Excellent video! Funny (?) story: I rebuilt the carb on my '69 Beetle (pre-Internet) and I was very proud of myself. But, the car drove very poorly, and I thought for sure I had broken something. After a lot of hand-wringing, I noticed the vacuum advance hose was not connected to the carb (frankly, I did not know what the vacuum advance was or what it did). So, I plugged it in and PRESTO! the car ran like a champ. Sigh.... another **&%@ learning experience!! :)

A great video as always. One thing I would like to add is I had a problem with the exterior of my cap. Where the clips engaged the cap there was a slight deterioration. I don't know why but when the car got warm it would start to miss. This drove me crazy, because I couldn't find the problem. So also check the outside of the cap. It was a relatively new cap
@SladesVWBeetle7 ай бұрын
Oh yes, absolutely! That’s why I brought up checking for cracks on the outside. I know a lot of people ignore this stuff, or sometimes we just don’t literally realize what’s going wrong. I still think the quality was much better years ago with some of the parts.

One other thing to think about. I had a vacuum distributor that had the drive that sits in the drive gear installed backward. So it might not be the gear in the case. It could be the new distributor you have needs that part on the bottom flipped 180°

When I bought my 72 super beetle the vacuum lines were connected all wrong? I don’t know how they got it to run! The main reason I got such a good deal is someone had all the wires backwards on the fuse block (if you can read the schematic right side up, then it’s upside down!!!!) also the curved connector on the steering column was on offset by one pin! So look out for that! Thanks for the great video full of info, as usual!

the previous owner of my bug out the distributor in backwards. I haven't broken down to make it right, but i keep it in mind when putting the wires on. my distributor is missing that felt pad that you pointed out in the shaft. what purpose does that felt pad serve?
@SladesVWBeetle7 ай бұрын
Since you’re aware of it, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Just as long as the wires are in the proper position.. The felt pad under the rotor arm that you put one or two drops of oil on at every service, to keep the advance mechanism lubed just like you do with a SVDA
