I can't see HIGNFY ever working in the US. A key feature of it in the UK is that it is politically neutral and makes fun of politicians on both sides equally. Political neutrality just isn't a thing in the US. I've spoken to Americans that refuse to even believe it is possible. An American version of HIGNFY would either need to be on one side of the political aisle or it would need to have a team captain from each side. Either way, that's a completely different show to HIGNFY.

Generally, though, everyone thinks it is biased against their position. You mention that people on the left won't notice the leftward bias, but you have missed that people on the right (including you, I'm guessing) also don't notice when it has a rightward bias.

So glad you mentioned Inside No 9, its just brilliant and pulls career best performances from people involved. One of the most moving episodes was the 12 Days Of Christine, Sheridan Smith gave a brilliantly, heartbreaking performance. It's also audacious, look at the Quiz show episode in the last series. I like to think I'm quite tv literate but it had me momentarily fooled because it was played so straight initially. Of course what got me to stick with it was the realisation that 9pm was a weird time to launch something which was so obviously more suited to the afternoon. All the publicity beforehand was trailing a spoof On The Buses parody which they'd even made a poster for. I'm sure there were many people around the country choking on their tea after the 'explosive' finale. This is supposed to be the final series and it deserves to be in the pantheon of classic tv.

Interesting side note, United Artists was a studio founded by actor/directors Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks Sr. , Charlie Chaplin and DW Griffith who, if my memory of university film studies was correct, wanted more creative control over the films that were being made, and star salaries than MGM, Paramount, & Warners were providing.

I'd argue we have similar panel type shows that have worked in the US. The problem with a lot of the big UK ones being transferred over to the US, like WILTY or Taskmaster, is that they play on smaller networks with small budgets. To even get recognizable names or comics to do either of them, they really need to be on Fox, CBS, ABC, or NBC. The whole point of panel shows is getting recognizable names to draw people in and that can't happen on small networks. Again, panel shows can work here. For example, I'd say the recent version of To Tell the Truth is a good example. It was on a big network where you could decent names for every episode. The issue is getting airtime on those big networks because the time is so valuable. Ideally, they would be able to run a show like Taskmaster or WILTY in the summer where more variety and less sitcoms already happen. I actually think them being on in the summer would be perfect to get people to watch.

I disagree. They're better off on small networks. Big celebrity names don't matter. Comedians matter. Comedians connected to the comedy scene will always get their friends big and small. I think panel shows could thrive somewhere like IFC where they would be made for the people who enjoy it. Network TV ruins it and kills creativity in trying to make it mainstream.

@@nicolasviaje7159 That makes no sense. You can't even get half recognizable or any funny comedians on such small networks. Any comedian that's funny or recognizable is trying to do their own tv series or movie and has no time for small networks. Which leaves you with the bottom of the barrel comedians. All in all, if we want panel shows to succeed like they do in the UK, then we need to have them air on big networks in primetime hours like the UK. Anything else we produce shows like US WILTY and US Taskmaster that came and went without anyone noticing.

I don't buy the arguments that panel shows can't work in the US. _Dropout, Smosh,_ and _After Midnight_ do similar things online which are often funny. And there are American guests who fit in well on UK panel shows. But whenever UK panels shows are rebooted in the US, they just seem to pick people with the wrong sense of humour. You need people who are great at improv, but with a droll wit rather than being overly theatrical.

I know of 1 UK style HIGNFY panel show in the US and that's on Radio "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me". Even that seem to be a bit "as you heard it in the hall with a couple of pickups" - tight and home for tea. - Quite a few years ago now Simon Amstell was on "Wait Wait" and he was a bit much for their delicate sensibilities. - Basically he was just riffing and giving edit options and I think I remember later they thought he was wild and "out of control" and referenced his appearance a number of times afterwards.

Minor correction: Life on Mars was adapted by ABC for 1 season - it was kind of what you would expect as being a bit dumbed down.. the ending in particular was ridiculous in comparison to the BBC version. It did star Harvey Keitel though :)

I like the episodes in genera, especially when you pull back the curtain on what goes into the day to day on tv shows and movies, but the hosts seem abit condescending about entertainment they see as ‘low brow’, especially Miriam. Makes her come off as pretentious, rude and abit snobby.

I just don't think that a trio of presenter and team captains has been discovered that are talented enough to make a hit panel show in the states. As an example, if they did a version of have i got news for you with Jon Stewart and John Oliver as captains and someone like Craig Ferguson or even Jimmy Carr as host,would that have a chance of working? If that didn't work than i don't think anything could get them watching. It takes a very special kind of quick wit to make a panel show work and American Comedians don't seem to have it. They are great stand up comedians tho.

The new @Midnight program on CBS is a good reintroduction of panel shows to the US market. It's a bit like Mock The Week, if MTW had no regular panelists and no satire or topical subjects. They even had Nish Kumar on. I do hope HIGNFYUS has a few UK comics on to set the correct tone. Maybe Zaltzman. Or even Oliver.

I've had the misfortune to see a US WILTY episode - or rather half of one, because it was so toe-curlingly awful IMHO, that I couldn't bear to watch it all. Richard nailed it: the Americans are obsessed with scoring points and who is winning - which entirely misses the point. There was one episode of HIGNY where scores mattered for the comedy: the week when Paul and the tub of lard won.

Americans just don’t get banter. The late night shows are a perfect example - the sole banter they have (between the host and the guests) is scripted. The stories they tell are obviously cleared in advance, the jokes are scripted. We like our humour on the screen, Americans like it coming out of the screen directed at them. Brits appreciate the wit and intelligence of comedy - the most popular us comedy shows Cheers Fraser Seinfeld etc - and usually downtrodden characters.

Question: How much of their own material do stand ups write. Obviously US late night shows are all scripted, in the UK for example, how much of 8 out of 10 cats does Jimmy Carr write? And how much of his own stand up material that he performs on tour does he write

Most panel shows have a team of writers coming up with links, monologues and skits. If you look at the credits of many of them you will see the credit "Programme Associates" and a list of names - these are the writers. The reason for the slightly odd credit is because it was realised in the very early days of panel shows on TV (Have I Got News and Whose Line in particular) that having "written by" in the credits confused the audience - it suggested that all the banter and improv was scripted. So "Programme Associates" is a much less controversial credit. The only show of this type that doesn't use a team of writers (I think I'm right in saying) is Taskmaster, which is solely written by Alex Horne. In answer to your question, Jimmy Carr is listed as a Programme Associate for Cats and Cats Does Countdown, along with a number of others. That's not to say that everything he (or indeed anyone hosting a panel show) says is scripted - obviously there is a large amount of unscripted banter, too. In terms of his stand up, I can't find anything to suggest he employs additional writers. It's incredibly rare for a stand up to not solely write their own material, although there are and have been a few comedians who use(d) writing collaborators. (Jasper Carrott is a notable example of the latter, if you're old enough to remember him.)

with the americans and panel shows, I've lived abroad for many years and worked with lots of americans out here, and the thing about them is, they don't have banter, or rather, their banter skills are very very poor. A panel show works because its an extension of the kind of normal everyday humour that most british people do with their friends and colleagues, its more ingrained in our culture. Americans though just don't seem to be good at it

Ah Richard I really love your "Thursday Murder Club" books, I have all of them - but why spoil it putting them on film or tv with such miscasting? The characters are all brilliant, but Pierce Brosnan and Celia Imrie? They are NOT the people I have in my head as Ron and Joyce. Love Helen Mirren but that's not how Elizabeth looks in my head. I won't be watching either the movie or tv show. So sad. My question: why spoil a good book?

I think you should broaden your mind quite a bit. Firstly, the mental image you have of the characters aren't necessary what everone else have, and having an adaption will both bring in new people who haven't read the books and give a new version avid readers can see and enjoy (or hate if you'd like). That goes for every show or film getting adapted from a book, play or other media. The books aren't getting "spoiled" by there existing a film adaption, just as the childrens book The Hobbit wasn't ruined just because they made a completely unnecessary film trilogy (which to be fair earn the people involved money, and surely had fans that liked even those films). Again, what you see as miscasting and spoiling a good book just doesn't necessary mean the rest of the world think the same, in fact there are sure to be plenty of people that love to see Brosnan, Kingsley, Mirren and Imrie take on these roles.

Joyce needs to be a little old lady with a twinkle, and as much as I love Celia Imrie, an Anne Reid type actress would be closer to the image I have in my head. Ron needs someone street wise, brutish but loveable, maybe Gambon/Winston type. Ben kingsley is not a bad choice for Ibrahim...I had another actor in mind but for the life of me I can not bring his name up.That`s just my 2 pence...

To be honest I do not feel US comics do comedy for comedy stake. The UK comics will go for any form of comedy that is funny. No matter if that is stand up or panel. Yes, they want to further their career, but being funny in the environment is the most important thing. I always think American comedy is “look at me”, I am soo funny, whoop sort of delivery. It doesn’t come across as organic.

Every week on this show they gush over how awesome modern tv is, and full of talented people and hilarious shows. Why then does virtually everyone in the real world say it's shit all the time and most of the formats terrible also?

Many TV shows nowadays get terrible viewing figures, and the tired tropes come out: there's so many channels, nobody watches TV anymore, it's all viewed on mobiles etc.thia is usually an excuse because it's shit and that's the reason it's not watched. I think you should check were you get your input from. Where do you go to know what "virtually everyone" thinks about TV and formats? The most accurate measure most people use is viewing figures and the amount of content and buzz that is created in the wake of a TV program/film. These numbers are going down as viewership is spread across a lot more platforms, and people prefering streaming to cinema. But that doesn't mean people aren'tconsume entertainment and instead are outdoors doing some other activities.

As an American who loves HIGNFY I can’t imagine an American version working. I forced myself to sit through a couple episodes of the US version of Ghost. It was beyond dismal
