She made it how she wanted to make it and it looks beautiful. Just because you are a florist does not mean you know everyone's tastes. Next time you see someone enjoying a new hobby, just shut it and move along. Edit: I said what I meant and I meant what I said, no amount of telling me how rude you think I am is going to change my mind. Criticism of someone enjoying something harmless in THEIR HOME is far more rude then me saying shut it and move along. And if you disagree, that's okay. Notice how I'm not trying to wear anyone down to agree with me? But people in this comments section think they can force me to agree with them. You are the rude inconsiderate ones. I will not apologize for defending someone's JOY. Edit edit: I'm the Kanye of this comments section, can't tell me nothin. My SIL just got married a couple weeks ago in California. She was quoted $10,000 for flowers at her wedding. She went to Trader Joe’s instead and bought $600 worth of flowers (she preordered them or something), and we all stuffed the bud vases, made our bridesmaid bouquets, made the groomsmens’ boutonnieres, and she made her bouquet. We had leftover flowers. A ton of leftover baby’s breath, which I braided into my daughter’s hair (she was the flower girl), and I think we used to decorate other areas of the venue.

@@mariesong729 they thrifted all sorts of different bud vases in the months prior for super cheap, and the bridal party (there were 12 bridesmaids and groomsmen) assembled everything the night before. Tip from a florist: height is your friend! Your arrangement looks beautiful, and you knew of several tricks that many "ameteur" florists miss, which is great! And realistically, you can do whatever youd like with your arrangements, and you dont have to like what is traditionally "correct". I myself love abstract and unique designs! That being said, for this arrangement, you seemed to go a more classic angle, so id say either use a shorter vase if you want a short, dense, arrangement, or cut the flowers longer. According to traditional elements of floral design, the height of the arrangement on top should be around twice the height of the base its in. There are acceptions to this rule for sure, but i feel like that rule of thumb could benefit this particular arrangement. You did an awesome job, though. Just wanted to give you some pointers from someone with experience!

I was a florist for ten years. It’s such a beautiful outlet! Just a tip, starting with greenery will prevent you from overstuffing your arrangement and give it a good base so the flowers don’t droop around the bottom. Also, you can always cut more off, but start with longer stems. The start and finished product is always a journey. Beautiful job, by the way!

Professional florist here! Beautiful and I learned from you, here’s the tips: To save even more money and give dimension and texture add some greenery. Never use scotch tape, use waterproof floral tape. You can also use a sharper knife to get a better cut so the floral food and water go up the stem (the vein) better. For hydrangeas cut them in a “V” shape since their stem is so thick. They will drink better that way, you can also dip your hydrangea in alum powder to make it last longer. Play around with height and space unless you like it stuffed and mounded like that. Great video! 👍🏼

Yes, a floral knife and cutting at an angle is better than scissors because scissors pinch the tubes in the stem through which the flowers drink - and hydrangeas drink a lot! I'm surprised how common it is to use scissors in floral design.

You did that! 👏 I’m a former event florist, now flower grower and I only reflex the petals of flowers with my fingers for events because it shortens their shelf life. If you like how it looks, of course keep doing it. But your roses will last a little longer if you kept them open on their own.

How long do the roses stay pretty after you reflex them? I was hoping to do this for my wedding next year!
@harvestandholly
@harvestandholly 7 ай бұрын
@@sophiabalderas601 2-3 days. The lighter the rose, the worse it will look due to bruising. Reflexing works best on older roses too or the petals can be too firm and will snap. Best advice is to spray “crowning glory” on them while reflexing and after. Also be aware that there are just some roses that don’t want to be reflexed. The best ones I’ve found to reflex are quicksand (blushy beige) and vendela (ivory)…. There are others that work too, but you commonly see these two varieties reflexed for weddings. Lastly, the spinning trick she does is a better option to fluffing up your roses because it doesn’t damage the petals as much.

i‘m someone who does this professionally so here are some actual tips. 1. cutting off the ends of the stem doesn‘t have to happen at an angle. it‘s a lot easier to do if you‘re cutting with a knife but you‘re not getting more water into the stem because that‘s not how those work. (flower stems are like straws, it doesn‘t matter if the straw has a straight end or was cut at an angle, what matters is that it‘s not pressed together at the bottom so that liquid can pass through without issue.) what matters is that whatever tool you‘re cutting with is sharp so that you can achieve a clean cut, everything else is preference. you also don‘t have to cut it under water to prevent air pockets, they are not a concern i have as a florist, i handle thousands of flowers every week. 2. opening your roses in advance isn‘t reccomended practice, i know some people do it because they want maximum effect now but it doesn‘t help the shelf life of your flowers. there are varities that have big heads that look open when they‘re still closed, there are varities that look very closed that open beautifully within a few days of being in room temperature and there are varities that look closed that don‘t open at all, avoid the last one. for specific pointers, ask your local florist, they should be able to reccomend roses that last long and open beautifully to you. 3. speaking of local florists, pay them a visit, they likely have fresher and higher quality wares than grocery stores because grocery stores operate differently than small florists. the price tag will reflect that and it‘s up to you what works best for you. 4. an easy way to make a bouquet outside the vase is to take two flowers, cross them, and then keep adding flowers on top, all oriented the same. when working with multiple materials, make sure to distribute them evenly. important note and a frequently made mistake to make here is that you are building in layers instead of going around. your starting flowers are on the edge of the bouquet, not in the center, don‘t rotate the thing as you go. this doesn‘t work if you want a big flower at the center, in that case, you build around it by rotating with every flower you add. make sure that everything is even in terms of height by pulling flowers in or out at the stem. rotating while looking at it top on can help spotting inconsistencies. at the end, you tie it together with some stable yarn or bast, whatever you have at hand. keep a good tension that won‘t cut into the flower stem but still keeps everything together and wind it around two or three times. it‘s better to wind it around fewer times and keep a good tension than doing it 10 times but with very inconsistent tension because that will fall apart very fast. you do have to test how much tension you need and develop a feel for it but at one point, it will become muscle memory if you do it frequently. then all there‘s left to do is to cut all the stems to an even length and to put it in a vase or wrap it in some newspaper or a cut up paper bag, if you want to gift it to someone. 5. you‘re totally on point with removing the leaves of big flowers, they take so much water away from the actual flower and it‘s such a simple thing you can do to make them last longer. flower arranging is such a nice hobby and i‘m happy you discovered it for yourself. your arrangement looks pretty good, if a bit uneven in terms of length but that‘s not the end of the world

Here is a trick from a florist. Soak your hydrangia...the whole thing head and all for at least an hour. This hydrates the petals as well as the flower. Also do not put your roses directly into the arrangement either. They should be cut on an angle and give time to hydrate properly. Both of these tricks will take your arrangement over the top. Do not put anything into the water...just lukewarm water for both but don't soak the heads of the roses. THAT will make it last a long time. It is all about the treatment of the flowers before they go in the vase.

One more florist friend here advocating for some height! It feels crazy at first to step away from that comfy rounded shape that’s most folks’ safe zone. Remember, you can always cut them a bit shorter if it ends up looking wrong, but start a little long with some secondary flowers like your roses or ranunculus in this case, or ferns or palm fronds or other greenery or tall composite flowers like delphinium, hollyhock, or even feverfew or things like that in a future arrangement

Just a ‘hot tip’ that once you know, it is too logical to not put to use: cut you stems on a diagonal whilst submerged in water. You are not just cut their length, you are also cutting open their source to hydrate them from. So on an angle gives them a larger surface to hydrate from and considering that the stem has been ‘suffering’ from being severed and them essentially having a wound wide open to air, water, air, water(potentially of questionable quality) you want to cut them with very sharp and very clean scissors in very clean water (potentially with a 30ml/250ml ratio of Hydrogen Peroxide/water) because you stem is literally living and breathing and needing to drink. So as soon as you make the cut the stem will do the equivalent of a big gulp and for it to be able to ‘quench it’s thirst’ (because after it has been cut it immediately starts sealing the ‘wound’). So to hydrate with a little cleansing boost(the H2O2) you will have a happier, healthier ‘more youthful’ flower. (I know, it sounds like “Really? That sounds a bit dramatic. Hardly that important .” But having sharp clean scissors, a bowl of cool clean water(hydrogen peroxide if it’s handy) is simply adding intention not taking time and the effort is incrementally different but the action is rewarding in itself. **and it’s what I have learned as I have been creating with flowers. I’m always learning so it is sharing what I have gained not telling you what I know because I know everything! 🌷+❤+🪻

It's lovely but I would stop short at calling it professional. Add a little bit more of a dome to the overall shape (can still be random, but generally this means the whole thing can be seen when sat with it on a table!)

@@elizabethedwards4686 The point is you need to pick one. She looked like she was going for the classic dome shape, but didn't quite succeed. One professional is giving advice on how to better make a dome shape. The other is suggesting deviating from the dome entirely. Neither is contradicting each other.

Since you are gentle with the flowers and care to even cut them in an angle, i am going to give you another tip ❤ cut them with a knife, as the squeezing of scissiors actually doesn't help with the water flow Best of luxk, it is a beautiful hobby 🤗💖💖💖

Hi, i see you already got some great tips already about arrangement, i have one abput cutting. I know that skissors are a safe and fast option, but they can pinch the xylem and phloem shut (tubes that run water and nutrients), so your flowers might die earlier. It is usually better to get a really good sharp knife and cut it in one clean pull to avoid pinching. But it is completely fine if you don't feel cpmfortable with that as it can be a little hard with harder flowerstems like those of roses.

It's sooo common these days! Everyone thinks they can sell their amateurish crafts. Our local "art" gallery is full of stuff that looks like first-timers painted in class. And we now have someone who taught herself guitar 8 months ago charging for concerts. I don't know why people can't be bothered to spend time learning a craft and developing actual skills before charging for their work.

Florist here. Cutting at an angle technically dosent actually help flowers last longer. Good if it works for her but generally it is much better for the cells in the plant to be cut with a sharp knife that dosent squeeze the cells together And that usually just leads to a cut on an angle ( that's where the misconception comes from) But sissers by their very nature "sqish and squeeze" the cells and that makes it harder for the plant to absorb the water Again if it works for her that's amazing I don't mean to hate I just want to help in case someone else is struggling to make their flowers last Also the cutting should be repeated every two or so days and the water should be exchanged

Cut the stems at an angle under running water.
@wa11ie
@wa11ie 7 ай бұрын
this is not one but two myths, cutting them at an angle does nothing and you don‘t need to cut them under running water, that‘s water you can easily save. what matters is that you have a sharp tool. with knives it‘s easier to get a clean cut at an angle and with sheers or sharp scissors, it‘s just as easy to cut them straight. when you cut a plastic straw at an angle, you won‘t get more water into the straw as you would get with an uncut straw. the concern about cutting it underwater is to prevent embolisms in the xylem but they happen so rarely that it‘s just not worth doing it. if your flower doesn‘t last long, there are a lot of other reasons i can think of that aren‘t an embolysm in the xylem because usually cut flowers don‘t last because of something that happened while it was still growing on the bush.
