After lots of research, this is the way I learned to make percussion caps for my cap lock rifle.

Use tweezers to handle the caps. I use any aluminum can I can get hold of. Beer, soda, seltzer and flavored waters. Heck I've even been known to use 'energy drinks.' I bought into the primer mix kit and haven't used the caps yet, I have them, but haven't loaded with them yet. The mix and the caps are both corrosive, so 6 of one or half a dozen of the other. Currently looking for places to store formed cups, cut strips, empty cans and stacks of flat aluminum can panels. Oh, and assembled primer caps. Enjoyed your video. Next project is making black powder, since it is hard to acquire in this area.

Gun powder is hard to get here too. I ordered all the stuff to make my own black powder from dudaenergy.com check them out. It's the cheapest bulk you will find I promise. Thanks for watching. I thought about maybe using some 3lb flashing to see if it would work for caps as well.

I usually buy percussion caps in July because I’ve heard that CCI tools up for percussion cap production in late April early May and are on the shelves in July. I usually buy a bunch in July. I’m a middle school principal and former history teacher. When the 8th grade history class is learning about the civil war I will arrange a field trip to my grandparents farm to demonstrate my 1861 Springfield rifle musket to the students and let them load and shoot under supervision. I do this for other school’s history classes as well so I use a lot of percussion caps a year. Hopefully I won’t run short or I will have to make some.

That's a great thing to know! I may have to stock up on some myself. Even though I can make then having them in quantity is always good.

@@mikeyheltonjr, my husband is an engineer. Perhaps we can start our business making percussion caps. He has experience in making tooling so it would be not to challenging for him.

You may wish to look into FA-70 primer compound. This was US military primer used in 30 cal and .45Aacp during WW2, billions of rounds loaded. Its probably the best chlorate type trcipe available and is very cheap to produce. Ive been using it now for a few months, compressed in the cup till about 1/3 full and then i add a drop if thin nitrocellulose lacquer as waterproof binder. These are plenty brisant. Occasionally you may need to sharpen the teeth on your cap maker- the one i got from Dixie Gun Works has lasted for nearly 20 years.

Thank you my friend, I will look into that. I want to be able to produce all of this stuff on my own, so any advice on how I can do that will be greatly appreciated.

Hello friend, I totally understand why you're making them. I have not been able to find them for the past year up here is WV. You had me laughing my butt off with the Precious pink comment and the random thought is so true. Thank you for that. I am going to tell all my hunting buddies and hunt club members to watch this and the gun powder one. You also gave me a great idea, I bought some #11 caps from CSI and they are not setting off the black powder. I am going to add some of the caps to them to see if that will fix it. Thanks again.

Hey, no problem at all. Thanks for watching! I hope that works. I will be making everything else for the rifle soon so I guess we will see if they shoot then lol.

I look for black powder hobbyist and found you. Now, show me what you got going on. I expect good things. If you want a little different look, go by Hobby Lobby and pick up a roll of 0.008 in. copper sheeting. Works well.

That is awesome! Thank you my friend. I'm trying not to buy anything pre made for my rifle. I will be putting out the next videos as soon as I can. I took a break to build a bow for my son but I will be back at it soon. Thanks for watching and thanks again for the heads up.

@@mikeyheltonjr The copper sheeting makes really nice looking caps. Also, not sure what you use as an adhesive but tiny drop of fingernail polish works pretty good. Just don't over do it. Next is black powder. I watch "Everything Black Powder" and the host uses a variety of different items as a carbon source. The best so far is Balsa wood, and Cottonelle toilet paper. Yes, you heard right. Toilet paper. But it has to be Cottonelle. Good luck, friend.
