There's just something so therapeutic and satisfying in adjusting valves, changing oil, and performing routine maintenance.

That's one of the best vids I have seen on adjusting VW valves. I like how the dist can be pulled without losing the timing. These air cooled motors are really growing on me. When you say don't get silly on me now......I feel like it's me talking to my son 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The timing of this video is perfect. I’m getting ready to go in and adjust my valves. It’s not really all that noisy I’m just double checking them while mainly doing a head inspection. Thanks Slade!

Excellent Illustration, As you mentioned that this was for illustration and out of the car. I know when I had to adjust my valves, while in the car, I put the box end over the screwdriver, so it was always in the area when ready to tighten. Never knew they had a special tool like you showed. Maybe it wasn't invented, yet. It always seemed that lying on your back and when reaching for the wrench, I would move the screw. Good times.

Thanks Dog! I’ll do one in the car, but I took advantage of the easy camera angles.

Great information!!! Have you thought about doing a video adjusting the valves on one of the later model type 4 engines from a bay bus with hydraulic lifters? I think the community would appreciate it. 👍🏻

Awesome video friend. This is something that every single air-cooled engine owner MUST know how to do! Maybe could have covered some of the reason(s) that this is an important thing to do. Just a suggestion. NOT telling you what to do by any means.

Opinion! I’ve had my 63 bug for 25yrs. Buy some valve cover gaskets before you start. It’s been a while since a valve adjustment has been done that’s why your here. A simple job can go to hell fast and gaskets are you need. There cheap and most auto parts store will have them or can get them today.

I was taught to adjust valves always on a warm engine. I know you couldn't run this one because of the demonstration.
@SladesVWBeetle2 жыл бұрын
No!! I believe you’re supposed to do it on an cold motor that has sat overnight.

I believe the different pushrod materials also expand differently as the engine heats up and requires different gapping.

My distributor does not have the vacuum advance, it is a 1973 super beetle,?, great video. I think I need to get a new distributor 😩
@SladesVWBeetle2 жыл бұрын
You don’t need a new distributor, you just have a mechanical advance one. It just means you’re number one is set to a different position

I noticed that I’m having a problem with a couple of my valves continually adjusting. I have all new rockers and nuts and screws but yet it seems like every time I go out and run a little bit it’s ticking on cylinder three.
@VolksStokes2 жыл бұрын
Question: I'm re-installing entire rocker arm assembly onto those two studs inside heads. Online it says torque specs is 14-22 ftlb but when i get to 8ftlb it feels really tight and then its so tight that i cant even rotate flywheel with my hands. I know you avoid/dislike giving out torque specs but what spec do you tighten your rocker arms to? Maybe im reading a wrong part?
@WestGeorgiaAirCooled2 жыл бұрын
Are you tourqing in order? Need to do it in the order at 8, then 22 is what I do. You do your own though of course. 😊
@VolksStokes2 жыл бұрын
@@WestGeorgiaAirCooled Hi and thanks for responding. I later realized I had to loosen up the valve adjustment screws... and that helped. Now I torqued them to 18ftlbd and flywheel moves free as well
@roma8111 Жыл бұрын
45 years ago had a air cooled bug & always gave #3 exhaust valve 1 thousand extra gap because oil cooler blocks air flow & the extra gap let’s the valve set on it’s seat & transfer a little more heat to the head Any truth to this , it never hurt anything
