My pieces keep won't stay together like your pieces. They either fall off or are extremely hard to keep together. I'm on the first step trying to make the base. Any help is appreciated :)

You can't use the pieces when they are just folded. You need to shape them first. Watch our tutorial (how to make 3D origami pieces) to see how!
