Just jumping in here with another celebrity that made it on both versions - Alex Horne. He was a civilian on Countdown before Taskmaster, and later would be on 8 out of 10 cats version. As for in America, a famous one would also be Kathy Najimi who was on $100,000 Pyramid and later be the celebrity guest on a couple reboots. (And I wish I could go through the laundry list of celebrities who were on game shows before making it big, but many weren't on a celebrity version of the same show.) Does Aaron Paul guesting on The Price is Right after appearing decades later, count?

I was recently watching an interview with Timothy Dalton where he was asked what he did to get in shape for his role as Bond, and he just said “I didn’t”. Compare that to Daniel Craig who had a complete physical transformation. And it’s not just about oh poor old actors having to go to the gym, it’s about the men and boys watching who think those bodies are normal and achievable for the average person without expensive and time consuming workout regimes (and probably also steroids or something similar).

On the subject of ending up on the cutting room floor. For the film Help! a scene was shot with the Beatles, Frankie Howerd and Wendy Richard. It just didn't work, the Beatles and Howerd didn't gel (and he took a dislike to them), so Richard Lester cut it from the film. Wendy Richard thought she would be invited to the world premiere, but was told on the day that her scene had been cut and there was no invite, she was gutted.

I van only agree about the actors thing. [Cue boring personal story]: I was an extra and we sat around for hours while rehearsals[?] and camera and lighting were worked out - because we had got into an old central London BBC building. Anyway, after my pale arm make-up started to fade, we finally filmed for about one minute twice. During which the lead actor made inexplicable noises - boom - just like that. He was great, we were silent. It took all day to set up the shot. My curiosity about film-making was satisfied

On the cooking type shows would it not be better to show where they have finished with decent amount of time left so that when you legitimately show someone panicking with a minute to go it will be genuinely stressful. As it is it’s just, yeah, ok, they clearly still have rice to boil and no time to do it in but next minute, oh look, it’s on the plate.
@philipellis70396 ай бұрын
Certainly they often show when someone has finished with a lot of time to go. This then helps explains any shots where they are helping other contestants or having a cup of tea in the background but also feeds in to the typical judge’s comments about not having done enough work. On a show like Masterchef you can spot the set up a mile away: “What might go wrong in this round John?” “The contestants might not be ambitious enough.” Terry has finished his pavlova with twenty minutes to go. “Terry your pavlova is okay but you weren’t ambitious enough, you could have done a lot more work in the time available.”
@siohmy6 ай бұрын
yeah, good point. The old “he’s trying to create a fusion of flavours which don’t seem to go together, I’m not sure they will.” “David, I’m not sure these combinations of flavours have worked.” I do agree they do sometimes show those who’ve finished early and they often, perhaps necessarily, show bakers on bake off sitting around while their creation, well, bakes. But they always have at least one person who pretty much runs out of time which may be true but can’t believe it’s always the case.
@philipellis70396 ай бұрын
@@siohmy they certainly like to ramp up the jeopardy element of it. One of the things I like about Richard Osman on House of Games is that he will point out when there is basically no jeopardy left (although playing for a onesie or a fondue set the stakes aren’t particularly high).
