you cleared up the piece of the puzzle i was missing. you are right, most people on ebay are either selling new Chinese watches, grey market Japanese watches, and the people selling luxury watches are a mixed bag. with a good amount of them coming across a watch at a sale, family passdown, ect. they do a search and find out a watch is worth 5g and think if i get 4200 i'll be happy and just want a fast sell. same reason pawn shops exist.

This doesn't make any sense at all. Buy a watch for $2,100 + sales tax ($117 in my state) Sell watch on ebay for $2,200 and pay ebay fees roughly 16% in most categories ($352). Cost of Goods $2,217 Sale price minus fees $1,848 Net profit -$369

I don't understand how you can make money from this. There are 25 of the same models listed on ebay or chrono24, and you would just buy the one at the lowest price. Then, in order to re-sell, you would just have to list again at the lowest price, otherwise it would just sit on the market. Plus, you gotta pay ebay huge fees and now they give you a 1099 form thanks to Biden.

My question is how you make the profit when considering the Ebay fees. If you buy a watch for $2,100 and sell it for $2,600, you may have to pay $350-400 on Ebay fees for that sale. If you get lucky to make such a sale, you might make $100-150 in that scenario. Also, how do you make certain that all the parts are original parts on the inside? And what if you're 100% sure that the watch is legit, but the buyer you sell it to then claims that it's not legit and requests a refund? And what happens if you buy the watch and realize it's fake when it gets to you? You lose time and have to spend money to ship it back to get a refund.

I made a similar comment, before reading yours. Now ebay fees are assessed on the amount the buyer pays, including sales tax and shipping costs. Selling a watch for $2500, would amount to $2800 after tax, insurance, shipping costs. The watch bought for $2000 would cost around $2200 with sales tax and shipping. there is really no margin. it should be bought at around 1600 and sold at 2500 for a reasonable margin for the seller. Also it should be factored than 10% of buyers may have remorse and request a return. some fees may not be refunded.

@Cj Nation367 just hope the seller doesn't file an INAD. When that happens, ebay overrides a NO RETURN policy and you as a seller will be forced to take the return. At that point, you pray they dont send back a rock or a fake replica. Ebay sides with buyers with INAD cases. Authentication happens on the sale end not the return end. Thats where most sellers get burned.

I don't think it works easy like that. Ebay charges 10% of your listing item, and if you buy from ebay, you would also pay sales tax for it. In each watch buying and selling session, you would lose about 18% of the value, let's say you're flipping an $10,000 watch, you need to make sure you're buying under market for at most $8,000 in order to be profitable. I don't think this is sustainable

Ebay charges around 13% in fees, but it is calculated on the total amount with shipping costs and sales tax. So a watch sold for $2500 would amount to about $2800 paid by the buyer and $400 in ebay fees calculated on that, maybe $25/$50 in insurance and shipping costs.

I have not seen a discounted Rolex on Ebay for years. They are selling for market value. Me and my friend joke that the economy must be going well because there is nobody unloading their Rolex because they need the cash. Most of the listings that I see are dealers. And if I look at the broken Rolexes or other luxury watches then they are not worth the effort. It would cost too much too fix.

Sales tax and ebay's commission is about 13% on top of total cost with taxes and shipping. So if you buy a watch for $1800, with average US sales tax it costs you $1950 approx. You relist it for $2500, sales tax, insurance and shipping adds $250 or more. So ebay takes 13% of commission on that about $350, you may spend $50 for shipping and insuring, so it is about $400 in expenses. You paid for the watch $1950+$400, it gets to $2350. SO your profit is $150. If you bought the watch for $2100, you would have lost money. If you sell a lot, you have to factor that you may get some return request, and some fees are not refunded with the return. Or buyers making false claims and returning a watch in worse condition than it was sold. Years ago ebay was not charging sales tax, so the margin was a lot better. The fact that eBay's commissions and fees are on the amount paid by the buyer, including shipping and sales tax, it really reduces the margin to a very low level. I see this video is from 2 years ago, so maybe your calculations are relevant for back then, not for 2023.

@@ratedm90 the author of this video does not address these comments. It is clickbait video. Ebay offers guarantees. But the commission is based on the sale price+sales tax+shipping costs. Only way to make some gain is to sell a watch at 50% to 100% more than you paid. Or if you buy for cheap something in high demand. Buy a few watches heavily discounted (sometimes if you buy 2 you may get 20% off from some sellers). Anyway I do not trust the guy who made the video, He did not address several comments that raise these points/

Interesting vid and good side hustle idea but if you buy watches for $2200 and re-sell them for $2500-2600, eBay will take 10% of the selling price and PayPal will take 3%. So, 13% of $2600 = $338. Subtract $338 eBay/PayPal fees from $2600 (selling price) = $2262 which leaves a net profit of only $62, not the $300 profit you were expecting to make without ebay/PayPal fees added. Or have I got this wrong? Also, as you've noted, private watch sellers usually won't be flipping watches for a profit BUT they will surely be aware of retail prices/what their watch is worth and I would guess most if not all would be reluctant to sell it for several hundred dollars below retail? I would guess it's the same as eBayers selling their cars: they'll usually be aware of what their car is worth retail and wholesale and although you might get $100 or $200 knocked off the asking price by haggling, I would guess most sellers would not be willing to sell it for wholesale/trade price. As a trade-in with a dealer they might but selling privately on eBay they would probably expect to make close to private retail price? Can anyone advise if I've got this wrong as I'd like to try this but the eBay/PayPal fees would seem to cancel out most of the profit?

I used to be a big eBay seller and I stopped for these very same reasons. eBay went to hell when they split with PayPal and they both started charging separate fees. Just wasn’t worth it. Maybe a few years ago it was lucrative, but now I just don’t see it.

IMO Not a good idea to use your credit card. General rule of thumb, don't charge on credit if you can't afford the cash value. That's borrowing money with the possibility of interest.

I think you could be more profitable if you stick to flipping on forums. No fees, no retail taxes. More risk though. Your example you gave doesn’t add up. If you buy a watch for 2100, and flip on eBay for 2500. The upfront sales tax on the Purchase and ebay/PayPal would eat away at your margin. You would barely break even. I’m also confused because in another video you discussed the issue with selling sport Rolex watches. The demand is too high and these watches are too sought out. So it’s difficult to flip them and come out ahead... hmmmn
