

Hi, quick question: You mentioned @11:55 that the jubilee clamps have to fit well. In the event of the fittings breaking off, wouldn't it just be a matter to turn the seacock closed? Or were you referring when under-way?
@Kit2Canada5 жыл бұрын
You know Murphy’s Law - well I bought a former charter boat as it was a “deal” (never again). One of the clamps on the bilge-pump had corroded through and water was just bubbling around when I arrived on the boat for a quick check as I do each week. Stuff happens on boats and all you can do is mitigate
@ztumtzum55087 жыл бұрын
Would the boat not sink as per your diagramme at 8:54? I think the exhaust should vent above the waterline.
@littlewhiteyachtmaintenanc45657 жыл бұрын
Yes, exhaust should have been drawn above the water line. Although it is not uncommon for the outlet to duck under the water on a sail boat, the positive pressure of the exhaust preventing water entering the exhaust pipe.

After a while, when it gets hot, the water comes out a little and it is hot. Is the problem with the pump or is the valve damaged? Is the cylinder head gasket damaged?
@voltairegoethe7 жыл бұрын
thank you - thorough/clear/concise question - is the strainer [to be most effective] mounted just below the water line?
@littlewhiteyachtmaintenanc45657 жыл бұрын
The water strainer is best fitted above the waterline, so no water can enter the boat when the seacock is not closed while opening the filter.

Good video. Ever replaced the exhaust elbow gasket? I have some issues getting the bolts out, 1 broken head and 1 seized😬 on my beta 14.
@littlewhiteyachtmaintenanc45657 жыл бұрын
No sorry mate I've never removed the exhaust elbow. I'd imagine that a combination of the wet exhaust and heat may well seize the bolts in this area. As with all seized bolts, heat and penetrating oil often helps.
@lazydays74707 жыл бұрын
You might consider running the engine to full temperature which may reduce the friction on the bolts as the metal around the bolt expands slightly. The bolts will also expand but it may be less and also the heat may break the friction lock the metal has on the bolts. You may want to apply some additional heat with a propane torch. Be very careful using a torch in that area due to flammables close by. Keep a large fire extinguisher close by. If this works then once the bolts are out and the elbow is removed you can continue while the engine is hot and remove the bolt with the missing head using a small pipe wrench.

@koos55486 жыл бұрын
In depth video, but please get the details right first. Just a few items that caught my i at first glance Seacock shows signs of dezincification (green), meaning it is brass instead bronze or cr messing and can tear off at any moment. Basically making your vessel a timebomb to sink. Adding a backinplate would be even better. Hose clamps should be of te closed type. These are prone to tearing. Hose on the strainer is not pushed all the way up on the connector. I saw another hose connect to a copper tube without a connector.
@littlewhiteyachtmaintenanc45656 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback, as with any 30 year old boat many things are not prefect. I've not mentioned dezincification in the video as the field is complex and at little contentious. But I'd agree with you that diligence of inspection of seacock and through hull fittings is important. As for hose clamps.. personally I prefer the open type hose clamps, I think they slip less, than the closed type. But as with anything quality is the important thing here. My strainer hose has now been pushed home, good spot!

That’s not right. The “tank” of the heat exchanger is the fresh water and the “raw” water is pumped through the bundle of tubes.
