It actually is possible that they didn't use AA batteries to fake the output. 0.7V a cell is accurate for a fully charged capacity of Saltwater batteries, but likely the capacity is still poor. Even jury rigging my own saltwater batteries, I was able to get about 0.6V a cell, and that was due to my inadequate mixture of salt and water as well as my bad separator(wax paper was all I had atm) and the fact I use aluminum instead of zinc because it is cheaper to get soda cans instead of buying a sheet of zinc (from experience).

@Suzuki_Hiakura Жыл бұрын
Just going from some tests of my own, it won't last long regardless. Even marring the surface of the cathode and anode plates doesn't increase the surface area hardly at all. The one made in the video is also super small, to begin with; they might get lucky and have the same energy storage as a large capacitor. I made one using much larger plates and it drains extremely quickly... also my plates are much closer together lowering the resistance a bunch. I am working to increase the capacity by making an activated charcoal coating that increases the surface area drastically and cheaply so as to not require a ton more plates both metaphorically and physically.
@realflow100 Жыл бұрын
@Suzuki_Hiakura try washing soda instead of salt water. it will be massively more rechargeable and have far more capacity. and MUCH MUCH HIGHER VOLTAGE almost 1.2-1.5v I got over 100mA of current out of a penny with the copper sanded off and a small piece of copper wire just dipped into a small cup spaced apart significantly. I recommend cooking your washing soda in the oven at 375-400 degrees *F for at least 2-4 hours to make sure its very dry and theres no bicarbonate mixed within it. You DON'T want any bicarbonate/baking soda. it will turn the copper into copper carbonate and not make a battery. Also used distilled water or even better deionized type 1 water if you can find it. the pure-er the better. You can also increase the surface are and capacity by making a "pasted" electrode surface by making a particulate paste with distilled water a dilute mixture of the electrolyte (about 10-30%) (to give a weak bond to each inter particle when its dried.) then dry the plates completely overnight. Let them get good and dry. Then sandwich them together with a few layers of paper towel.. Giving plenty of extra paper towel around the edges to prevent shorts or losing active material. Press the plates together firmly such that they are under about a pound or 2 of compression. Then soak the paper towelling with the washing soda and distilled or deionized water mixture. (About 75% saturation is probably a good value to prevent precipitation) Charge it up. and it should work and provide power for a good period of time! And better capacity. Apply just a thin layer of the paste to each electrode. don't make a super thick layer. beyond 0.5mm thickness the internal resistance increases and it doesn't hold the voltage up as well. You want a thin electrode backing with about an 0.1-0.3mm thickness pasted particle layer. The main trouble is actually trying to get ahold of the copper and zinc powders to create the pasted electrodes. You can try grinding them with a very coarse grinding wheel or a belt sander. but it could take hours to create a significant quantity. Fully charged the zinc may turn dark or almost black. and fully discharged it becomes lighter.

my understanding is that you periodically clean the sheets. Take them out when not using them battery. Or take out the zinc at least. Give new salt-water or vinager or brick cleaner fluid, periodically. It should go for a long time with clean plates.
@Suzuki_Hiakura Жыл бұрын
The thickness matters little, as it is a small saltwater battery, but around .1mm is aluminum can thickness, and I originally made one with .2mm thickness. I would recommend going for .1mm to .2mm as anything more would be excessive in small applications and any less would be difficult to fold. I assume from their using pliers that the thickness is around .2mm or even .3mm. The lifetime of the battery is not going to be long. Voltage x Amps = Watts. Saltwater batteries are notoriously low voltage, and they can't handle much current without causing gassing in the salt water (unsure if the cells corrode as I haven't worked on my batteries in a while). Used to have the numbers, but likely at the full capacity (assuming 4.6v at 0.76V per cell) you might get a bit of time out of it but don't assume a saltwater battery that size can give two hours. The last reference I found of any practical application some company tried to pursue was by Aquion, making large 48V 2.2kWh cells... a lot of their claims seemed quite far-fetched such as the 10C charge and 20C discharge, and I couldn't find any more than an old video and a dead listing. It is possible that it might last about as long as a AA battery, as I remember reading a good rule of thumb was to consider how a saltwater battery needs to be at least 3x the size of a similar battery to match the Capacity. It is possible I am beginning to misremember some of the numbers, as I only found the Aquion 48V 2.2kWh saltwater battery video, and most of my research was pulled from a lot of random sources on the net... since starting college I have started saving some of the most vital information, but bookmarking or saving papers is still a difficult habit to start :c

Hi. OK seen lots of these videos don't have the time to make it myself to test the validity. So far all videos on this have couple things in common. Namely you never see the test wires in full and that they come from the tester. You also don't say the life span of it. Also a second test of the voltage after use. Cause while you were showing the voltage after charging it was dropping very fast and not holding the charge. Call me sceptic. But you should be clear on specifics with things like this. Great job though
@Suzuki_Hiakura Жыл бұрын
I didn't notice the quick drop in charge the first time... that proves it's a saltwater battery. It is stabilizing the voltage as 0.7V per cell is very high... the best I ever got was a semi-stable 0.6v which stabilized at around 0.55v. Also, the capacity can drop rather quickly as they don't hold hardly any charge. Still can do certain things with them or in large enough applications use them as super cheap batteries, but it does seem quite valid imo. Prob better to have someone who works with these for a living to confirm, as I only dabbled for a time and tested a small bit.
