How To Make a 2 Piece Silicone Mold of a Knife | Mold Making Tutorial

The silicone mold making technique shown in this video can be used for making prop knifes, historical replicas, and more.
We demonstrate using Mold Star 30 silicone, a platinum silicone for mold making. The finished knife replica is cast in TASK 8 liquid plastic resin. TASK 8 is a strong casting resin which can be easily painted.
The final section of this tutorial shows techniques for painting the completed replica.

I cannot but praise how professionally you made the vid. Thanks. I am interested in casting a LEAD piece, instead of one made with a thermoset plastic. Can I use the same technique, perhaps replacing the last polymer with LEAD, instead, or its temperature limit will not be at the melting point of the lead's? Information out there is not specific, and more tends to favour the casting of plaster, polymers and things like that. I appreciate any info about it. Thanks.

I'm doing a job and I have to make spear tips for a play and there is a possibility that they Will hit the tips of the spears or someone might drop them, do you think that this product you used to make the reproduction would be able to withstand that? If not do you have maybe a more sturdy material that wouldn't break so easily? I was looking at products like polyurethane but I'm not sure. Thanks

Making a mold will affect the original. In most cases, using a silicone rubber will produce the least effect. In this example, the original was undamaged.

How do your products stack up to Alumilite? I've cast with their product for years and the only problem I've had is paint does not adhere to the resin well. I paint the inside of the mold before applying the resin and it can be flecked off fairly easy. How well does your product take additives like porcelain, copper, or aluminum powder?

*Dear Smooth-On* There is a type of *TWIN-SYRINGE* that has a single long spout connecting the two of the containers, this spout has an internal zig-zag path inside that I understand is used to mix the components from the two recipients. Wouldn't it be interesting to sell some of these in much larger formats to make mixing the parts A and B easier, faster, and better? This tool could be sold empty, and the user would fill each syringe with the product they wanted, specially when it's 1:1 mix ratio between parts A and B If you cap properly one end, the piston at the other is, by definition air-tight, so it might ensure an appropriate shelf-life What do you guys think? i'd personally set the knife vertically on the clay, this way, the knife's edge is more accurate, when you set the knife horizontally flat laying on its side, details gets lost on the sharp edge of the knife where the 2 silicone molds come together...

No matter what I do, when you put the two mold halves together and pour the resin, the resin always leaks out and makes a mess, leaving half empty molds and a very exspensive puddle..!!!!!! I even use vasaline as a joint sealer to keep the resin in!!!

This mold can withstand 450F. Not high enough for a direct gold pour, but enough for the wax master which is used for the final pour. Some of our customers do use PMC clay in these molds for precious metal casting though.

I just spent the last week learning this - from a rep at Reynolds Advanced Materials - Platinum Cure (Mold Start series, etc.) silicone can be cast over and over and have a very long library life, unless you store them improperly, use too much heat on them, or put the wrong solvent, etc. on them - if you treat the mold right, it will last a very long time. Tin Cure Silicone (Like Mold Max) on the other hand degrades faster and will break down easier - although that too can survive many many casts. The library life is one reason why the significant difference in price between the Mold Start 30 and the Mold Max products (just as an example.) Someone from Smooth On may have an even better explanation - but this is what I learned recently after a bunch of research and a very long conversation with an awesome person at Reynold's in Boston.
