I have seen this technique done with a very thin wire but it is much more challenging. I have attempted it myself and became quite frustrated with the wire kinking up and not laying flat. Feel free to give it a try, just please take into account that it is more difficult and you will need to take several passes at it before it looks the way it should.

Love your site =';^) I agree with Angela (below), that the square makes doing flat braid easy (easier?), but I taught myself how to flat braid on the round disk and use it all the time without issue. Either way, thanks for the site and concise instructions.
@beadaholique12 жыл бұрын
There are different patterns for round braids as opposed to flat ones. The pattern shown in this video creates the flat shape. Check out our video titled "How to Make a Simple 8-Warp Kumihimo Braid Bracelet". The tutorial shows it on a round plate. You can make a round braid on the square disc as well, the instructions for that come with the disc on the packaging.

Hello Nigel You can use whatever fibers you want Metal rope etc the fiber just needs enough strength to hold up the TAMA (bobbins) I tried to use some very low twist Mexican Yarn and it fell apart

We just uploaded a video on How to Add Beads to a Flat Kumihimo Braid
@tendjinn2 жыл бұрын
This is the first video on kumihimo that I've watched and it honestly feels very, very overwhelming. I gather from the comments that this isn't the case so my question is what tips do you have for someone who is 100 percent new? This is the weave I need for a specific sewing project so it's definitely a goal to learn to make this specific design but like I said it's very overwhelming for someone as ignorant of the craft as I am. Any tips would be much appreciated!
@beadaholique2 жыл бұрын
Kumihimo can absolutely be overwhelming at first. Truth be told even though we've introduced so many people to it through our videos I think it can be difficult technique to learn that way. There's a lot of motion, the bobbins can be noisy, it's distracting! So I have a couple suggestions. First, find some illustrated instructions and keep them with you as you work, something you don't have to rewind or fast forward. That can help keep you oriented. Second, I'd suggest starting with an easier braid. The 8 warp round weave is what we've had the most success teaching beginner. Once the basics kumihimo technique has clicked for you you'll find learning other weaves comes far easier. You may not even need to finish a whole 8 warp round braid before you're confident enough to tackle the 10 warp flat. Here's a much more recent video from us where we teach an 8 wrap beaded braid. I'd suggest trying something like this, with or without the beads kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKCcdoKLlKlgf5o

@@beadaholique Thank you so much for the advice and the link. Stuff like this is a bit harder for my brain to process. Diving in with a simpler braid may be just what I need. Sometimes it's just easier to do a thing until it clicks.

We still see a lot of demand for kumi braids in general but this flat style has never been as popular. The technique really comes alive best when you add spiraled beads

can you do a video on putting beads on the flat braid kumihimo as well?

I want to make a round Kumihimo beaded necklace that just goes on over your head, I can't figure out how long the cords should be. I hope you have an answer. And BTW, this is pretty, love the earth tones.
@beadaholique8 жыл бұрын
Hi Lorraine, have you seen the video for our June Exclusive kits? They're kumi necklaces and sound basically like what you're looking to make. For those necklaces we used 7 foot long strands and the finished necklace was about 31 inches long. Now we included magnetic clasps in our design for versatility, but they do go over your head quite nicely even without opening the clasp. Check out the video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6rZdGmHmJqeoLc

Would have been helpful if you realized the math involved... I know.. MATHs.. but it does make it easier to explain. So.. bottom - up is always -10... top left to bottom is +11 and top right to bottom is +9. Simple to remember and makes you sound smarter too!
