In the next phase of my hunting knife project series I show a work though of a 800 grit, hand rubbed, satin finish with a few tips.

Very nice job. As someone who tried this once, these blades can look nice and flat until you try to sand them and then you find high spots and low spots.

Beautiful work. What tool is that you used for the etching?

Thanks, Joe! I use whats called a "Personalizer" for marking, and etching.

Thank you for all the great sanding tips in this video. I noticed you used a Panavise in one phase of your sanding. Can you tell me if it the jaws can swing to a level horizontal position for sanding scales, blades, etc? Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave, sorry for the late reply. Yes, the Panavise I use has full reticulation making it much easier to rotate to various positions when working on scales. If you pick one up be sure to purchase the solid mount base. The suction base can be tough to hold in place.

@@TwistedOakHandmade Thanks for the reply AND tip on the solid mount base. I think I'll go ahead and make the buy. Your videos are outstanding...very informative! Huge help for this newbie.

does Silicon Carbide sandpaper also suitable to do this satin finish on carbon steel knife? Thanks

What grits did you use ? 220, __,__, 800
@TwistedOakHandmade2 жыл бұрын
Hey Apocalypse! Correct! I start with 220 and work right up through the grits to 800 for the satin finish. If the blade will end up being etched for Hamon for Damascus then I will continue up to 2000 -2500 grit depending on how the steel takes the etching.
