should have been making netting, pontoon outrigger raft, netting, kiln, charcoal, pottery. One day makes the stone- boi ling pit, water-storage basket, the tarp and tape tent and the raised pole bed. Next few days should be spent creating the netting for the baited net weirs and the seine. If that's not producing much, you need to devote a day to making the 400m chumline, a wooden float and a tarp and tape bait bag tied to it, one every 20m.. Even if your area aint full of fish, it soon WILL be, dueo that chumline

Oh Mikey!!!! Just watched this episode, so bummed Dusty had to leave. Anyway hubby and I talking and wondering if anyone has left due to panic attack. I know he d be first to go id be terrified!!!! Do you think some people who say they are “homesick” were really scared but don’t want to say that on air? Were you ever scared of anything that gave you a panic attack? I just couldn’t handle being alone, hungry, cold and scared of animals.
@mikeyheltonjr
@mikeyheltonjr 3 күн бұрын
@maryharpley294 honestly, no. I dont think that anyone has left because of a panic attack. I do remember donny had a bad time at one point, but he was having hallucinations. If you have ever had a panick attack before, you know the signs are very noticeable. Most of the people who go out there have some level of fear. Whether it is a fear of animals, the elements, or, in my case, failure. But those fears don't usually cause a panic unless you are faced with them. I know people who have really bad anxiety and panic attacks. They are nothing to play about. But with that being said, I believe even they could benefit from this challenge and most likely succeed. Or at least be able to see that they can still survive. Also, you are allowed to have certain medications on the show as long as they are prescribed.

@maryharpley294 hahaha, I don't know about fearless lol. Everyone on the show not only has a lot of experience in the wild, but we all have to go through a mental workup of sorts with a therapist. They try to male sure you won't push yourself too far over the edge mentally. A lot of people don't believe it, but the crew and producers really do have your best interest in mind.

@mikeyheltonjr
@mikeyheltonjr 3 күн бұрын
@Ray-555 Well, when you are eating nothing but animal protein and wild edibles, you're already pooping hard poop. So it doesn't take much to get backed up. There are some exceptions. A more plant based diet helps keep people regular but can also cause diarrhea. Both diarrhea and constipation are really bad out there. It is very hard to find that happy medium. Dehydration could have played a role as well. You might think you are drinking enough water, but sometimes you're not. When I was on the show, I fought against constipation by making sure I always tried to go. Even if I didn't feel like I had to. Idk if that helped, but I was on a high protein diet, and I didn't want to get stopped up.

there's only 10 shows, with lots of repeats of past footage, lots of advertising, maybe 45 minutes of screen time per show, 450 minutes total, and 10 of you contestants, The most you can expect to to see of yourself is 45 minutes, if all was equal. The only reason you might get 70 minites in the entire season is if 5-6 people drop out in the first few weeks., If you want some face time, you have to do something new, like take all different gear than everyone else, Llke make just a tent, then winterize later, , Like not take a ferrorod nor use the bow drill. Like stone-boil your water in a pit, and store it in a 5 gallon basket. Like unravel a rope hammock and make thousands of sq ft of netting, like catch birds in a net traps. like make tape and tarp bags, to store food and fire-kits inside of. Take the rations of pemmican and gorp, and take the salt,. Like dip the strips of surplus fish into salt brine to help preserve the food, then buried it in bags under your shelter. Like make other handles for your shovel, to greatly increase it's utility and dig your pits much faster. Like make pits for refining clay and making ceramic pots. show maikig your little tent in 2-3 hours, ditto the raised bed. So the 3 hours needed to winterize it. Show making the producer's tape into first a plowpoibt shelter for a work pavillion. then it becomess part of the shelter, and ultitmately, it becomes a debris stuffed sleeping bag. The plow point is eventually covered with boughs and the tent is eventually covered with wet debris, 3 layers of t, each allowed to freeze. Show how to make and use an alternative Swedish fire torch and the Siberia fire lays, for when all is wet.. There's plenty of stuff that you CAN use to get on TV, folks.

debris doesn't help much as insulation if it's not covered with a tarp. When debris gets wet, it stops being an insulator and starts being a sponge that sucks away the heat from your shelter/body. Trapped AIR is what insulates you, not the goose down, not the wool fibers. The '"stuffings" are irrelevant, actually, other than as to weight/bulk. Youre not allowed to move more than 2km from where they dropped you off, so the portability of a sleeping bag is worthless on this challenge. Also, water-logged debris is HEAVY. It can collapse your shelter and kill you. I would not bother to add the 6" thick "winterizing" layer of debris to the outside of my tent until I needed to do so (about day 30, or the first hard freeze at night). Then I'd use the producer's tarp to cover the debris for the next month. IF you make it that far (90% do not) You'll need to fold the producer's tarp in half, stuff it with 6" of debris, fold it again, tie the edges and use it as a sleeping bag, on your raised pole-bed. That will mean that something has to repace the tarp as a covering for the layer of dry debris on the outside of your tarp and tape tent. that something is a 2" thick layer of DAMP debris, laid onto the dry debris at dusk, so that it freezes overnight . Depending upon whether or not it thaws in the afternoon, you might be able to add the next 2 such layers to your tent in one day. Make them a good bit "wetter" than the first layer of wet debris, so that they better-seal your body-heat inside of your shelter. The first layer of wet can't be so wet that it ruins the insulating effect of the dry debris that's on the outside of your tent and you want it to freeze ASAP. Once that first layer somewhat protects your dry debris from moisture, the next two layers can have considerably more water-content.

I"ve never understood this baloney about making dream catchers, chairs, jewelry, musical instrucments. I was unaware of the requirement that the food be stored up in the air, 100m away from your camp, and apparently, you just laughed at that bs, too. So I'd have just made a tarp and tape food-bag and buried the salt-brined "extra' fish and buried it in the cold ground under my shelter. I too, would welcome a bear into my larder (gizzly or not). To clear 350k and to uphold my honor, i'm perfectly willing to face the 1 in 100 chance that the arrowed bear will charge me and my shovel. It only takes me 1 second to drop the bow and pull the shovel out of my belt. That's how I would have it as prep for such a shot. I've practiced fast draw of a throwing knife from my belt since 1964, I switched to drawing a gun a year or so later. The first time somebody challenged me to drop a coin, draw an SA "revolver" (CO2) from my holster, cock and click the gun before the coin hit the ground, I was 15. The coin was still knee-high when I did so. My 25 yo brother had challenged me and said "My GOD" LOL. That coin drop, from waist height, takes .55 second and does not include the gunman's .20 second "reaction-time".

Almost everything is riding upon what 10 items you take and WAY too few know what to take, because they also dont know what to do.. if you're relying on fish as your sustainment, you need to eat 4 lbs of (cooked) fish per day. Only half of a fish's live weight is edible flesh, so that's 8 lbs of live weight fish that should go into your belly. If he'd stone-boiled the fish, all at once, in a pit lined with the tyvek bivy, he could have just eaten the fish before they spoiled. He didn't really have that much of that resource to bother with.smoking it.

Sorry, but I think that to expect the producers to give Peter's 8 days more than a blip of, time on the show is not fair to others who lasted much longer. this season or any in the past. People who freeze and starve for 70 days have more coming to them than somebody who fell-out of contention in 8 days and it wasnt even freezing as of yet. You get to take 10,000 calories of rations and you can mix in 2000 more calories of cambium. You certainly dont need to eat the first or last day, so you could have eaten 2000 calories per day. That's not starving (when it's not even cold yet). The rations and the cambium ARE part of my gear and strategy, so I believe it's fair to point that out in this consideration of his performance.

Mike, Temojin claims that he keeps-open an offer to get me on his "show". That's not true. He wanted me (supposedly) to spend money for this and that camera, etc. If that's what he wants, he should send me the money with which to do it. :-) He's an MD, and presumably makes a decent income, so why not do so? LOL. I"ve got a little chromebook and the camera in it doesn't work. So I've got a little plug-in sort of webcam, which suffices for my VA meetings. If you'd like to host a "show' with me about my gear-choices and tactics, I'd be glad to go on the show with you. For years, I tried to use laptops on the Net, but they kept filling-up with pop-ups, maleware, etc. Since the netbooks have no memory, they are protected from such bs, I typically break the screen , a key freezes or some glitch develops once per year, so I get a $60 "re-furbished'" one, not a $500 laptop. I buy very few things that i dont actually need and buy gold with my savings cause I dont trust banks, paper money, or government. I"m almost 72 now and have a 36 year old Asia wife, She has a 15 yo daughter, . I teach karate, and a lot of my schooling is about breaking holds that people have on you. I think that wrassling around for a minute or more, trying to evade some hold or get some hold on an assailant is crazy. You have to disable him in 1/2-1.0 second, at most, or you risk him doing the same to you.. That's all it takes, if they know how and where to strike. The more novel hand shapes that were taught for centuries have fallen out of common-use, but breaking free of holds is why they were developed, The braced-thumb, the "chicken-beak" the single knuckle", the spade-hand, are all VERY painful will used to the side of the ribcage, the neck, the outer or inner thigh, the armpit. Contrary to popular belief, I am NOT just a savant about the Alone show. :-)

they only have 11 hours of show. So the most that they can show any one of 10 people is 1 hour, if all of them stayed the full length of the challenge. Say it lasts 60 days, they can only show ONE minute per day of each of your times. :-) If 5 of you are gone in the first week (never happens) they can show 2 minutes of each of the survivors of that week. IF you know how to do something new to the viewers, you'll get more face time. If you can make a composite bow, for instance, or green wood broadheads, for arrows, your chances of getting more face time on TV increases. If you know how to make the clay-refining pits, the mud kiln, the charcoal, the ceramic pots, their fitted lids, their gasketed tops, you're more likely to get more face time. If you can make fire in any way but the bow drill and ferro rod, that's a new thing that viewers will probably want to see.. If you can stone-boil water, fry food on the shovel-blade, , make replacement handles for the shovel, that's nee to a lot of viewers. Just taking gear that's never before been taken is likely to get you some YT views at least, Such as the duct tape, the reflective tyvek bivy, , the rope hammock. You'll probably be given time to explain why you're taking such things, instead of other things. TV producers are always looking for things that are novel, to attract more viewers.

people dont seem to understand that only half of an animal or fish's live weight is edible flesh. A 10 llb fish offers only 3000 calories, which is just one day's food to lose no weight, and that's if you stay holed-up in your shelter. and you only weigh 200 lbs, dont do much of anything and it's not all that cold. Top swimmers have to eat 10,000 calories per day when in training and they AINT fat! That's how much you CAN burn in cold, wet conditions.

one of those dummies asked me (hautially) on his forum, where he was supposed to get liquid water, after it got really cold. My answer was BEFORE the ground freezes, Dig a pit, When you need water, fill the pit with snow/ice and add some hot rocks. If the ground is not yet hard frozen enough to prevent the water soaking away into the ground, line the pit with a chunk of tarp or your reflective tyvek bivy. Use some grass, gravel, etc, to protect the membrane from the hot rocks.

Now, almost nobody does without a multitool and doesnt bother with a belt knife at all. they dont know WHICH multitool they SHOULD take, or how they shoudd modifiy it or why, but they DiD (finally) learn to value one above a dumb Rambo/Tarzan short-sword. They stil have not learned to not have a fire inside of their shelters, tho, in spite of having 5 dummies burn their shelters down with one. when you only need 10% as much firewood as normal, which IS the case for my tactics and you make the shelter out of a very few poles, ditto the raised bed, you dont need the axe or the saw. My plan calls for quite a bit of digging, for stone boiling pits, clay refining pits, hot rock holding pits under the bed, A forked stick and the shovel offer a pretty secure way to handle hot rocks, too. Neither axe nor saw help with such things.

I see guys having a horrible time, trying to work a gillnet from shore, in cold temps, wind, etc. Man, with the raft, and the shovel fitted with the paddle handle (lanyarded to the raft, so that you can't lose it) would make things SO much easier and you can have this advantage with just one day's work. A raft cant be sunk or swamped and overturning it is very difficult. Lanyard all of your gear to the raft. A few small logs across the keel logs keep your feet up out of the water, Lash the camera case to those logs and sit on it. You COULD make some oars, sith 6" long splits of 6" OD logs, dovetailed into some long poles, OD reduced where you have to hold them. Rig some rope "oarlocks' and you can travel twice as fast, with much less strain on your back, as with a paddle.

Each pontoon will float a big man, so it wont matter if the logs float or not. You're not crossing the Bering Straits with this craft, just tending your netting or maby getting across the lake/river to access some resource. I'd try really hard to never be in water deeper than 6 ft. If you use the life vest as one pontoon, youll need to make a set of tarp and tape, debris stuffed "water wings". I'd not float the raft without a big rock and rope anchor and be ready to deploy the tyvek bivy as a "sea anchor, vs rogue waves. I"d also not go out on the water in bad weather or more than small waves. I get sea sick, and it's dangerous to do such things. There's little likelihood that you'll need to do them, Bring your nets in before storms hit and dont leave more than half of them set overnight, or you'll regret it. I"d not not leave more than 1/4 of them set if I was on a river. One big log catches your net and it's GONE.

two keel logs, set about 2 ft apart on centers, 10 ft long, 2 outrigger logs, 6 ft long, 2 cross-logs, to assemble the raft, 6 ft long, all 4-5" OD. The diagonal brace-logs need to be 7 ft long and 6" plus OD. they cross each other in the center of the raft, so they have to be notched, so that they can "lay flat" on the other logs For them to have some strength, they have to be larger OD than the others These logs total 80 lbs, so you can stand between the keel logs, pick up the raft and walk with it. This is specially true if you put the debris stuffed coveralls and backpack on a pole and bring them to the shore later, making another trip.

I worked cattle and hogs as a kid, sometimes well below 0F and all damned day out in that crap Most of what i know about this stuffI learned 30+ years ago. i want to teach enough people that at least ONE season lasts 4-5 years. The producers have changed things several times because of me. They removed the option of having a bear-vault, fishing arrowheads, and they'll probably one day remove the rope hammock option. There's been a couple more changes due to my comments, but memory fails me at the moment.

Mikey, you won me over while watching Alone. I am so incredibly happy that money was raised so you could spend more time with your family and get therapy for your son. I cried when you were forced to leave. Your dedication to your family was truly touching. Also, I loved the toys you made and singing your son a happy birthday. 💛

I dont even recognize that there IS a box, much less have to think "outside" of it. This Campfire Girl stuff with axe, saw, ferrorod, cookpot paracord, sleeping bag, etc is not worthy of anything like a 500k prize. Its not worth 50k.

Know what a father and son bow is, Mike? Could you make a 3 piece composite bow, using string, tape, and 3 pieces of wood, each just 3 ft long? Could you increase the pull-weightof that bow with a couple of 2' long dowels and a couple of springy sticks? Could you make a green wood broadhead that would reliably, humanely kill, say, a 200 lb bear that was snared to some drag-logs?

how much do you think the Innuit LOVED lugging around all of their furs, hides etc, all summer when they could not use their sleds on snow, or having to feedig useless dogs noisy dogs for 7 months, hmm? Think that they wanted to have to replace all those the first month of winter? I bet not. So they probably used pits dug into the permafrost to store such items for the summer.

if you can't make fire 5 ways, not counting bow drill or ferrorod, you shouldnt be on this show. Flint and steel, fire-rolling, big pump drill, fire thong, and fire saw. All work better than bow drill. Yt has vids about all of this stuff. Just 200 years ago, SOME of the Innuit had never seen a metal cookpot, axe, saw, flint and steel. Sleeping bags did not exist 150 years ago. I realize (almost no other non-contestant does) how SCREWED you are to be stuck on 2.5 sq miles of land (and 2.5 sq miles of water) BUT, you didn't have to walk with all of your bulky, heavy stuff, either, nor protect it from bugs, rot, etc, all summer, nor deal with the permafrost/puddles-skeeters.

when you dont waste a month of time and calories on a shelter, firewood, and boiling water, you'll have plenty of time to do the netting, etc, that FEEDS you and will bait in a bear. The shelter, fire and water can't feed you, and are complete wastes.

what does not having a group have to do with not having netting wrapped around a box-frame made of sticks? Enough wraps and this trap will hold birds, crabs, rabbits and make it harder for predators to get at your catch, too. The "ladder trap" (youtube vids) doesn't have to be reset when one bird drops into it. A bit of netting on some woven withes, set up on 1" sticks or stones, lets the birds peck at the bait thru this netting-floor inside of the trap, but they can get little or none of the bait. Use boiled then fried cambium, bits of fish, berries, maybe a tiny bit of your gorp.

What does not having a group have to do with not making some lifting snares? Animals can't gnaw thru cordage that is holding them 6 ft in the air and weasels can't steal your catch either. Probably neither can the smaller hawks. Split and taper a springy sapling, as you would to make a bow, but on just one end. Harden the splits over a trench fire for 24 hours, and the splits will not lose their 'springiness" as they will when green. Drive two long stakes and lash the bigger end of the split between them. Presto, lifting snare wherever you want one

what does not having a group have to do with not making a basket, lining it with a hunk of tarp, stone boiling 5 gallons of water in a pit, and storing the water in the basket, all in one hour, twice per week? See how much of the struggle comes from ignorance and taking the wrong gear on this challenge? The netting can replace the snarewire, paracord, gillnet and fishing kit, That's how you can take the rations of gorp and pemmican, and the salt block
