I LOOOOOVE that you talk about frontend frameworks and sacrificing time to learn one hinders the time you spend on the other. It seems so obvious but I find that it is such a common mistake. I think its so many people striving to be a full stack dev but lose focus and never learn anything well.

Great video Tim and inspirational.. Haha, so funny is that I am a .Net developer of 18 years (over 21 years now of software experience), but I am actually going for my Certified Kubernetes Administrator exam as we speak. So, I was shocked to see you talk about being careful about learning Kubernetes (k8s). Although, I will agree with you that learning K8s in Depth makes little sense if you are not involved in DevOps/infrastructure/deployments. The reason I am learning K8s is that I have kind of given up on the prospects of being hired as a C# developer, because my web skills just were not kept up to date and about 90% of the jobs I see require senior level knowledge of React/Angular/Vue/HipJs frameworks. Unfortunately, having many years of experience boxes me in and recruiters automatically assume I am an Angular/React guru since I have many years of .Net experience. I spent many years being a WinForms developer, but definitely took a deep dive into C# over years, yet still feel there is so much I am missing. For example I wrote my own ORM and a mapping library, e.g., using Expression API, which taught me a lot of how the language operates under the covers, especially the functional features, such as lambdas and deferred execution. Yet, there is so much to know in this massive framework that has grown substantially since I started using it in 2002. As well, I plan on going for my AWS CSAA or CSAD cert and using AWSSDK with my .Net DevOps projects. I know you talk about Azure, but AWS has become very friendly with the .Net eco-system as well. Surprised you managed not to mention that and AWS still has the lion's share of the market, even as Azure and GCP catch up. I found it amazing how much of the AWS eco-system I can control and integrate through .Net. With regards to web development and being a C# web developer, saying not to immediately learn React/Angular as a web developer in C# may be a tough sell. However, being a guy who loves .Net/C# and is more passionate about back-end (until Blazor came around), I will say I utterly hate these front-end Javascript frameworks. I don't find them fun to learn , shiny or cool at all, but rather they are over-engineered, unstable spaghetti frameworks and they only move fast because their entire foundation was flawed from the start. I am hoping WebAssembly will revolutionize front-end development and frameworks like Blazor will replace these dreadful JS frameworks. Sadly, the revolution of Javascript and now every C# job ends really ends up being 80% javascript with some bakc-end work of wiring up APIs or performing CRUD on databases. I am striving now to become a DevOps developer as I feel it is a lucrative career and is really opening my eyes to the entire development lifecycle and infrastructure. I like that I am learning the cloud and the full SDLC life cycle, as well as CI/CD, IaC and really brings the power out of containerization following the 12 Factor DevOps principles. I am hoping to eventually morph myself into a DevOps/C# Back-End developer as a majority of the back-end C# jobs I see almost seem to fit the criteria. I'm pretty shocked at how many back-end roles I see now want Kubernetes, Docker, AWS/Azure/GCP proficiency (even many wanting CSAA certs). Many I know who are really attached to the back-end are now going the DevOps routes, as they feel the same as me the industry standard of being a "FULL-STACK" (aka unicorn dev) who has to spend most of his day writing javascript code and even doing web design is very unfulfilling to old school, back-end developers like ourselves. As much as I love Blazor, you will be hard pressed to find many companies adopting it. I think Blazor will be good for my own personal ventures and allows me to utilize an easy-to-use (as a c# dev) full-featured and powerful front-end framework so I can build my own front-ends without having to spend years learning React/Angular/Vue. But, we have to be honest that a majority of the personnel who do front-end code are Javascript devs and many companeis are trying to morph them into back-end devs, hence the revolution of NodeJs. Node is pretty inferior to C# , but companies are wanting to hire devs who wear multi-hats and keeping them in one language eco-system is ideal. As you say learning multiple eco-systems will really be a challenge and I don't think it really is possible to be a proficient senior level C# developer and senior level Angular/React/Ember/Knockout/Vue/HipJS developer. I'd always love to hear your suggestions for people in my boat who kind of got a bit dated in their .Net skills, yet are still passionate about Microsoft technologies and being a .Net developer. I hope after I gain DevOps experience, can find employment, I can slowly morph myself into being a C# back-end microservice or API developer who can integrate those skills with my DevOps skills.

Refreshing your skills and adding new ones is a good strategy for making yourself more attractive to potential employers. Don't forget, though, that often what is asked for in a job description is a wishlist, not a must-list. Who they will actually hire will probably look a lot different than that. As for Blazor, the technology is very new, so it will take some time to get a large base of companies using it for their applications. Remember that companies don't change out their applications with every new technology. If they started in Angular, they aren't easily switching over to Blazor, even if it would be better for them in the long-run. It will take building new applications to build up that user-base. The other thing is to remember that your experiences aren't representative of the community as a whole, just of the companies you have come across. There are Blazor jobs out there, there are a TON of WinForms jobs out there (mostly .NET Framework), and there are even VB6 jobs out there. You just need to know where to look. Remember that you aren't trying to get hundreds of jobs, just one. If there are only two openings in your area for what you do, that means you have fewer choices, but so do those employers.

 @IAmTimCorey Thank you for your response Tim.. One big problem is I had my own business developing dental software for 15+ years and it limited my exposure to different web stacks and the corporate world. -------------------- TL;DR I will keep looking for work, but another problem with software jobs today is they want advanced algorithm whiteboards, design pattern theory, trivia style reference quizzes, behavioral psychological questions and many other things I will have to prepare for not being on job market for 15 years. With the job market being so bad, employers are being pretty cutthroat and even a WinForms job seems tough to get. What I like about DevOps is it is very focused and I can prepare for the interviews, whereas software jobs are kind of chaotic and people will grill you on a variety of different areas. Many hiring managers will shut the door on you the minute you say you don't like Javascript, e.g. BTW.. I may eventually want to enroll in your courses (although free ones have a lot for me to work with) and if you know anyone who does give C# type job career coaching/consulting I'd consider employing those services for the short-term at least (with my limited funds). -------------------------- I have done a deep dive in ASP.Net WebAPI and Blazor, as well actually following your courses time to time. However, there is so much preparation I will have to do as even my interviewing skills are bad. In addition my software jobs want memorization/trivia type quizzes to vet you and I Think they are awful. I am actually going to spend time reading books on software development theory which I think will help me for interviews. Learning DevOps is really educating me on the infrastructure and architecture of enterprise grade systems. I understand many job descriptions are laundry lists, but here in Charlotte, NC where I live, I have interviewed at few places and they are dead serious about wanting you to be very skilled in Angular/React/JS and even expect you to do know data architecture and back-end well. I know other cities with larger tech and more focused tech departments and teams have more back-end jobs. WIth the rise of remote jobs, that will be my best hope now and what I am aiming for. I will avoid doing any WinForms jobs and don't often see these jobs, because I am getting old and it will be a dead-end job that will literally just probably pay my bills and nothing else. At 43 years old, I need to work on technologies that will help make up for the years not doing lots of cloud and web dev. What I have seen , however, is that having DevOps skills really opens up your value and desirability for many back-end jobs. I feel after doing DevOps a couple years and spending maybe an hour a day on my free time doing some C# stuff on side (already have almost two decades of experience with it) I will be able to morph myself into a back-end developer with a specialization in DevOps/Infrastructure/Cloud. I know in my heart I am a .Net developer and love the .Net framework and C# and actually admire the changes that are happening to the language. I regret the decisions I have made, but I am running out of my time/money and living on unemployment and debt now while I grind away training myself in DevOps. I feel once I am financially stable and have a more diverse skill set that is cloud focused, I can morph myself into the back-end C# developer I yearn to be. Or, I may go the consulting or architect route if possible.

I would add that the biggest thing for me (pre employment) was not stopping. You learn a new language, you make an application or two for fun/concept. You don't find a direction to take with it beyond that, you stop for a while. Something peaks your interest again, you start the whole process over. Just keep writing code! If you can't find anything interesting to work on, and you are not employed as a software developer, go refine your personal Libs. Maybe the wrappers/API you wrote for using XDocument could use some expansion, Perhaps their are some apps you hard coded a bunch of strings in that you could move to a file so you can easily change localizations. Just do anything you can to keep yourself practicing. Learning music is much the same thing, if you put your instrument down for a few days, it becomes that much more difficult to pick back up where you left off. Just my two cents, but I don't deal with dot net daily. I have to work in a far more esoteric language, IBM Informix/Genero (4gl).

Hi Tim, thanks for the video. I'm a bit one of these persons that have problem with the focus and trying to learn to much at a time. By watching this video idea came up. Any chance for a series with tasks to do and solutions some time later? This would be like C# home works to do for which you would present your solution as well in next episode. It would be great to have these task relaying on previous job done. So let's say the goal might something like an app like car shop. The task 1: start a new project , create some classes and print them on the screen. ( I know that this concept is shown in a lot of videos ). Goal 2: read and save the car list from the file. And so on and so on whatever comes to your mind / you will find interesting in comments. There might be things like add logging, dependency injection etc.

I work for companies that would benefit from an inventory type app with Mobile Solutions. But every time I sit down to begin learning C sharp I find myself also jumping back and forth to Learn Python because it seems easier of a programming language to learn. Then I get to a point where I just get frustrated and quit both for about a week or two and then I try to start again. But I'm at the point where I'm starting to feel too old to do any of it. This may not fit the exact bill of this topic, however my question is in regards to portfolios. I work for a large corporation as a controls engineer, this leads to me building applications in a few different languages to help fellow engineers or to integrate machine information to be presented to the operations team in a more understandable format. Just flat out sharing this code would be bad practice on my part, however as of late I have been considering doing some freelance work to broaden my horizons. I recently got a 100€ bill because I had forgotten to cancel a subscription where I had the cheapest server machine. I had created it during some Azure tutorial I did many months ago. There is one part I would have to disagree with that was mentioned and that was javascript. Because I started using blazor a lot and really love it. However, I found after a while that especially with .net 5, javascript is actually becoming more important than ever. I agree with staying away from the javascript frameworks and with blazor, they are not needed. I found a few cases where I really had to get into javascript in order to do more things with c#. An example is lets say a person wants to create a blazor component and it needs to scroll to a certain area. Even being able to use the keyboard to navigate even without textboxes. In that case, javascript was very important. With .net 5 and javascript isolation, its really great because after doing the javascript necessary, its now easy to create a custom class so when you use, still use c# since c# communicates well with javascript and javascript communicates well with c#. In that case, its important to get deep enough into javascript to support things that blazor does not support out of the box. However, after creating those functions, then use c# to work with it then.
@IAmTimCorey
@IAmTimCorey 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying to stay away from JavaScript entirely. Mostly I'm saying stay away from the frameworks. Knowing vanilla JavaScript is important when you work with the web (just like HTML and CSS). Just don't conflate that with needing to know Angular/React/Vue.

@@IAmTimCorey thanks for clarifying that. i found that blazor is a much better shiny bit anyways. with blazor, there is no need anymore for angular/react/vue. blazor makes those now dead since it makes the most sense to do as much code sharing in c# as possible.
