This is such a fun way to make paintings quickly and intuitively. Maybe you do this exercise for fun and painting practice, or maybe you do it to find a quick study for a larger painting. The key is to simply do it, have fun with it and don't worry about the results.

Gotta admit, when (at the 12:50 mark) you added the bit of dioxazine purple to the lower left painting, I gasped! Wow, I got to see the difference right there, that it made! And moments later, you added the lighter purple, and then took the smaller brush to make those horizontal marks - holy cow! Genius! Your painting intuition is lighting the way for me. Thank you, David!

Julie, yes that white edge acts like a mini matte that helps set off the painting. Thanks for watching.

Surprising! Good exercise to get into a flow more spontaniously. Although I really don't appreciate any shades of violet, I could recognize, what it means to use muted colors next to vibrant ones and how to set highlights. Motivates me just to start and try something without being too strict to myself or always in fear of failure - typical German, as I suppose... Please go on offering us some inspiration

Very interesting to see the creative process and soothing to watch. This looks so enjoyable. I plan to try it for fun. I was artistic when I was younger, but I got upset when a friend had what I perceived as more talent than me, so I just stopped making art, because I developed a negative attitude towards myself as a child based on comparing myself to others. My mom tried to talk me out of stopping, but I didn't listen to her. Several decades later, I want to get back in touch with more of my innate creativity. I feel like it's a part of me that has been stifled for far too long. I'm over the whole comparison thing. I don't need to be like anyone else - just me. That freeing realization is part of the process of learning to express oneself through art. It took me a while, but here I am. Do you have a video where you explain the setup for how you record your paintings in progress? That's pretty cool to be able to see the art develop. I know you do it for KZbin to share with others, but do you ever find it helps you think in different ways about the art you create when you watch what you've recorded? Like an athlete reviewing tapes of their performance. Maybe you think things like, "Next time I might do that differently" or "That was good; I'll do that again." Or is it all so intuitive for you that you don't think that critically about it?

I do not have a video of my setup for recording. I record with my iPad and have a camera boom that I use for the overhead shots. I rarely watch what I record after the editing is complete - it’s on to the next one.

This is how I usually paint since I stopped drawing and painting what I draw yet adding abstract markings inside my drawings. Now I just want freedom to make shapes of ‘whatever’

Fabulous. Do you ever go back and add accents when it’s dry? Or are you strictly wet on wet?

I enjoyed watching your work evolving, I'm trying to understand your decision making as your paintings develop. Do you make any vlogs where you voice over your painting to show your thought process?
@davidm.kesslerfineart1717
@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 11 ай бұрын
Julie, I have more than 200 videos on KZbin, some I talk about the paintings while making them. I paint intuitively, so decision making isn’t thought it, its spontaneous. Most times there is really nothing to talk about.

Hi there…. Was wondering… do you varnish acrylic works on paper?
@davidm.kesslerfineart1717
@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 11 ай бұрын
Wendy, I don’t use varnish on any paintings, regardless of substrate. It’s a long held myth that acrylic paintings need varnish - they don’t. I like to have parts of the painting to have glossy paint and some areas to have a matte finish for additional contrast and interest.
